Ketan Vakil started a company to sell Low-FODMAP foods. He wants to tell the truth on his labels. His customers want that information so they can follow the diet prescribed by their doctors.
But the government said NO!

Why?
Our first Stossel TV Fellow, Trevor Kraus of Learn Liberty, examines why the government bans accurate information on food labels.

@@ItsGroundhogDaythat is a stupid statement. Budget for the government doesn’t come from any single area. That’s not how taxes work, even when they are supposedly specified in law. Also thinking the government obeys any budget at all is naive. Also thinking the governments needs any income for their spending is silly. They just print/create/borrow what they want to use.

True. I have discovered, on the labels of supplements, that there is now a section called "Other Ingredients." Contained in these ingredients are chemicals, artificial sweeteners that will spike your blood sugar as surely as "real" sugar does, etc. Finding supplements that don't have these harmful added ingredients takes some research. Guarding your health takes real work in a society in which the FDA is approving things that will kill you if you let them.

@@dampierstucco5778 I asked a long-time family friend who was a "Shark" Attorney and Noble Judge in his day why more attorneys who are entering the "Twilight" of their careers or have recently retired don't get involved with the Institute of Justice or other similar organizations. The answer was both enlightening and appalling. He told me no matter who the attorney is, whether a defense attorney, prosecuting attorney, or even those attorneys who specialized in contracts, real estate, etc., and never even stepped foot in a courtroom, have at some point in their careers, "Sold Out" not for their client's sake, but for their own personal sake whether it be for money, power, validation, attention, etc. Then this man, our family friend who was one of the most respected attorneys and Judge to be a member of the Bar Association during the last 50 years, told me EXACTLY when HE SOLD OUT. Because of "Selling Out", there are those who have certain "information" about them and will literally destroy their legacies if they should end up giving their time or money to organizations such as Institute for Justice. Who are these powerful individuals that would destroy a man or woman's legacy for simply helping those battle the Govt. and the American Goliaths"??? They are from families with names that have been well known and established for decades and even centuries in America, they are the Bar Association, they are lobbyists for attorneys, and most importantly, they are Politicians who "game" the Govt to obtain and solidify their power and wealth for generations of their families to come. If destroying someone's legacy won't work, then they will simply end that person or even worse, innocent members of their families. There is a reason Attorneys are the most powerful group of men and women in America, THEY HOLD ALL THE CARDS. Most politicians are former and even current Attorneys and Judges. These are the people that make the laws for the American people but those laws MUST benefit themselves or they are discarded no matter how sound or reasonable they appear to be. If America wants change, REAL CHANGE, they need to hamstring the Attorneys. But we can't until the day of the next Revolution arrives which if it takes too long to come, will be too late to have a chance to make serious changes.

Bluntly, the fda arrives to a position of cockblocking facts or science for one reason: feed the lobbyist class - the guys that take congressmen out for their free lunches. For the executive branch the game is a little different: a president gets some things he wants by hinting at who lobbyists should contact, to generate "consensus" and feed the hordes of corruption. Agencies generally move to change two ways: compliance with a recently passed bill, or too many senators asking real questions - congress has their budget. Those dollars brings more "prestige" to these tards than any person the people choose as president, long run - bureaucrats outlast all administrations.

He is truly one of the best, but he is not unbiased. That is not a criticism, just a recognition of fact. Everyone is biased and it is good to recognize that fact. Just because you are biased does not mean you cannot tell the truth. Stossel backs up all his claims with evidence. His bias helps him select which evidence to include or exclude from his videos. I tend to agree with his choices, but people with a different bias would tell each story differently. Everyone hopes that their bias is towards truth, but people also have a bias towards never being wrong and being perceived as "nice". Those often conflict with the truth, but many academics tie themselves in knots and even invent new language to justify their original positions or the politically correct position of the day.

Food “labeling” is a horrible scam. I run a small pastured-poultry operation and we are able to operate under exemption because we sell less than 9,000 birds annually. But the labeling and regulations are so crushing - I’m constantly trying to avoid “breaking the law” while trying to get as much information to my customers to help differentiate our products. This FDA system is not helpful to consumers or producers. Did you know the term “fresh” just means “raw, not frozen long term?” It doesn’t mean “recently produced.” We just found this out trying to get info to customers about thanksgiving turkeys. Butterball’s turkeys are processed between mid October and early November and can be kept as cold as 25° (aka frozen) and still sold as “fresh turkey.” This is absolutely not what consumers think “fresh” means.

My relative was quite sick, and I spent hours upon hours creating and updating charts of high and low FODMAP foods and ingredients. Visits to the grocery store were tedious as I read each label and compared it to my homemade charts. It was exhausting, but it paid off. We eventually got the health situation under control. I hope you are successful with your lawsuit and are able to help people with your products. Taking care of sick people is difficult enough. A simple, adjustment to a list doesn't seem too much to ask from the FDA, especially since all the scientific research has been done for them.

I'm fine with some regulations in certain circumstances such as when it comes to certain goods like fresh meat and vegetables in grocery stores because the consumer has no way of knowing where or what farm it came from. The thing that needs to be gutted is the Commerce Clause. That's what they've used to expand their reach far beyond it's original intent.
@debanydoombringer1385
@debanydoombringer1385 5 ай бұрын
@@stevenscott2136 Because you could go to the farm growing your food. You were purchasing directly from the person that grew or made it. Large grocery stores is what caused a lot of these agencies to be created. It was to set a standard that the consumer could trust because that link between producer and customer was severed. I'm old enough to remember, and I'm not THAT old, when grocery stores were local and all the fresh food was grown close by. You couldn't buy fruits and vegetables out of season either. Now we import from Mexico and Canada out of season and your meat can be grown in those countries too. It was supposed to just set a standard so that no matter where it came from the consumer could trust it was of the same standard as they'd had from their local growers.

Keep in mind that the FDA is partly funded by big pharma itself. A very big chunk of their annual budget ($8.4 billion in 2023) comes from fees paid by drug and medical device manufacturing companies seeking FDA approval before being allowed to market their product to the American public. This is expected to amount to $3 billion in 2023. Congress approved this funding method in an act in 1992 in order to accelerate the drug evaluation and approval process. Previously that was taking around 2.5 years. Now thanks to more staffing the approval process averages around 10 months. So in this sense it has been a success. However, it also raises very real concerns that, in effect, a large portion of FDA staffer salaries are paid by the very companies the FDA is supposed to regulate with the goal of protecting the American public. Is there an indirect impact on the food safety side of the FDA's responsibilities? Are more resources allocated to money-making drug and medical device approvals, detracting from the attention given to food safety?

It is completely undefendable once you loook at it, but was established to keep fad diet companies from making a term like "heart healthy" without "showing that this label is in the public interest"... normally by paying for studies done by companies on the FDAs good side.

I've been on the FODMAP diet due to intense digestive pain. Of course our government makes it harder for something that benefits its citizen's!! There is a FODMAP company in Australia that offers the ingredients and FODMAP info on their products but finding the items in a store can be difficult at times. Schar sells gluten free items and used to be in grocery stores and health food stores - they've all been pulled off the shelves and we now need to order it online.
