Hi there Jared. Before I begin I do want to say how I love almost all of your views on the huge Nikon line. This comment however is on your comment on the D7100 viewfinder plastic protector. I'm mainly a videographer / filmmaker so sadly for those that are not video people don't know all of the complaints of when a Photographer comments on some features that they are not aware what some features are needed. I recently purchase the D7100 and I was very disappointed that they did not have the plastic viewfinder protector which I also own the D7000 and it uses the viewfinder plastic protector. Almost all viideo people need that plastic viewfinder protector because it attaches to the accessory LCD eyepiece to block the bright sunlight when filming video. Since the D7100 does not have the viewfinder protector we have to resort to purchase an LCD viewfinder eye piece that connects to the tripod screw hole on the bottom which cost a great deal more. And if you use a battery grip then that poses a problem finding the LCD viewfinder eyepiece that can utilize with a battery grip. There are a few out there but they range around $300. Since the D7100 does not have the eyepiece protector you cannot purchase the eyepiece that usually cost $30.00 to $50.00. The product "Neewer Perfect Foldable 3" LCD Viewfinder 3X Magnification. There is the MegaGear DSLR LCD Screen Viewfinder on Amazon which comes with a little metal frame piece that has some adhesive on the metal frame to be stuck on the LCD but I've used that before and within a matter of a few weeks the viewfinder piece falls off the metal adhesive piece off of the back.

Let's call this a preview shall we? First off this is NOT a pro camera so 6 shots at 14 bit is perfectly fine in my book. Don't motor drive and you wont have an issue. Second I was told by Nikon during a call that you could change those settings. If they gave me false information then they gave me false information by accident. The review is still left to be done which is more important than anything. Please don't be condescending to me about certain things.

I've watched several of your videos on the setting up of the D7100, different lens and RAW VS JPEG. Thank you for taking the time for putting these videos together. I've recently took my D7100 to a sweet sixteen birthday party and with the camera set up for both RAW and JPEG, I've learned to look more at the difference between RAW images vs JPEG images. After loading all the images on my computer and looking at the side by side images, I have to say that the RAW images were MUCH better looking over all the JPEG. Thank you so much for the lessens on digital cameras. I have prior experience since 1985 with the F3 then in the mid 90's with N90s and I am now learning more about the digital camera D7100.

Thanks for the preview, Jared! The only thing I'm jealous of coming from my D7000 is the lack of low-pass filter and the awesome 51-point AF system (same as the D300S). In my opinion the D7100 isn't a significant step up from the D7000 and Nikon could have included more pro features into it to satisfy the fans of the discontinued D300S. It still seems like a killer camera, I'm just surprised we didn't see a higher native ISO, 10-pin connectors, or additional FN buttons.

I don't know, keep in mind that people buy a dslr to get into photography, a 50 1.4 or 1.8 will teach you the difficulties of a low DoF, chasing sharpness, and a constant length will also make you move with your feet and work the scene, something that amateurs don't do and won't do unless they are on a fixed focal length. The first lens I bought with my D70s was a 50mm f1.8 series E manual lens and it was my favorite to shoot with.

It's so crazy to me that you don't think of this as a pro camera. I have a d3000 and I just wish I could afford something faster. I shot weddings with my Canon a1 and the d7000 is lightyears ahead of that. This d7100 really seems like more than anyone would ever need.

What you are saying is completely true. You can create fantastic images with the D3100, totally right, but i think that next to image quality, ergonomics and features are just as important. In the D7100 i see all i have with my D3100 together with what i still need plus some extras. My images won't improve by it, that's for sure, but if that's the case i sell my D3100, go shooting my Yashica Minister III all the time, which takes great pictures too, but it takes a bit longer. Thanks anyway :)!

Depends on what is 'good' for you, but yes all the performance specs will easily outdo the D3100, plus being able to use a much wider range of Nikon and 3rd party lenses.

For people that don't want to be professionals, the 18-105mm is a well regarded lens. Please don't listen to the Fro when he said it is crappy even though he tried to correct himself. You can also find it on the used market, many times new as people think it's crap and will sell it for a price not close to what it's worth.

which generation of the 70-200 2.8 do you have? the newer one would be better used on the d600 (as you'll be using it to it's full potential). If you got an older generation 70-200 2.8 then I'd suggest a 7100 as these older lenses preformed better on the crop sensors.

Currently looking at the d7100 (new) or a used D700 (with a pretty low shutter count). I was going to go D600, but as Jared preaches, it's all aboout the glass. I'm going to wait for the d7100 and spend the $800 in savings on an FX lens. You keep glass forever. I'll upgrade to an FX body when the upgrade for the d600 comes out. My budget is $3000, so I'd rather have 2 or 3 FX lenses, rather than just one I'd be limited to if I bought the d600. Also, I want to start shooting video and the clean video out is a great option to have on the d7100. Good luck to you.

Should my next body purchase be the D600 (FX full frame) or the D7100 (DX 1.5 crop). I do 90% sports photography. I would really appreciate you input. And if you suggest the D600, what about the dust and oil issues with the D600.....is that issue now fixed or are the D600's still having these issues?

"Negligible. Good word, by the way, negligagable." :D Those 51 autofocus points sound great, but I hope they don't screw them up the way they did in the D600. I love the Switchy McSpingerson, I wouldn't want to lose that. I also don't believe that they won't have a D300s replacement because this is not a pro-level DX camera, unlike the D300s. I highly recommend getting a fast lens like the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 non-VC, I have it and I love it. The 17-55 is extremely expensive.

Just wondering what your thoughts were for someone who just recently purchased the D7000 when it went on sale back in December. Would it be worth selling the D7000 body, which has been a proven winner, to purchase the new D7100 body now? Limitations all depend on what you shoot. Example: If you're shooting strictly studio portraiture and you never go above your lowest native ISO, never need 7fps and or an advanced autofocus system that can track fast moving subjects, then there would be no reason to upgrade. There are photographers out there that are using the D3100 and getting results that make me wanna sell my D600. Your knowledge of photograhy is what makes great photographs, not the latest and greatest camera body ;-)
@piperpilot2611 жыл бұрын
You making mention of the D300s got me thinking. If Nikon was to design a replacement (D400?) would there be any room in the market? Seeing that full frame bodies are now sitting at the $2,000 mark, would it make sense to release a pro DX body for slightly less than that? I mean sure, It would have a killer body and the focus and frame rate to match, but would there be a demand? hmm.
@socc3r7k1ng11 жыл бұрын
In my honest opinion the D7100 would be a better option over the D600. The D600 is a cheap full frame which by the release of the D7100 makes you seek more. I know it's full frame etc etc but I use FX lenses with my D7000 and now my D7100. I would take the D600 over the D7000 but not the D7100. If your going to go full frame wait for a newly updated FX body that would be the next step up from the D600. I think the D600 got snubbed and was prematurely released. Maybe do a vid on the comparison?

My counterpoint was that most people buying DSLRs don't really care about chasing sharpness, or DOF. Also, moving your feet isn't the same as zooming in, but most people aren't going to learn that just b/c they have a 50mm or a kit; moving your feet doesn't compensate for a different angle of view. Furthmore more, when newbies finally get a 50, all they really can about is making the background blurry. Also, I know 50mm lenses used to come with cameras, but they're not best for the avg consumer.
