I get the suspicion that the presenter does not like the Site C project. As a BC resident, I am as environmentally aware as anyone. but 11 sq miles to be flooded for 100+ years of clean power, considering how big the province is not much. Especially since this project will eliminate the purchase of electricity for decades from Alberta that is generated by burning coal. As for using ALR land there is many times the ALR land in the Lower Mainland that seems to be growing little but low value animal feed. This location was selected as being the least environmentally harmful.

Fort Saint John would be lucky to get a 4 month growing season. Using images of grapes being grown in the area is laughable and, more importantly, impossible with the minimal heat and duration of its growing season.

I worked on the first dam, now called the WAC Bennett dam. Here are a few memories: a pair of beavers built a dam above the contractors access road to the Powerhouse. This dammed up a stream. When the snow melted fully, it overflowed and washed out the access road. Yes, several times. beavers were relocated, but there were a lot of beavers at that time. I worked for BC Hydro and kept the death on the job files. Some were death by stupidity, ie, walking across the walkway on top of the penstocks (The towers that were the water intake to the turbines below in the powerhouse) without clipping a safety belt to the railing. As I recall, this had to be clipped and unclipped as the journey proceeded over the penstocks, which were not close together. Several workers failed to clip up again, and consequently fell into the penstocks. Trees that were “drowned” eventually rotted or released from their underwater grace and shot up into the air, often in front of the boom boats and other water craft that were on the lake that was rising behind the dam. The boom boats were removing trees and debris and forming log booms. One day I was photographing some of the ongoing work at the foot of the dam, near the diversion tunnels that were rerouting the water around the dam as it was being constructed. Something big came rolling out of one of the tunnels, and it turned out to be a very large and confused bear. It staggered to its feet, , shook itself free of the water in its fur and lurched off down the river. And one last memory - we used to put an old car out on the ice and then bet on when it would sink as the ice melted. Don’t think any equipment was sunk and left behind, but a mountain was partly demolished to create the fill for the dam!

I remember my dad talking about WAC Bennett and that wacky dam. I'm not sure what his issue was about it, but as a young child in the late 70's and into the 80's, I would watch him get so animated and I'd hear him getting wound up as he discussed amongst his friends, it's construction. Like most huge projects, there's always bound to be some bodies claimed. Did u work on the Coquihalla, back in the mid 80s?

@ no Coquihalla for me! 8 years on what we called the Peace Dam Project was enough for me. No TV, only CBC radio, papers were always several days late, Spring came in June, grocery shopping was limited as was everything else. WAC Bennet was not popular because his government had expropriated the BC Electric company, renaming it BC Hydro and spend lots of money on the dam eventually named after him!

The farming in the area is minimal at best. It needs to be known that the area would be lucky to have 5 months from the spring thaw to the first snow snow fall in the fall. Hardly any hardy crops growing in the area, and definately no grapes or fruit of anykind being grown in the area.

WWN of Pemberton, BC, lives Meagre Mountain Group, a dormant volcano surrounded by hot springs. Two private companies have invested in Geothermal energy feasibility studies on behalf of investor groups, but both times failed to find a borehole that met the criteria, two of which are temperatures high enough while also having the water replacement rate from all natural sources year round. At least that is what one of the main geologists/investor explained to me. I'm sure if money wasn't a limiting factor, a suitable spot would eventually be found. Perhaps turning a volcano into Swiss cheese is also a factor?

In the city where I live (lower west coast of B.C.), it has been assessed that should the hydro dam that has been built across the local river, break, the city will find itself at least 17 feet under water, within minutes... THAT is a terrifying thought, yet it is the risk we choose to accept, to be able to live in such a beautiful and amazing place.

BC just approved 9 nine new wind farms as the fastest and least cost option for new electricity. 4 in the south, 4 in the north and 1 on the island.

We're damned if we do, damned if we don't. Hydro is one of the cleanest forms of electricity production. Period. That part of BC gets cold & snowy and can stay that way for a long time. BC Hydro had to do all sorts of assessments for this project. They likely did an equivalent to our EIS process. There are going to be give and takes. Regarding the bears, you showed the 2 types of bear that are in that area, black & grizzly bear. The two are distinctively different in how they live. I believe that grizzlies will dig out a den for the winter, but it might be black bears. I can't remember. The one that I believe would be a factor is aquatic species, specifically fish. Hopefully they will be able to mitigate these factors. The base fact is that our western society is electricity ravenous. With sequestration of Carbon, which is a key factor for global warming. So people, pick your poison. Choose coal fired electricity plant or a Hydro project.
