It's really interesting they had a brotherly dynamic in the show. Usually, because you don't choose your brothers, adopted or otherwise, you don't get shows portraying best-friends relations, and certainly not between brothers. Our culture has tendency to not focus on any kind of platonic love and go more towards romance, and the actual events between Darwin and Gumball certainly would veer that way. If the setting was anything other than this especially outrageus cartoon, we would already have people calling it erasure of their "OBVIOUSLY" homosexual relationship. And just as obviously, if Darwin was a girl the show probably would get a lot of heat for outright promoting the other-sexual relationship of these fictional characters, equivalent of Darwinia being a live-in child bride. Maybe this is the level of differance Americans NEED in order to FINALLY distinguish between reality and fiction, and jsut LET the story happen. While something like anime has been successful at it, being less realistic than American media, but clearly not surrealistic enough to drive home the point.

The Amazing World of Gumball is the perfect example of what I like to call "Leveled Absurdity". It's a show where it embraces the fact that it is crazy and wild without making it obnoxious or blatant. The world simply IS wild, and that's just part of the characters lives, and it runs so seamlessly. If the creators wanted, they could probably have kept Gumball going for years upon years, but I'm glad they didn't. It'll forever be a modern cartoon classic, no doubt. Chowder followed a similar method, as did Flapjack, and both of these examples are just absolute gems of Cartoon history. It's always the wild shows that simply let themselves be wild that do the best, that'll never change.

The comedy of this show was really smart. It was either you get the joke or you don't either way we're moving on. Also Nicole and Richards relationship was so great. It wasn't perfect because no relationship is, but it was loving. My favorite episodes are usually when the whole family is involved running around.
@ThatGastrodon2 жыл бұрын
I love this show but I do wish we'd see a relationship that isn't patterned after the Simpsons for once.
@vullord6662 жыл бұрын
@@ThatGastrodon tbf it wasn't. All these shows family dynamics are patterned after the Flintstones or possibly the OG my wife in kids or even older. The lazy fat husband X nuclear family isn't really new. That said, Richard and Nicole brought a uniqueness in my opinion. Richard wasn't JUST an idiot nor was he the started trouble every episode with his hlf Brainerd ideas. He actually had a really good set of skills (leaning towards food and RPG/table top games). When you bring up something he knows, its crazy how intelligent he becomes about that one topic. And yeah, not the super most useful skills to society, but it shows him as good at "something" where as other models for the role are pretty much either just idiots (Homer) or have crazy ideas that ruin everyone's lives (Fred). People who eat a lot actually knowing how to cook and understanding food is one of my favorite overlooked traits. This is better than the lazy bum who just waits for other people to cook meals for them. And we see in episodes like when he was the game master of D&D or when Gumball was blackmailed that one club episode. I will say I have a soft spot for people with super unique skills with super niche moments of usefulness, but again this is leagues better than other characters in Richard's role who just bring nothing to the table other than trouble and everyone puts up with it for idk what reason because the relationship seems more abusive than loving. Plus Nicole wasn't just there doing the house work and dealing with Richard's laziness. She wasn't just ultra talented in everyway, but took serious effort to get Richard to think for himself and become more self sufficient. This point is front and center in several episodes. Like when Richard's mom comes and we see how he got that way from her not letting him make any of his own decisions. Richard actually learns from his mistakes here and there and grows and you can see that's BECAUSE of Nicole. You can actually see the two are better together than they are apart, and I love that. The show does an especially great job with each other's back stories and pasts in later seasons. Nicole confronting his parents and Richard confronting his dad and overall parental issues are some of my favorites (and another point, you can see that Richard does "try" as a father and even has some REALLY good talks about life with his kids a few times, which is more than I can say of Homer).
@jamalhartley58632 жыл бұрын
@@vullord666 whew I think I know who your favorite character is. But Richard is goofball but still a partner. He does take care of the kids and there's even an episode that shows that watching after three kids isn't easy.
@deerinheadlights71792 жыл бұрын
@@ThatGastrodon it has become a trope. That said it does not mean in any way that it can't be portrait different and instersting and i actually think Richard is a good yet unique example. You can say whatever you want but the Simpsons and all of the sort explore themes and Homer is not much a character as he is a plot device or used for shoving comments in your face. He just is not a character rather than a puppet that sure, has a structure and form but can be painted over or put in different clothes all the time. Richard at the other hand is a character on his own and is not lowered down to just the next Homer. At the very least it is made obvious he has more than just one emotional state, he has his story behind that somewhat show how he was shaped as a person and all. He has his own interests, he got knowdge of it and want to share it with his family... We see not only how he acts but also how he thinks and how others see him which make for some interesting questions and contrast and of course... makes him feel like his own character despite being in someone's else show. Sometimes he feels and even is looked at like some outcasted child rather than a father or a person. His relationship with Nicole is not as simple as it is with Homer too. They actually seem to have a reason to be together, the reason being they work together and know each other and are overall are better with each other as they have placed this middle ground, a stable point from were they can go in whatever direction they wish to... Overall they seem like pretty believable and realistic thinking adults and people on their own as you do not ask yourself why they are still together and instead are wondering about how would they look like outside of kid's perspective and show. Also they both try. Maybe there is not some montage shoved in your face with motivating music and sparkles and all, maybe there is not the clear moment of finally achiving a very specific goal with slow motion and ending the episode because otherwise you will have to go downhill realizing that such a thing will not and has never been important or center of your life... But it is still there. Slow just like adult's day go by, building little by little in a boring way that the scene just is not made for

I loved this show when it was airing. I was in my early 20s in college and a heavy smoker so this was a great show to unwind too. The amount of jokes that made me go and this is for kids was astonishing.

