Written by Clarence Tilton frontman Chris Weber, the song was inspired by a whirlwind work trip from Omaha to California, where gale-force winds, overturned semis, and flood-stage rivers formed the backdrop for a journey of difficult scenarios. But amid the tension, Weber found himself captivated by the landscapes around him, from the Friant Dam on the San Joaquin River to the winding path of Historic Route 66.
“Friant is a peaceful song about a frantic week,” Weber explains. “It’s about finding those fleeting moments of beauty in the middle of the madness. It’s a song that feels like home, even if it’s a home you’ve never seen.”
“Friant” features Chris Weber and guitarist Paul Novak singing dual harmonies throughout nearly the entire track. With its leading steel guitar, performed live in a single take by Corey Weber, and a melody that’s as soothing as it is compelling, the song evokes the reflective calm of a long drive through open landscapes. The chorus, “Feels like home, but one you’ve never seen,” stays with you, evoking the joy of shared experiences on the road.
While deeply rooted in Americana, “Friant” incorporates indie influences, showcasing Clarence Tilton’s ability to transcend genre boundaries. Recorded at ARC Studios in Omaha, engineered by Adam Roberts, and mastered by Doug van Sloun, the track’s warmth and authenticity shine through its live recording process, with steel guitar, acoustic rhythm, and a fade-out enhancing its emotional pull.
Building on the momentum of “Fred’s Colt (feat. Marty Stuart)” and “Flyway Cafe (feat. Presley Tucker)", "Friant " brings a lighter, more contemplative tone to the band’s evolving discography, which features two prior full-lengths and one EP. The song highlights Clarence Tilton’s knack for storytelling and crafting music that grabs the listener, and doesn’t let go.
