David is SO good it is almost ridiculous. His right hand is absolutely incredible. He is so fluid and rhythmic. He has occupied the Solo Guitar territory with no sign of ever letting it go. He's going to go down in the history books as one of the true great acoustic guitarists, setting the bar so high for younger generations to come.

I had to laugh out loud a few times during the songs because David played something so absurdly wonderful that us mortals would never even imagine :) Always a treat to see and hear him play, and always an inspiration to get after some new ideas on the guitar.

Excellent interview! David has such a warm, laid back, down home personality. He can play his brains out but yet remains humble. That is a true musician! Black Mountain Rag was the best I ever heard! Great job Jason and Fretboard Journal...more please?!

Wow I remember the first time I seen David Grier in the eighties he was playing in the hallway at a Hotel in St Louis MO. He was playing his guitar just jamming away I couldn’t believe my eyes or ears. Then came along Bull Harmon and he says hey David what’s up then starts jamming with him. What a treat I will never forget it.

One of my favourite guitar players. The songs he plays here are all excellent imo. One though in particular is astonishing; watch his right hand during Black Mountain Rag. Begins at the 59:01 mark. Got a chance to meet him in London a month or so back, before his gig with Helen Highwater. Nice Guy and great show.

Playing at Steve Martin's Wedding & Martin Mull (Fernwood Tonight) asking David to play such a fantastic piece! That just blows both sides of my brain! Some Night that must have been! Do the "Wedding Planner People" know about this? And to Top it Off, Black Mt. Rag in I don't know how many keys changes. That's what to do with your 20 mins Before Work Brother. Take a song you know, but don't play and play it in 5 or 6 different keys. Sierra does the same with Wildwood Flower and you see Her using some of the same Left-Hand figures as David. Amazing!

I'm watching this for the 2nd or 3rd time and at night I'm practicing with a metronome and trying all the variations David went through on his cross picking journey. The key, as David points out, is being careful not to emphasize any one string so that when it comes time you can emphasize the ones you choose to emphasize. Being gentle on every string is what I think gives David that silky smooth sound that melts in your ears, yeah, like butter.

I think the reason he is comfortable with a higher action is he has really thick finger for a guitar player.a light touch is most likely not his style.