The show came out when I was in elementary school and I've been in love with it and it's comedy since the first episode I saw. It's one of the first shows that helped develop my sarcastic humour I'm known for. It had a lasting effect on me as well as how I tell jokes and stories, even now that I'm almost an adult.

For someone who only recently gave this show a shot, you certainly summed up literally everything I love about it perfectly. I watched the show since it first aired, and the evolution of both the art and the writing astounded me. It was already pretty good when it started airing, but over the years it somehow got even better. This is one of those animated shows that treats its audience like they have brains while also still having plenty of goofiness. (It can admittedly be a little excessive with its witty moments but that never stopped me from enjoying it lol.) It also had beautiful and heartfelt moments that brought tears to my eyes more than once. I quite literally grew up with this show, and I am SO hyped for the movie.

one interesting thing ive noticed is gumball does actually seem to age throughout the show with him starting it age 12, but by the end of the show its acknowledged several times that he is now in 8th grade

Huh? But he is still 12

Not to mention their song moments were the best! The one about the economy always gets me. So glad there’s appreciation of this show, it was definitely my favorite from CN. Carried me through HS and College and the like, and I was so sad to see it end. Truly a timeless piece of art.

and yet I'd still found The Amazing World of Gumball to be one of the Funniest Cartoon Network Shows in recent years with it's meta humor

I was already in college when I started watching TAWOG, and it quickly became one of my favorite things to watch. It was humorous without being overly crass with intelligent references and subtleties that I rarely found in other media.

This show was fantastic, I'm glad you covered it! Such a fun, weird, wild show to watch and I'm not even the target audience (I mean, I think, I understood all the humor, so maybe I am?)

This series has been really wonderful. Not only because your videos are always awesome but because I ordered a special advent calender that never came in. So this has been my advent calender, and even tho it isn't chocolate, I truly love it. Thankyou 🥰

I love, how the show is packed with adult jokes, just flying over the head of younger viewers. I used to catch it from time to time in my late teens-early twenties, watching it with my sisters. Sometimes I laughed so hard and they just couldn't get it. Really reminds me the early Spongebob episodes, which I have grew up with. Sometimes I see those old episodes again, getting all the adult jokes and I'm like "How I did not notice before? How did this made to an air?" I love when the creators hide these sweet spots for older audiences, having a caring thought towards the parents, watching cartoons with their kids.

I loved it, it didn’t include the weird problems of our modern day. It was just fine the way it was. And I’m happy.

The show kinda does in the later seasons (notably season 5 and 6).

I've been obsessed with Gumball from the very start and still am. I would love it if you could cover the shocking way it ended on the WORST CLIFFHANGER!

Honestly, this show gets like, zero attention. Not even bad attention, which is a refreshing change of pace with modern CN shows! But still, it's never really brought up outside of it's meme status. It's got great heart, especially if you grow up with these characters, and 8/10 times things aren't done in a mean spirited way (and when it is, it's with villains/antagonists/bullies). My favorite episodes are the ones that don't focus on the family, and highlight the side characters. Just a lot of memorable scenes to me than with the main characters. Overall, I love this show, and I put it on whenever I saw it on tv. I recommend it to everyone looking for a feel good comedy cartoon. ...also, hands-down my favorite joke is when Gumball & Darwin are testing makeup at the mall, and Gumball goes to wipe it off, but it just smudges his actual art asset and he goes "What happened? Why am I looking at the floor??". Even typing that up made me giggle. Works EVERY damn time.

Their ability to emulate any art style makes them the undisputed _masters_ of animated parody, imo. Example: characters playing a video game? It won't look like kinda blocky flash animation; it will look like a video game. Making it all the funnier when they put their own comedic spin on it! It's tied for my favorite thing to ever come out of Cartoon Network, hands down.

The fact that they made all the styles work together in a cohesive and continuitive world is the real miracle of this show. You dont know how impossible and difficult it is to make different art styles work well together without clashing. The contrast between characters on this show is literally PERFECT.

I really wanna take a moment to appreciate what an impressive task Fringemas is. Most content creators put out videos like this every few weeks or days, but Jordan's doing a new one each day for 25 days! That's incredible! It's really clear how much passion is going into this so I wanna say way to go man, this is really awesome.
