Keenan, you are a very good teacher... your demonstrations along with your explanations are at a perfect pace & easily understood. Thank you for your videos. I'm a white belt & your vid posts have been very helpful along the way...this particular video is one of my favorites; I consistently revisit before & after classes to refresh my thoughts & hopefully speed up the instinctual responses when rolling. I am making progress... Cheers!

I've been struggling with people who have a good knee/leg drags and I was trying to get my knee drag better to beat them but I was wrong!!! Nowadays, I'm working on my spider guard, lasso, squid, collar and the modifications.. opponents seem to regret attempting the drag .. or even placing their hands on my knees 😁 Ur game plan is great - Thanks for the vids

Very good concepts here! So as these are 8 layers of defense (from better to worst), do you mean that our task is to transition or to get back to the previous "level of guard" if we are on offense (ex: from lasso going back to spider? or rather trying to hit a sweep from each level of guard if not gettting a submission)? Thank you so much 🔝🔝🔝

Definitely a cool training concept in terms of distance management and transitioning. However don't quite see the logic in playing spider guard first when the opponent is standing. The spider guard is inherently much weaker when your opp is standing. i would probably set up the single sleeve to collar sleave, if the opponent goes to knees, then play spider / lasso. if the opponent puts one leg forward, go DLR, or tries to pass DLR, go to reverse de la riva or even better to go X. then transition from x to the back since I don't want to play deep half guard. If the opp falls on his butt from de la riva, then start boloing.

That's what I thought when I was a white belt too. After a while I found people get too good at opening your closed guard so started playing a lot more open guard and now I only use closed guard if I'm forced to
@bryanlaiko66853 жыл бұрын
The concept of guard retention only applies to open guard and the four points of contact. In closed guard if you play it right then it should never get passed. But if you watch Keenans sparring videos, you will notice not a single opponent gets him in closed guard. High level players wont even let you get too that point. In this video the position Keenan starts from is a position you might fall into in a failed guard pull attempt. After you learn to establish these different types of guard, you will start to learn sweeps from these guards that you can use to reverse position and come on top. My take downs suck, so I've been devoting my time to learning sweeps.

Maybe it's because I'm dumb but what are the names of the 8 layers. All I got was: 1. No Contact 2. Spider 3. Lasso 4. De La Riva 5. Reverse De La Riva 6. Knee Shield 7. Quarter 8. ?? And didn't you say knee shield is part of reverse de la riva so what are 7 and 8 if that is the case??
@matheusaraujo73939 жыл бұрын
+NateTheItalianStallion deep half guard is the 8th and last layer
@natedepigeone9 жыл бұрын
Matheus Araújo But isn't that a progression? From what I notice the list goes 1 to 2 to 3 by losing position to losing position to losing position. It would be weird for it to have that trend to suddenly gaining a position. Like I'd rather be in deep half guard than quarter guard
@matheusaraujo73939 жыл бұрын
You're right. Let Keenan answer that question
@matheusaraujo73939 жыл бұрын
+NateTheItalianStallion I think that I'd rather have a lasso guard than a spider guard, a dela Riva than a lasso. And a knee shield than a reverse dela Riva. But I'm only a blue belt

Question why are yoou wearing karaty gis but wrestling? thanks
@JDMixes18 жыл бұрын
The gi is a part of grappling that lets the practitioners have more positions open to them with the use of the gi. There are many viewpoints about the effectiveness of the gi with grappling but from what I concluded it is that it allows more positions for practitioners and it slows the game down due to the friction and extra grips. This forces a practitioner to rely more on positioning and technique as opposed to just explosiveness and slipping out. That is not to say that not wearing a gi does not have its advantages. My comment is simply an observation I made from training both with and without the gi and does not represent the ideology of the grappling community as a whole.
