Friends at sea: Philippine, Vietnam coast guards hold first-ever joint exercise

On August 9, the Philippine Coast Guard and Vietnam Coast Guard hold bilateral drills off the coast of Bataan, facing the West Philippine Sea. It's the first sort of interaction of the two coast guards, from countries that are co-claimants in the South China Sea. The PCG says it hope for closer ties and "friendship" not only with Vietnam, but with other Southeast Asian coast guards. Bea Cupin was on board the PCG's BRP Gabriela Silang and filed this vlog.

I view w reasonable understanding Vietnam's occupation of part of Phil- owned Spratly Islands as tho not within their EEZ sea , it is only some kms further away to the Spratly Islands compared to Phils, unlike far-flung 1000 kms China.Vietnam also did not go beyond the Spratlys unlke China which leapfrogs to try to claim the almost all of SCS including parts of EEZ seas of Phils,Vietnam,Indonesia,Malaysia & Brunei. Both countries are experiencing China's aggressive actions, but unlike militarily weaker Phils, the better militarily- prepared Vietnam is able to deny Chinese coastguard & fish boats intrusion attempts in its EEZ waters.

Or watch carefully. The little PCG boat was the boat that's supposedly on fire in their simulation. The boat that the reporter was on is the BRP Gabriela Silang. A much larger Philippine Coast Guard boat and comparable to that Vietnamese boat.

​@@bancobiet1111​ The PCG boat is an aluminium hull type. Biggest of its kind at the time of construction. I don't know it's weight but im guessing it's lighter and more manoeuvrable than the VCG's DN2000. The BRP Gabriela Silang is 83.6m in length, a bit less than the DN2000 90.5 overall length. Both are great ships for its purpose. I wish to see more of this kind of cooperation so we can better protect our waters.

Southeast Asian countries with disputes in the South China Sea should resolve them among themselves without China. China has no legitimate basis to claim sovereignty over this sea. Vietnam and the Philippines need to unite and support each other to confront China’s overwhelming coast guard force. We are both receiving coast guard ships from the US and Japan.
