The authors made Joey dumber and dumber over the years, to the point that when Chandler moved out, he was more of his guardian than his roommate. This situation can happen in real life, but not very often. Now, if your friend has been paying all your expenses for a long time and he takes care of everything related to your house, it may be that he wants to continue paying even after he has moved... but it would be as rare as winning the lottery.
