I kinda love how raw this ending is. Boyfriend lost, but NOT because he couldn't hold up the terms of their duel. M was always going to flake on him and kill them anyway, and BF, even for as stupid as he is, probably realized M was going to do it after Starman Slaughter. BF leaving as a precaution wasn't the reason to go all-out, it was the excuse. The shear unbreakable nature of BF here and just how unruly the souls making up his mass were shows that in the terms of their wager, as it was formed by M himself, Boyfriend would've won. M was too much of a sore loser to accept that given he kept asking why he was still going after GF was already dead, as if he knew he was going to lose the game he himself set up, and so he resorts to an anticlimactic cheap shot out of petty spite. And as a result, his victory feels no less hollow, no less empty, and brings him no closer to finding any sense of joy in what he does anymore. One could even say that he cheated not only the game, but himself. Meanwhile, yeah, the two died... but they died refusing to give up on eachother. Girlfriend stood by her man to the end even without her powers, and Boyfriend refused to take a chance to leave if he couldn't leave with her and was willing to die to make the point that for all M's power, he'll never know what it means to have people who want to be with him. And if that credits song and the friendlier opponents also being M was any indication, that motion cut deep to his fucking core.

And M realizes this in the end, during the credits he sings a melancholic song, reminiscing on how much fun he was having in the beginning of there rap battles while thinking how much more satisfying the kill could have been. He had completed his kill but there was no thrill behind it whatsoever

For anyone confused, the mario here is "ultra M", a version of mario from mario odyssey, who takes the souls of other beings to become stronger, hence why all of the other mario icons can be seen in act 4 next to his if you look closely, as he has most likely absorbed their souls. Probably why he also says "We are one soul stronger", refering to him taking Gfs soul and also explains the white glowing eyes in act 3 in the background, them being the victims he has taken the souls' of. Pretty cool concept! Edit: The characters you played against previously are all victims of ultra m as well, which shows they're most likely closer to puppets that ultra m controlled the whole time. Also, could anyone make a transcript of the lyrics at 7:53 in the background?

I think the way it works that you can only see a minority of the icons in act 4, most of them being from hellish heights. The ones that didn't have cameos are: Grand Dad, Somari, Chris Pratt, Super Bad Mario, L is Real, LDO Mario, and Racist Mario. I think this is because Boyfriend didn't see these opponents as LIFE-THREATENING in a way, and felt friendly towards most, especially towards L is Real, as he was trying to reach towards him in Thalassphobia. The ones that did make a cameo tho were either life-threatening in a way, or Boyfriend was a dick to most of them, Beta Luigi and IHY Luigi to be in fact, or that most of the opponents were dicks to Boyfriend in the first Boyfriend, Ninrendo Representative and DJ Hallyboo. The most important part is that neither of these cameos die(IHY counts cuz he's a undead husk) unlike Racist Mario who was life-threatening to BF but died when the song ended. So Ultra M still has reach and control over BF's opponents as they never died in the first place, just given up.

No mod makes me sad with its ending as much as Mario's Madness does. BF's death really shows that he and GF were doomed the very second they booted up the corrupted cartridge. If only they threw it out or something, they've would've actually lived to see tomorrow. But what's genius behind the mod is the fact that it boosts your expectations of BF and GF making it out alive. The two do very good throughout a majority of the adventure, and they even go through some joke songs to lighten the mood. When you think GF got killed by MX, it turns out that she's just fine! When BF and GF are blown up by Dictator Mario, they're just fine! When Pico encounters Mr. L, he makes it out just fine! It's red herrings like these that make you take the outcome of the adventure for granted. That's what makes it all the more bitter to see BF lose to Mario, it's heartbreaking, even. But the mod is even better in that way. Sure, I hate bad endings and this one stings to see. But at the same time, it feels good in a particular way. Either that, or I'm a psychopath

It also just... doesnt make any sense? I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but when bf dies, he only had one life. But... before that, in the overworld, it says he has 4. And it doesnt go down, ever. Never says how many gf has. I assume it's just to keep the mario aesthetic going, but still. I'm not a fan of the fact that bf still dies anyway. I mean, he couldve killed him throughout that entire song, but waits until the very end? Not to mention the fact that what happens to pico is never explained, all we know is that hes still alive. But if so, why wasnt he there at the end? And we get snippets of information, like how M actually knew DD a long time ago, and he got backstabbed. But since this is the last update of the mod, we wont get to see if those two come looking for their daughter. And then, to finish it all off, the end credits song has M feeling regret for what I did. Now that hes all alone, is this what he wanted? Not to mention that there are pictures of him helping bf and gf, so we dont even know if he brings them back or not. The whole thing feels like it's trying to be deep, but is curbstimped because of the rest of the game we just played. Not to mention the questions that will remain unanswered. It isnt good closure at all. Even endings where the main characters lose, there arent any loose ends. The only burning question in everyone's mind is "what's next?!" Mine was, "that's it? 2 hours of fighting, just to die? And the dying isnt even consistent?!" Dont get me wrong, the mod is great. But the ending really missed the mark, for me.

