Yeah. Im left confused and wishing i had the fret board memorized. The whole idea of walking into chords makes it sound so complex i love it. Ive been playing guitar for years and im new to the mando. Its a trip how different it is. love the videos and trying to play along. i have never tried this hard to learn an instrument. thanks for the help.

Hi Stevie, Memorizing the whole fretboard is not as important as getting the shapes of the chords and scales under your fingers and into your muscle memory. The dexterity you've built with guitar will make the road to mandolin much smoother! You're just in the steep part of the learning curve right now so keep plugging away. :-) What I'm finding is the very most important thing you can do is to play some every day. I average about 25 min on guitar and the same on mandolin. I've been logging all of my time on a spreadsheet I've made, and it's really helpful for me to be able to see the boxes turn green (on the spreadsheet) every time I practice. Even when I feel like I've hit a plateau, or am even regressing a bit, I can still see the green boxes add up. :-) www.fretboard-toolbox.com/3-big-ways-to-improve.html Hope something here helps you a bit on your journey! :-) Happy playing, Scott

@FretboardToolbox when you are playing a major key, are you using just one finger? Like C major just the 5th fret C on fourth string? Thanks!

+Madeleine Gross Hi Madeline, Thanks for the question! When you're playing a C Major, you need some combination of the notes C, E, and G. If you're just playing one of the notes, it's not considered a chord. I was probably playing the C Major shape where you're on the 4th string, 5th fret "C", the 3rd string, 2nd fret "E", and the 2nd string, 3rd fret "C". Sometimes its just hard to show all my fingers. :-) Hope that helps, if not let me know what time in the video you're talking about, and I'll see if I can figure out what I was doing. :-) Happy playing! ~Scott

Ah that makes sense! But when you are 'walking' down to a different chord, like from C to G, you are fretting one note at a time (like D and E) and strumming just the 2 strings of each note? Thanks so much!

Exactly! And a great place to start with the "walking" is by using the notes in white boxes (the Major scale notes). I hope you let me know how it goes for you after you give it some practice!

Awesome, thanks so much for your help Scott. And I will do!
