I came on here with this one in mind today. I was thinking of her solitude and confinement, but the breakdown of how she contrasts with the strict geometry of her space (around 2:40) also resonated with me. I (unwillingly) receive Friedrich's poetic invitation daily. The first surprise was how the artist's name is pronounced. I thought "rick" rather than "rish." The second was the poplars - I didn't notice them until the detailed view was shown. The painting at 1:46 is lovely, too There's still that sense of yearning for more, but it feels more open and free at the same time.

@@smarthistory-art-history Just like the video I watched today, you guys helped create that for me in your description of it. It's amazing how much can be taken away from a piece when you're willing to see it differently.

I've been to a lot of art museums in Europe, and would have loved to have seen this painting in person. The next best thing, for sure, is to see it here and to have the benefit of your commentary. Thanks for brining the world of paintings into our homes with excellent insights and perspectives.

The 'inner light' is largely the ochre-ish underpainting being allowed to show through, with great control and feeling, particularly in the application of the blues and the touches on the dress.

200 years later, still pondering the plight of women ... a bit depressing but not surprising

As is usually seen from Friedrich, this picture reveals a dimension of eternal and of ephemeral, which constitute life.

Thanks to the artist's careful depiction you can see swivels that hold the four fixed panes and their frame in place suggesting that either the entire set of upper panes could be removed, or if hinged at the top edge, could swing open for easier cleaning. What is clear is that it is not a sash.

I am writing an essay (final year photography course at university) about absorption within paintings and contemporary photographs and would like to cite this video. Who is talking in this video so I can get their names?

Our names appear and the start of the video and at the end.
