It is not only his magnificent voice, his diction is the best I have ever heard. This is the German language at it's best, every word sounds just perfect. Fritz Wunderlich was simply a master of his craft. His unfortunate death at 36 was a terrible loss to Opera, so sad.

I heard his Don Ottavio in Munich in 1966, & am happy to report he sounded EXACTLY the same in the theatre. I'd never heard his name before & by the end of his first aria, I knew he'd be MY singer from that night onward. I can still hear the rapturous ovations after each aria & see his modest, gracious smile as he took his curtain calls. I was stunned to read of his death in Opera News just a few months later. No singer since, male or female, has come close to replacing him in my heart.

Listening to this version fills me with such joy that I feel like crying and cannot stop playing it over and over again. He is the quintessential. I would call him the perfect Mozart tenor for his technical ability and also, say the perfect tenor, for I have heard him sing, Lyric, Dramatic, and Spinto. How many tenors or singers in general can have light beauty with dramatic weight and spinto power. Only words like perfection and divine are accurate for him, but alas I don't think they quite captivate his voice.

@franziskakre83097 жыл бұрын