I really like the concept of Ultra M, he pretty much uses Cappy to take souls to get stronger, everyone you fought before are Ultra M’s victims. Way cooler than Xenophanes. However, I don’t really think he could beat some characters like MX, Mr Virtual and even Mr L. MX is the same type of entity as Lord X so he’s op. Mr Virtual is pretty much a computer destroyer. Mr L is on something so he’s OP.

This mod is absolutely amazing. The songs, the story, the emotional impact, everything. By far my favorite moment has to be the end to this song where it can be inferred that BF knows that he’s a goner, he’s watched his girlfriend die in front of his eyes and he’s fact to face with an entity of unfathomable power, but instead of surrendering, he chooses to make one final stand against Ultra M, like a true warrior. This moment cements this mod as the greatest mod in FNF for me.

I’ve seen people comment about their gripes with the fact BF dies, and the fact he suddenly has only one life when he dies, when in the life counter in the Overworld, it says 4. I don’t know what the mod developers say is canon or anything like that, but here is my idea/headcanon on why BF suddenly only has 1 life when he dies; All-Stars is a song that consists of 4 acts. And BF consistently has 4 lives throughout the entire mod leading up to that point. The way I see it is; every time the song switches to a new act, BF looses a life in the process. He starts the song with 4 lives. When it switches to act2, he looses one, bringing him down to 3. Switches to act3, he looses another leaving him at 2. It switches to the final act, he looses one more life, leaving him at only 1 life. Then M kills him with that cheap stab, bringing his life counter down to zero as the song ends, fully killing him. Again, idk the canon (and frankly I don’t care), but that’s how I view it lol

if you pay close attention to the health bar during act four, you may notice the nintendo guy from unbeatable. i like to imagine that because he's part of nintendo, and you cannot beat nintendo, that this random guy is the soul that gives ultra m a majority of their power. (edit) i read the entire wiki for the mod earlier, because i was bored. mr. sys (or as i called him in this comment, "the nintendo guy") is actually just business partners with ultra m, but i think mr. sys being one half of ultra m's strength and the entire rest of the cast being the other half is still funnier.

i like this ending here. i'm gonna base this off of the sonic.exe mod, cause whenever xenophanes attacked bf, he always had a forcefield protecting him, and he was always with gf. the fact that bf was furious with ultra m probably blindsighted that, which explains why the spike at the end goes straight for his heart, while in the middle of a note. he couldn't react, at all. in the sonic.exe mod, he does physically react when using his shield, so i think this somewhat makes sense. i also like some peoples idea of him not wanting to continue due to gf being unsavable, which might just like, end that timeline or smth, that hasn't happened before. but the stageplay stuff is just kinda cope. the ending is shocking too, which is probably the point. you don't really expect it on a first time.

In my own way of looking at things, the reason BF died instead of living like every mod ever made is because he chose NOT to reset. What's the point? His GF is dead and no matter how many times he will restart, it won't change. In Ultra M's words, "You've lost the game, it's all the same." Boyfriend may be immortal, but his is a chosen decision to live again. In the end, why would he choose to fight against a god and even if he does beat Ultra M, Boyfriend has no GF to call his own.

In the end, bad endings, just sting a bit. It doesn't mean the ending isn't good(as in quality wise), it just means that it sucks that BF didn't escape. Though it's apparently confirmed that it was all a stageplay. Kind of sounds like back peddling, but hey, it's a good ending now so yay.

​@dullishplays6829 I'm not expecting sunshine rainbows. I think it would have been way more powerful for BF to pull through because he knew GF wouldn't want him to be taken to. GF would still be gone, but BF would narrowly escape. Even the song is like why does BF still fight like it's gonna mean something in the end. It makes no sense to build up an underdog story just to kill the underdog in the end. It's huge epic battle that just ends with "Well sucks to suck because it all meant nothing and BF still dies anyways." Might as well just have died on the first song and the result would have basically been the same. Why play 2 hours of game just for the ending to be "to bad you died anyways." Also I'm getting mixed signals with the stageplay thing. Some people say it is canon, some say it isn't, and others say it's up to interpretation. The creator himself has stated conflicting statements. So I'm just annoyed and confused. TLDR: From a story writing sense this game flubbed real hard, and I can't find a solid statement of whether or not the stageplay idea is canon that isn't contradicted somewhere else.
