Giulietta Masina was the Italian film actress and wife of director genius Federico Fellini. Her always airy looks were matched by an unmistakable acting style. She was petite and fragile and could portray the human soul in a way that no one else could, especially as Gelsomina in Highway and as the streetwalker in Nights of Cabiria. These two roles made her immortal in the history of cinema. It has often been said of her: she is the female Chaplin.
Giulietta's art was described by her husband, Fellini, in his book, My Masterpiece, Film:
"I regard her as an actor blessed by God with a unique talent: she can express with extraordinary directness the wonder, the horror, the exuberant joy and the comic sadness of a clown. Giulietta is a clown actor, a real female clown. For me, this is high praise, but many actors are annoyed by it, suspecting it of being patronising, not dignified enough, or rather rude. They're wrong: I think clowning is the greatest gift, the most aristocratic gift in the acting profession."
She arrived in 1993 in excellent form in front of the cameras of the Friderikusz Show, and even danced during the filming, of course only for the sake of Sándor Friderikusz.
Giulietta Masina died a few months after her Budapest appearance, in March 1994, at the age of 73, five months after Fellini. They are buried in a common grave in the cemetery of Fellini's hometown, Rimini. Like at Fellini's funeral, Masina's final farewell was trumpeted by Mauro Maur, playing Nino Rota's bittersweet theme from The Road.
