Severtitude was common not the chattalization of an entire race for commodity. Your ancestors came to Trinidad in late 1800's after chattel slavery with Language and culture in tact. Very different for Africans. Yes, your ancestors faced oppression and marginalization but nowhere in comparison to Africans who were already 200 yrs in Trinidad under oppression before your folks showed up. Culture is an important factor to any group of people's success. Average African in Trinidad don't even have his or her original name or aspects of thier culture outside of a European. The mare fact you still have your south Asian family name means you connected to that root culture that informs your success. Have a good day
