I found your channel by chance ☺️. I'm watching from Scotland. Thank you for explaining about the history of the place. Most channels don't do that. It was really interesting, and what a beautiful place.

Nice. I am from Gary and attended the schools you showed in the background. Only thing, scrip ended in the 1950s for the US Steel miners.

i love how government cares for Afghanistan or Iraq and waste money for other country rather than support small state or county like this. i live in the philippines but you should care for your own people first rather than other people

I swam in that pool & attended both of those schools, as a young girl. I am grateful, this was no 'hood' for me. I recall this being 'Almost Heaven' growing up here. Thanks for the video.

Fun fact, West Virginia once led the U.S. in coal production. And McDowell County led coal production in West Virginia.

I grew up in #6 hollow where if course the #6 mine used to operate.. I went to the segregated " colored" school where you're standing, the one with the white door.. One side was the elementary school and the other side was the high school.. My family left the area in 1960 because of the mine closings.. I didn't return until the early 2000's and by then there was very little left.. Visited Six hollow which at one time was home to a lot of black families.. Whiskey Hill, Murphy Hill were all black families as was most of "the bottom".. It was all gone, not a trace of the large number of black families that at one time lived there.. So depressing to see it all gone.

I want to a video about some of the current issues in McDowell. There’s a problem with the tap water in Gary, thinks the same issue as in Flint with the pipes, very sad stuff

Hopefully things turn for the better in Gary WV and IN. Never put all the eggs in one basket . Stay lose and versatile with work skills and what's needed in the existing community .

Good video and thank you! My people are coal miners from Scotland - dangerous work but we need coal for steel production. It is honest work.

I think it's sad especially when you know how hard people worked and how many families over the years were affected. I love West Virginia always have, thanks for sharing. Just found your channel.

Thanks for a truthful commentary. My brothers and sisters went to Gary High School (Go,Coaldiggers). It is sad to see what happened when coal declined but things change and people go where opportunities are.

Im from Gary, In. I had no idea this town existed. Two Gary’s that unfortunately had most their eggs in one basket. Gary, In. has also had a hard row to hoe since the 70’s. Thanks for this info!

Sadly, the majority of West Virginia is a hood in the woods. It is too bad because it is a beautiful, scenic state with spectacular forested mountains and deep valleys. But West Virginia is still a very poor state that remains largely dependent on environmentally destructive extraction industry.

if you don't have it already, get the book "Billion Dollar Coalfield", a thick book with lots of photos and info sorted by geographical location. What is now "Gary" encompasses what used to be a number of different locations/towns.

Now that the company has moved away who owns the houses the people have been living in? Also, when you are paid in script, how do you save money for your old age?

Thanks for the video! I have such fond memories of WV. I was born in Welch and my dad worked for US Steel for 50 years, from age 16 to 66! I attended the elementary school in Gary. Ms Smith was my 1st and 2nd grade teacher and Ms. Moon was my teacher in 3rd grade. I have a 2-hour long video of Gary that I personally recorded in the winter of 1987.
