Many of you have asked if Rising Star could wear leg protectors. That is a good idea. But Risey still finds it very scary when his legs are touched. I thought it was too big a risk that if I put protectors on him, he would start making crazy jumps with all the consequences that entails. If it would be better for Risey in the longer term, I may still decide to use protectors.

Yvonne, I'm not an expert on horses...I just love them, and lots of other animals too. All I can tell you is that, growing up, I loved being active - climbing trees, hills etc., wanting to see all that I could. And yes, I'd sometimes come home with bruises & cuts, whivh my Mother cleaned up, asking me how I'd done them. As I got older, the injuries sometimes were worse, but part of life, as far as I was concerned. I think I learnt to live life 1 day at a time then, forgot it when I was older, but have relearnt it now that I'm retired & don't have as much energy. Looking at Risey, he seems to be handling his problem well now... (as far as I can tell). He looks like he's enjoying life...and is very affectionate. Winter is cold & icy here too, so I'm wondering if you could still let him run in the Arena, so that he doesn't risk falling & really hurting himself outside. Whatever decision you make, and when you make it, it will be difficult...but I'm sure your fans will support you, whatever you decide.. Can you slowly get Risey used to wearing leg protectors ? For very short periods of time at first, then a little longer...This might be the silliest idea you've ever heard, but what if it worked? Sending ❤ & Good Luck + prayers.

Yvonne, you know Risey better than any of us. I had forgotten how sensitive he is about having his legs touched when I asked about leg protectors. With all of the time and patience you spend working with him, there will come a day when he will let you put those protectors on. He is so lucky to have you taking care of him.❤️🙏🏼❤️

A KZbin channel called Ryan Rose has videos on how to desensitize a horse to having their legs touched safely. That might help with getting Rising Star to accept leg protectors.

I'm not being mean honestly but if a human can get their pinched nerve fixed why can't they on a horse. I had a pinched nerve in my neck and with therapy it doesn't bother me anymore. I read on a vet site that they can operate on a horse for wobblers. It's in the USA. I would help you pay for the trip. As I'm sure other Risey fans would. I don't know. He does love you and I'm Risey's biggest fan. But I do think in your heart you will know what to do and you second guessing everything I think you would regret it if you didn't give him more time. Trust Risey to tell you when he has had enough. My dog was diagnosed at 9 months old with wobblers. We had her until she was 5 years old. One morning when I was getting kids up and going for the day, I looked at my girl and I could see it in her eyes she had had enough. I let her go a few days later when she was having a better day and we went for long drive and a hamburger and then we said our goodbyes. This is a difficult road to travel and these decisions are hard to make but, it is the price we pay for having our animals in our lives to love and enjoy. Rising Star is 2 and half years old and already over 16 hands, definitely a sign of rapid growth. KWPN/Dutch Warmblood is one of those breeds that grow in height. He's growing that way because he's likely to be very tall or even taller than his parents, I pray that he naturally outgrows it and that hard measures don't have to be taken.

If you close a dog into a hause with the owner, it will be happy. If you close a horse into a box, will become mad, angry and will hate humans. Plus, they need to move due to their gastrointestinal system. As Yvone said, it's not so simple to stop a horse: it's the worst thing to do... for example, a horse always lock into a box can have a colic. It's not simple like to heal a dog/cat or humans.

@@elizabethwalter5744Thank you. Seems like the potential injury issue is being addressed full on, which is understandable. However, I don't see Risey as just a horse, and the decision has to be well thought out, just my opinion, as I see the other side of him and what he can be.

It’s not just about him being in pain. He can’t control his back end and could potentially have a tragic accident because of that. It’s not like having a dog or cat that you can keep quiet and calm.
@IIIRikaIII10 ай бұрын
When you see an horse in pain, it's just too late. Horses hide the pain because to show it is the perfect way to fall into a predator jaw: weak animals are the best prey. So, if you are waiting for a pain-demostration, you are waiting for a very sick horse and it's too late to care him. With horses you have to watch little signals (and Rising Star has BIG signals!). Luckly his owner is a groom and she know all these things. The rest is explained by nicolegrimm above here...

