As someone who plays in a jazz big band and combo, you nailed this Also the rhythm at 4:36 is called a clave. Typically a 2nd percussionist plays a wood block/fills with timbales at the beginning
@pollosasadosalcarbon
@pollosasadosalcarbon 7 ай бұрын
this is just one of many claves, even bossa uses several types of claves, not even considering other genres i am actually latin american and percussionist and man i love claves so much, i feel them in my soul and body so hard, especially after that adam neely video where he explained claves as a lopsided metronome, that shit was eye opening

As a Brazilian, I just wanted to make an errata, bossa is not a subgenre of jazz, it is actually born from samba that came from the outskirts and goes through a process of cultural appropriation by a richer, whiter class, especially in Rio de Janeiro, which used jazz references on top of samba in order to make samba more commercial to foreign people, but the root and initial genre of bossa is samba, which is a specifically Brazilian rhythm

@@GDRhythmic I don't believe there's anything wrong with enjoying bossa nova also considering that it played a role in important social subjects like in the fight against Brazil's military dictatorship Like even though it's more elitist than other genres there's nothing necessarily wrong with liking it there's still artists and a history involving the genre that has nothing to do with this cultural appropriation but it is a good thing to know and understand when sharing or criticizing tradicional bossa nova songs this is all just my opinion tho id like to hear what other ppl think 😭

Im a big fan of bossa nova and that chord progression is known as the classic 2-5-1. basically you take the 2nd note of the scale and turn into a minor 7th, and then you take the 5th and 1st note of the scale and turn them to major 7ths. It is such a simple formula and it just sounds so good and funky. love the vibe!

Adding a tritone substitution (from ii-V-I to ii-ii♭-I) makes it all the more interesting. It's used a lot in the Getz/Gilberto (holy grail) recording a ton, and it adds a descending chromatic (1 semitone) progression into a resolution, which gives a spicy tension yet a satisfying resolution.

I guess I may have perfect pitch too, because as you put each chord in, I thought the next ones should be the same as you did! Great tutorial, Frizk! You're genuinely inspiring me. I've never managed to have any musical ideas before, but your "how-to/how I made" videos have helped me a lot! I might even try writing something soon.
@texoco9280
@texoco9280 9 ай бұрын
I dont think you have perfect pitch, as that is being able to immediately recognise any note that you hear, like seeing colours and being able to sing (for instance) a D perfectly without a reference. I think you just have a lot of musicality and flow, which are much more important than being able to tell what note is being played. Have fun making music though :)

What Frizk calls perfect pitch here seems closer to "relative pitch", which is more about knowing the relation between notes. E.G., if someone plays for you a C and an A, you can hear that it's a major 6th/minor 3rd interval

If you're old enough to experience video games of the late 80s and 90s, there are some game music remixes out there where the artists used FL Studio. A lot of the Sonic the Hedgehog themes had jazzed up remixes. I even remixed an X-men game level and did it in a jazzy house style!

It’s interesting, seeing all the people in this comment section being amazed how you said “making music is fun,” while the whole point of making music is to HAVE FUN! Be creative, improvise, change that instrument that is out of place, add that drum beat to give it a nice vibe, let your imagination go! So, keep doing what you’re doing, and have fun! ❤️ - ThatsOwen | 11/28/2023
