I wish I had professors half as good as you. I’m 30 now, graduated and indulging in all of these lectures during covid. Thank you for sharing with us.

Every trauma is an unsolved puzzle inside the subconsciousness. The brain just has to bring it back to consciousness again and again, until it is resolved as a closure.

Maybe, the remembering of the trauma or the dream of it, is to fulfill the wish of making the trauma tolerable, and making the individual who endured such trauma much stronger. Afterall the individual might think of things that are painful, and he or she may wish to be able to bear them ( by tolerating them or being stronger) so that that trauma becomes normal (like if you're informed that a polar bear is dead, a natural death).

The dream about a fellow soldiers head getting blown of in the trench may express a wish that it would happen to someone else than himself (and feeling of guilt about it)

Dreams offer more questions/mysteries than life itself

The last question asked. I would say is it not possible the suffering IS his wish. It's basic survivors guilt and the survivor is punishing themselves.
