Have had my R8 for 15 months. Took it on a 14 day trip to the UK and Ireland. I took 4 batteries, but really never used more than 11/2 in a day. I took a little over 5,000 pictures and it rarely missed focus. Low light was awesome. What a fantastic camera

I bought the R8 as my first full frame back in April, when it came out. I am really satisfied with the camera. No IBIS isn't that much of a hindrance to me and even the overheating is not a problem. Only when I shoot lots of 4k 60fps footage on warm days does it start to overheat. Never to the point of shutdown though. Battery life is not great, but I am always carrying 3 spares, so thats not a problem either. For glass I use the 70-200, f2.8 and 35mm, f1.8 most of the time. 10/10 would buy again. Happy with my choice.

I moved from the EOS-R to the R8, and overall, the R8 is a great camera. I shoot landscapes and macros (wildflowers, etc) and the features missing from the R8 vs the R6MkII were just not important enough to justify an extra $1,000. The R8 images in low light have low to non-existent noise, even at high ISO's. The AF, especially when shooting macro is far and away better than the R. With the R, I could not rely on AF to be accurate when shooting macro, and had to shoot with MF. With the R8, the focus is much more accurate, and i rarely have to manually focus on macro shots. There is one GLARING PROBLEM with the R8: It has a propensity to overheat in moderate temperatures, when shooting photos (not video). This has occurred to me several times while shooting outdoors. I was shooting single shot photos, sometimes a few minutes apart, in 70-80 degree low humidity weather, and have had the camera warn of "overheating" and then shut down. These temperatures are FAR below the operating limit of the camera. When it first happened, I sent the camera to Canon and they said it operated normally, which I dispute. It has since occurred several more times, and I have spoken to Canon support about it, but they are lost. I don't believe it is a wide spread issue, but a quick Google search will show that I am not the only one with this issue. Canon needs to address the overheating problem.

I had a sightseeing trip to southern Utah come up right when the R8 was released and couldn't wait to put my new camera through its paces. I was and still am thrilled with its performance, but I immediately ran into the same overheating problem on that sightseeing trip. I've found I can't carry this camera mounted on my Cotton Carrier without turning it off and either covering it with my hand or with the waterproof covering attached to the Cotton Carrier and expect to still be able to use it again. Any direct exposure to the heat of the sun to the back of the camera will overheat it within only a couple of minutes. Edit: stupid autocorrect grammatical error

BATTERY GRIP FOR R8 ???? YES . ... there is a battery grip that works on R8. The 3rd party battery grip made for RP, such as Vello BG C18 , fits and works perfectly on my R8. Includes a 2nd shutter for vertical shooting. So you can have double battery power. Bought my BG 3 years ago for RP at B&H. When I saw your first R8 video mentionning the Canon's extension grip I just KNEW that the BG C18 would also fit R8. Immediately ordered R8 when it was announced. Been shooting R8 with battery grip for several months now. Indeed my go-to camera now despite my RP, R6, R5C ... Sure I like 4K120 on R5C but I very much LOVE 2K180 on R8, too, and the lightweight for hiking, birding, travelling, and how fast the camera shifts from photo to video mode or vice-versa compared to R5C 's multi-seconds pause... also dislike on R5C that there is no AWB at 120fps video... P.S. I lost the tiny cable for the BG , found replacement on aliexpress for 1 dollar plus shipping ;-)

Choosing a camera is, like you said, finding out what trade offs you can live with. I absolutely love the r8 and the r6 mark ii would not have been worth the thousand dollars more for me at this moment of time. I am used to the battery life, as my previous camera used the same one. I always packed 2 or 3 batteries while shooting out and never had an issue. Ibis is useful, but i don’t shoot lower shutter speeds that often, so no problemo for me. Only electronic shutter…well I wouldn’t really notice the difference from a mechanical one anyway, especially since I don’t shoot sports. For me, there is no way that spending thousand dollars more would be justified for my uses. In fact, after trying out this camera for the last few weeks, I feel this is the camera I’ve been waiting for. It packs all the features that are essential to me, and perhaps even more than I will need. Safe to say I am as impressed with this camera as you seem to be!

