episode 10 singlehandedly has the best usage of a flashback I've ever seen in any anime. every moment of the flashback was shown for the sole purpose of showing us how badly frieren would dunk on aura by the end of the episode, and not just for emotional impact or unnecessarily extending the episode . it’s SO masterfully crafted.

Have you seen more than just like three anime? Do you just watch recent ones like Demon Slayer? It's a clever flashback but I can probably name a few dozen that r objectively more emotional or plot driven for their particular story. I just find it laughable that frieren learned common sense about battling and because u struggle with common sense the idea of hiding her power blew your mind

@@SourceOfTheRightArm ngl demon slayer overuse flashback. At season 3 it become annoying and predictable

@@hanzaryunosuke2832 In demon slayer (I've only watch the 1rst season and the movie tho) are mainly used to humanize demon and give weight to Tanjiro's compassion, showing demons as some kind of victim. In Frieren they use it to advance the story, giving us lore (without giving us the feeling of just being an infodumb) and/or set up expectations. Frieren is not the only anime that use flashback the right way but it's a good thing they get it right because the concept of the anime almost revolve around flashback

In Flamme's time, human mages were few, and magic was misunderstood, even shunned by human society. So among human mages, having magic was something that was special, a gift, something someone should be proud to have. Flamme was part of this select few human mages who shared in this belief of magic, and as an expression of that is to wear your mana with pride since doing so made it easy to know other mages, few as they were. It is a matter of values, which went on a different way when it came to how demons went with it. Flamme losing her family, who were also mages (which must have been rarer at that time) led her to the path of concealing it as a weapon, a life of revenge. It was not easy to do, but she was talented enough to pull it off considering her short lifespan, driven by need for revenge. Flamme doesnt want to conceal her mana, but she had to, that is why she strongly feels that it is indeed a mockery, but one value she was willing to let go of for something else. And as we are shown, concealment is very hard to pull off successfuly.

"Aura, kill yourself." One of the most savage moments I've seen in any anime. This whole arc was incredible - short, to the point, and full of action and deadpan humor. It's what makes Frieren so good.

Aura, cuts own head off... Cheerful music, "and you alright!" 😂

They tell you in the first 5 min what will happen and still one of the most satisfying payoff and "combat" scene in anime history. That's how great the writing is...

The new coldest moment in anime. The reveal, how calm Frieren is during the whole thing and that ending!

The fact that they raise the level of the action AND storytelling through the whole season is crazy, this has become my goto anime to show people who have never seen anime

It would have been easy to animate her so it looks like she´s fast. But the studio went the hard way and make Fern´s movements look fluid and effortlessly.

Frieren just being peak as per usual, both as a character and as a show, peak animated fight on ep9 and peak storytelling on ep10 and one of the best power revel moment in anime history, what can you say, just gotta applaud.

Hiding your mana is like 2 warriors one turns their back and the other stabs him on the back. 28:36 you could say the other was smarter because he won, but it is a disgrace.

Yo, nice reaction! about the cowardly way to fight by hiding their powers, I guess you could see it like a heavyweight going up against a featherweight without the opponent knowing what's about to happen

Another way to put it would be like a Grandmaster making a smurf account to beat newbies at online chess.

I guess in a world where two mages fight eachother. The idea is to lay all the cards out on the table so both sides know they are respecting the other. If you hold back giving the other the idea that you both were giving it your all but in reality you had ssj3 in your back pocket, ueah you better beleive it's going to miss some mages off. I remember how bitter vegetables was when he found out goku was just humoring him.