I understand the advice to put him down. It comes from a business perspective, as he may never be a sound horse. But is he in pain? Does he enjoy life? @Nutmeg14210 ай бұрын
This is not just a business prospective. He could fall and really hurt himself or others. He can’t run or move like a horse. You can give him time, but how much knowing he can’t get better. Horses aren’t people, when they have an accident and fall on you, something awful can happen and Yvonne has already been through a lot. I understand and support her in either choice and neither are just business.
@tfrtrouble10 ай бұрын
That is such an unfair comparison. A full grown horse of his breed weighs half a tonne. A horse that size without control over his limbs (but still trying to run kick etc) can be a seriously danger to himself and other animals and people. She clearly loves him; the "business" decision would have been to put him down before all this expensive vet treatment. It's a really difficult and heartbreaking decision for her and and your implication that putting him down would be like her saying disabled people should are worthless is so cruel. I hope she doesn't read your comment.

I've had 2 horses with serious health issues that each took 12+ months to resolve. For both, vets said it would never walk normally again, never mind riding. The key to their healing was listening to the horse, and giving it time to heal. My first one had severe laminitis. Vets said he could 'crash' at any moment and I should euthanize him. Yet when he was stall-bound, barely able to walk, he was bright, eating well, nickering at everyone. I could afford to pay for his board, feed and vet visits so I decided to give him time as long as he wanted to live. It was 14 months before I could resume light riding, but I had him for 15 years after that doing low level dressage. My second horse had nerve damage to his spine at his croup. X-rays showed his vertebrae had been broken by a fall, which also severely injured his left front knee. I purchased him as-is from a ribbon-hungry owner to give him a decent end-of-life which I thought was going to be a few months. Although he was hobbling, he was bright, eating, nickering for attention. I have the space so I gave him time. After a year, he was sound enough to restart short rides. That was 14 years ago. He's been a great trail horse, with the silliest personality. I also know time doesn't always help. I had a horse where it became very obvious, very quickly that the right thing to do was to put him down. His eyes had no light, he was in tremendous pain which was not improving. A hard, painful, but correct decision. For Risey, don't be too quick with a decision you can't undo. Him falling and injuring himself is a real concern. You don't want a horse with a broken leg. But a what-if might never happen. He's only 2.5 years old with a lot of growing and bone changes. Some questions to consider: Does he have good quality of life? Does he have the will to live? Is he bright? Is he happy? Can you afford to keep him? Can you afford to give him time? He seems happy and bright in your videos, but only you know the answers. Getting through serious health issues is a difficult up / down journey. Yes, vets have experience and knowledge, but healing is much more than facts and listening to your head. Listen to your heart. Listen to Risey and get his opinion. Time plus the will to live go a long way in healing.

He lived happy life, running, jumping and climbing up the curtains as a normal cat after several month of recovery. I know, it's all individual, but miracles happened. All horces can accidentally hurt themself (as human also), Risey just has a chance to do it bigger than others. There is never a right decidion, there is only a choice between what you are ready to do. I mean, you will understand when you need to say "goodbye" to him. I can tell you i went thru something similar when my young Tennessee Walker. She developed what is commonly known as opossum 23:14 was virtually untreatable at that time. Little to know control over her hind and falling easily. She was young and hurt herself a few times, and several vets said to put her down. Her eyes told me NO. She was willing to fight so I kept talking and looking and finally talked to a young vet that said we could try one more thing and it was affordable. Long story short, she pulled thru and was good for several more years. We had many good trail rides, but it was really bad for a very long time. I don't know the answer for you, but you know what you can handle and you know how Rising Star feels by his eyes and attitude. God bless you and give you peace. I do know some surgeries in our country have cured this supposed problem, but it's not always possible due to costs and location. (USA). The last horse I saw that was back doing his wirk was a roping Quarter Horse. It took simetime after his surgery, but he's back doing great.

Soberly speaking, there is no cure for this terrible disease. But we already knew that at the time of diagnosis. If it were my horse, I would decide on an individual basis, try all possible treatments to provide relief and if it really doesn't work anymore and the horse signals to me that it has had enough, I would let it go. But Risey definitely doesn't seem to be doing that yet and I'm sure you're doing your best so that when you look back you know that you tried everything you could and don't regret any decision. And if he hurts his legs, I would get him used to bandages that protect the limbs appropriately. It is also important that the owner can mentally conclude and all questions are clarified. It's also normal for you to feel sad about it, because the situation is sad. But there will also be beautiful moments, despite this illness and look how positively Risey takes it all. We can learn so much from our animals - they comfort us, go with us every step of the way and we suffer with them when things are bad for them. This is life and makes us what we are: human beings.. I am sure you will find your way, Yvonne