I have R8 since it came out. I previously used a 5DmkII. I like to go for multi hour hikes in the forest and this is somewhat problematic with R8. I keep the camera at the ready and it is possible that the viewfinder will remain on as the camera bounces off my stomach, which will drain the battery real quick. I would go with r8. R7 is good but it does get unnatural noise/color pretty quickly when raising the iso and for most people I would say go with the r8 (or a fuji instead for aps-c) with some exceptions like wildlife. Camera shake can be countered with faster shutter speeds, not to mention the IS that some lenses do have. I would definitely go r8 if you are on the fence.
@BlissfullyIgnorant Жыл бұрын
@@ryanclouse299 But raising the ISO to what degree? I tend to try and keep in the ISO super low if I can help it. So like what kind of numbers are we talking?
@ryanclouse299 Жыл бұрын
@@BlissfullyIgnorant You only really need 1/(focal length) shutter speed minimum as a rule of thumb. Maybe a little more if you aren't careful with the shot. The iso on the r8 should be around 2 stops better than the r7 anyway due to tech and pixel size/density. You also have tools like good ai denoiser now too. I generally shoot at 1/250 anyway for general people despite being well over the needed handheld shutter speed. Ibis only helps for handheld and not for subject motion. Its only really useful for static objects, Longer focal lengths and video. I think most longer lenses usually have some sort of IS anyway. I would argue correct exposure is much more important than a little bit of noise, and it sometimes is the difference between having the shot and having nothing. Don't be afraid of using iso 6400 iso etc. I was also worried about having high ISO at first. :)
@BlissfullyIgnorant Жыл бұрын
@@ryanclouse299 But can't you get more stops with IBIS? And it gives you like 5 more or something? And really again I'm no too concerned with ISO. R7 says it can go to max 32000 which is more than enough for me. They are both pretty similar spec/hardware wise honestly except for a few things and difference in features, which most still make me lean towards the R7. It has IBIS (which is the main reason I want it, because I like shooting handheld, because I like getting weird angles and unique perspectives), anti dust shutter, longer battery life, and two card slots. The only reason I'd really get the R8 is the bigger sensor, and maybe because it has the latest auto focus from the R6, but even then, R7 still seems to have perfectly good tracking and focus.

I've been a semi-professional photographer since the 90's... then left it for another career but never stopped as a hobby. I've got a lot Nikon gear.. including the D750 and some ok glass for it... also have the D5500, and an IR converted one.. and some flash equipment.. But I don't use most of what i have and I have too much. I was thinking of '1 camera to rule them all'... and was looking at the Nikon Z5. The 2 most important things for me shooting: Focus speed/accuracy (did it do it quickly, and where i wanted it?) and the manual controls. Can I dial in the exposure with 2 dials? (1 for aperture and 1 for shutter speed)? After that, lightweight, ergonomic, easy menu system, quick to 1st shot, and of course sharp images. I'm willing to sell all my Nikon stuff if the R8 can do it all. I don't need 5+ lenses and 2+ bodies. I just want 1 24-105 and 1 long telephoto. I can get a different flash controller.. not a big deal there. What would you do? I don't like the way Sony's feel in my hand. I do like the feel of Nikon but I miss a lot of shots because of the autofocus. I take photos of children, street portraits, animals, and I'm always in a rush... so quick and light is what i want. Thanks for any advice... or confirmation the R8 is a really good way to go for what I'm describing... Can't believe I'm considering moving back to Canon again.. I had it in the film days and liked the lighter setup.. but went with Nikon because it was the 'pro's choice' and I wanted to look cool. The N8008s and F100 were both great cameras though... :) And.. the D750 is no slouch either.

If it helps I tried out the R8 and returned it fast. It gets hot in photo mode, arguably too small (especially the strap, it has significantly less width than the basic model), the EVF isn't very good and the battery life is surprisingly terrible. Personally I'm waiting for R62 to get cheaper and just get it. If you only take casual photos then R8 is perfectly fine, but the heavier your usage is, the more problematic it gets.

would you recommend this camer for videos? is this just as good for videos as it is for pictures?
@Ryan_Powers25 Жыл бұрын
I've owned the Lumix S5 and the RP. I loved the ergonomics of the RP but the low light performance and color science were way below the Panasonic's, (The only exception were the skin tones, I preferred the look of Canon's.) No surprise there since the RP is an entry level ff camera. How is the R8 in low light, at high ISOs? I'm into handheld street photography. I'm thinking of buying the new Sony A7Cii but it's more expensive than the Canon and since I will get it with something like a 20-60 lens, it will be heavier than the Canon rf 20-105 lens which was amazingly light.

After two days in the field - battery is absolutely not an issue - on electronic shutter lasts about 1.2-1.5k photos over the period of 2h constantly on. I have two - one charging i the backpack while i shoot the other...worked like a charm.
@Cuthalu Жыл бұрын
@@BajsMejnijak I was testing the AF and tinkered with the menu and the battery died in over an hour (0 photos). I don't think taking pics is what really drains the battery on this one, it's the AF (and EVF). Can't reliably shoot an event without additional battery. Not the biggest hurdle, but it's definitely something to keep in mind.

Hey Jared! I was thinking of picking up the R8, but my only concern would be the warping of shooting at 40FPS. Does that happen only in basketball, tennis type sports? I only shoot cars, and airshows. Think the R8 would do ok in those situations?

Panasonic body like s5ii make more senses, you have to consider the cost of lenses and body together. How much will you have to pay for canon? For Lmount camera , you get countless wide pricepoint and still have quality glass, when you buy r8 and if you are on budget you have no other options than canon line of budget lenses.
