We take tour of St Anne's Church in Alderney. Donald Hughes, our local island tour guide, showcases the church's unique features, such as the Judge French stained-glass windows, which were inspired by children from the Caribbean, Asia, and Alderney. The church also houses old bibles from 1850, as well as the oldest book on the island, which was made in the 1600s and disappeared during the Second World War, only to be returned 25 years later by a lady from Germany.
The other recovered item after the war was the church bells, which Donald explains were identified due to the names inscribed on them. Additionally, six new bells were added, thanks to a generous donation from the community, making St Anne's Church the only tower in the Channel Islands with 12 bells in total.
The "Holy Dusters" are the volunteer cleaning group who keep the church clean and tidy. Recently, due to water damage, the walls have experienced issues, making cleaning even more important. In the video, we learn about the Friends of St Anne's, founded by Stephen Ingham, which allows the community to help maintain the church for only £10 per year, paid in cash or contactless. We also meet the choir in their weekly practice, and the bell ringer giving Cam a crash course in bell ringing. We learn that not only has the world record been made for the longest peal, but Alderney also has its own music, which is known to be very difficult to play.
