Friendly Jordies is the exact reason why I've taken considerable effort to be informed on politics. Not only have I donated to charity, joined a union, switched banks, and switched super because of his massively evidence-based advice and clear rationale, but just to show how much I've changed purely due to his channel: I've spent the past week researching the economic reforms of the 80s and 90s with Bob Hawke and Paul Keating. A lot of the jargon has gone over my head, I'm no expert in economics, far from it, and at the end of the day, I'm not too sure if what was done was good or bad (guess I need to keep reading). But to have gone from a donkey voter bogan interested only in sport science, classic aussie rock, and footy - Jordan has had a profound influence both on my character, and on my intelligence, for the better.

Friendly Jordies is the one of the only people that gives me hope for the sorry state of the media in Australia and the world. And you're bang on about his comedy. One thing that I love is that he'll use ad hominem (like "fatty mcfuckhead" and more recently "koala killer" and "super barilaro bruz") as bait to reel his opponents attention, only to then barrage them with all the expensive, dodgy, corrrupt things they have done behind people's backs. Best part is %99 of the time, when all the facts are laid out on the table, he's right. Keep up your amazing work MinA!

99%?? When is he actually wrong?? The only valid criticism I've ever heard of Jordan is some people not enjoying his comedic style, which is actually fair enough, comedy is subjective (Jordan has admitted this several times himself). That being said, sometimes even that criticism isn't valid, as seen in his videos on Giovanni Bruzilaro, Nicole Flint, and that one "homophobe" who gave some pathetic feedback on his John Howard Really Sucked stand-up gig I'm open to why he's wrong, and when he's been wrong, but so far, he's only shown to be correct 100% of the time
@brookcie14 жыл бұрын
He doesn't use ad hominem. To use the fallacy ad hominem, you'd need to say "My opponent is wrong BECAUSE he's a fatty mcfuck head" - but Jordies says "My opponent is wrong because of this corruption, inconsistent with reality... oh by the way he's also fat lol" He never uses personal attacks as his point.

The Adventures of Zoom and Bettie well the brutal truth is, in a democracy your average person has very little say over what happens. Then again imagine how people who don’t have a democratic government feel. Just because you’re not an oligarch doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have an interest in how your country is run. It’s a pretty poor excuse, well I don’t have much say over what happens so I’m not going to engage in it. Democracy works better the more people who are informed and engaged, and the more people who decide because they don’t wield significant power that politics is broken and boring and useless, the worse things get. It goes hand in hand with the mentality that politics doesn’t affect “me”. Of course as soon as it affects a person directly, they usually have very strong opinions about the matter and are furious that nothing is being done. Services need funding, laws need changing and most of these services and laws never affect a person, but as soon as they need elective surgery or something it’s unacceptable. It’s obviously the natural order of things that people are most motivated by their own interests. That doesn’t excuse ignorance and self-absorption.

I'm 50 and I'm a fan of Friendlyjordies. I have become so frustrated and disillusioned with Australia's mainstream media (with a tiny few noble exceptions), the bulk of it appears to have become either too compromised by commercial interests or too timid to challenge the status-quo. The corporate and much of the political establishment either control or intimidate much of the media (and a lot of journalists, fearful of losing their jobs in a shrinking industry, are only too happy to go along with such a culture). Another, bigger part of the problem is the culture of this nation as a whole. We like to imagine ourselves as fiercely independent larrikans with a 'no-bullshit' attitude. But the sad reality is that the bulk of us have become a sleepy, complacent 'three wise monkeys' culture, easily fooled and self-deluded. It says a lot that a lone comedian who has dared to question the status quo has struck such a chord with young people (and me!)

@joe bloggs I didn't say that Jordies (or John Oliver for that matter) don't provide any value in calling attention to important issues, I am a subscriber after all, nor that the Labor Party isn't the significant lesser of two evils in Australia. But as someone who was born into the Party and gave them the best years of my life (plus a not insignificant amount of money) in the genuine belief that they cared about the best interests of the worker I have come to realise that they no longer uphold the principles that drew me to them in the first place. The Right (read significant majority) of the party are proud Neoliberals, who are often openly mocking of the base at Party meetings and functions and barely bother to pay lip service to the founding tenets of the Australian Labor Movement publicly, let alone further them. The Left are entirely ineffectual within the party apparatus, delusional about their broader influence and, in the few opportunities they actually get to enact their program, would rather defer in the hopes of greater victories that never come. These days they seem content with the fuzzy feeling they get calling eachother comrade at every opportunity. I neither like nor care about the Greens so not sure why you bring them up. I can only hope that the global depression we now find ourselves knee-deep in can activate the grassroots of the party and encourage a return to true Labor values but I'm not holding my breath. Sorry for the rant, but the dwindling integrity of the ALP is a matter of personal importance to me, as you can probably tell.
