Freshwater mussels are vastly underappreciated organisms that clean the Earth's waterways to provide valuable ecosystem services. They are already highly endangered and are growing more vulnerable in the face of climate change. Rachel Mair, Amy Manyard, and others at the Harrison Lake Fish Hatchery work hard to help keep the diversity of these natural water filters by propagation, research, and stewardship. Have a look at how the Hatchery supports these incredibly unique ecosystem caretakers, and see for yourself just how remarkable mussels are!

If they bred and sold native freshwater mussels and clams for people who keep ponds (within their native range), I’m sure the pond industry would support such a good cause. It may even raise awareness so people learn how important these guys are in their native habitat and their ponds.

That’s a very smart idea. For example, I’m sure those YTers who create ponds and add fishes would also purchase mussels.

It's pretty cool how they clean the water, but it's a relatively slow process. Nothing too drastic, but noticeable. I was actually stunned to see how they attract fish for their reproduction. That was absolutely shocking to me. I'm actually really happy to see that people are interested in ecology all around the world. It's really cool. That background music was awesome too.

The fact zebra mussels arnt hunted down by people to bolth help get rid of them and use there shells. Like there shells can be used to feed corls or help make concrete it can be pressed into rock for corls to grow on in tanks or in the ocean.

I own ponds in WV I have 4 ponds 1 is filled with mussels 1 has recently started showing signs and 2 I haven't seen many. The one that has a established population is much clearer with less evasive grasses than the others.

I'm totally all about them in baskets below weird and overflow structures and stuff like that all down canals and spillways. And. I'm sure as a slow moving remediation system would help degunk lake bottoms , boil up the bottom with air bubbles in a venturing up and back to other contained feeder animals.. 1mesh etc like a reverse gold classifier not sure how tight they can be packed and such though. Baskets around pond airations intakes etc.

The small six acre lake I live on has green water most of the time. Can I gather clams or mussels from a river nearby and move them into the lake or do they need to be in rivers?
