In this edition of Talking insomnia we get to know Sarah. Sarah had no troubles with sleep until the summer of 2022.
Seemingly out of the blue, sleep disappeared and she found herself moving to her guest bedroom, taking medications, trying CBTi, acupuncture and seeing a chiropractor without finding relief.
Seven months later, she is back in her own bed and sleeping without any pills, rituals or efforts. This is her story of finding herself again.

Just want to say that is is amazing when people get well. But also that acute insomnia and Insomnia can have other reasons that you have to investigate. For me it was the beginning of autoimmune encefalitis. Now I have severe severe insomnia but also other symptoms and autonomic dysfunction and pain in my brain. Fatigue etc. how do you do with insomnia due to medical residual effects? That can actually be harmful. I think I can be awake until I die I hate medicines but scared not to take it. They make me worse in many ways so may life is awful. 😢

Hi Anna, Thanks so much for the encouragement. Sorry to hear about the health issues and sleep struggles. We actually define insomnia here as an ongoing struggle that happens when we are scared of being awake, and poor sleep due to health issues as “sleep disruption”. I think this video can help. Sarah was such an inspiration. I still remember when Coach Michelle introduced her to me and she said that Sarah had more or less the same amount of time as me with this journey, and I just wondered how does she looked so calmed and so peacefull and I was such a wreck. But as the lessons passed and went further into the teachings and with her replys on the app, I started to understand. Im still integrating all the teachings but have found myself in the same position of when I saw Sarahbthe first time. Still some days better than others but finding more good days than bad days. Thank you Sarah, for being an inspiration. -Lizaida

Sarah's story resonates so much with me! I have been trying so hard at CBT-I and it feels like it has put even more pressure on me. I feel like I have even more anxiety about sleep with the limited sleep window and still don't fall asleep when it's finally "time" to go to bed, even though I can barely keep myself awake until then. My insomnia just seemed like it appeared one day out of the blue and I experience anxiety all day about how I'm not going to be able to sleep at night. I have tried all the sleep hygiene recommendations, which just feel like a joke to me. I know my issue will not be resolved by sleep hygiene strategies, and sleep restriction therapy has been excruciating and anxiety-inducing. Thanks for sharing your story, Sarah. It makes me feel better knowing that someone else (probably many others) has experienced what I am experiencing and that it's possible to get through it!

I'm sure it can be effective for some people. But it was not effective at all for me, and, in fact, made my insomnia the worst it had ever been. After finding Coach Daniel's channel 7 months ago when I posted, I quickly recovered fully from my insomnia. I practiced "befriending sleeplessness" by reading a nice book when I wasn't able to sleep. And I stopped worrying about getting a certain amount of sleep because I knew I'd be ok with however little sleep I got. NATTO, people sharing their stories, and Coach Daniel's educational videos changed my life forever. My experience has even put me on a more expansive emotional and spiritual journey that has improved my life substantially. I am actually grateful for having experienced my insomnia because now I know I can get through really difficult things. Thank you so much, Coach Daniel, you are a life saver!!

I found this before they even put me on CBTi I will inform Them of this channel and your philosophy Daniel. I’ll still Attend that appointment I’m Having sped bumps but not near enough any nights at all of complete sleepless ness. I remember the trigger clearly since then I have not been the same. But I hope I find my way back home Again. I don’t want sleep to be another thing on the list of worries.

I have an appointment with Michelle next week and am really looking forward to starting your program. My question is: I am in the last stages of titrating off mirtazapine/Remeron which is the hardest part. I took it for insomnia and now, of course, the insomnia is kicking back in. I am afraid that the chemical aspect of all this is what's causing my insomnia and it will control my recovery. Your program makes so much sense. I really want to do it.

Hi Jane, So glad you’re working with Michelle, she’s amazing 🙂 This is how we look at the common situation you are in: When we are not taking medication to sleep, then two things are happening. (1) We aren’t taking the medication and (2) we are aware of not taking the medication. And when we are aware of this, then we often wonder if we are going to sleep or not. We wonder if we should maybe have taken half of it. We wonder if maybe we aren’t going to sleep at all. We wonder if we will ever get off the medication. And this - this worrying and this preoccupation, THIS is what makes us have trouble sleeping when we stop taking something! Sure, the absence of a chemical in the system can cause some excitement in the nervous system that it formerly was sedating, but that doesn’t cause insomnia. That in itself could make us more awake, but being awake without being scared of being awake is just… being awake. Rebound wakefulness is not insomnia. The reason for rebound insomnia is knowing that we are not taking the medication and being afraid of not sleeping. Being aware of this can really help. Because we see that the medication in itself isn’t what matters at all. And when this is clear, and we continue to show the brain that being awake is okay, that it’s not a threat, then things get easier and easier.

I am two weeks into horrific insomnia (never had any issue prior to two weeks ago so I relate to her story) and am completely sold on your program and am expecting your books to arrive from Amazon tomorrow. In the meantime what to do if the sleep deprivation is at a dangerous place- yesterday I passed out in the grocery store and am debating if it’s even safe to be driving knowing I may not sleep well for some time. I drive for my business and have family responsibilities.

Hi Colleen, So sorry about what’s happens but glad you found our channel so soon. Hope the books will make a big difference! I’ll say that every human who drives has a responsibility to not drive when we think it’s not safe - for any reason. With this said, it can help much to ponder what really happened when we collapse. You know how in movies they say “sit down, I’ve got something to tell you” - that’s because when we get upsetting thoughts, we can become dizzy and even fall.

I was the same way and I found out I was bipolar. I experience insomnia on both ends of the spectrum. after 4 months of CBTI did nothing.

Question 🙋‍♂️ I noticed when I had a job I did not have insomnia and now that I don’t have a job I just all of a sudden have it. Would that be because I went from being distracted from when I had a job to now that I don’t But how does this change things?? Thoughts Coach Daniel

Hi! Yes very common, when our attention is elsewhere, we just didn’t think about sleep and it then happens by itself … randomly we think “why can’t I sleep” and then we may have some struggle

hi coach Daniel i really need advice I've had insomnia problems since last April from an incident that happened to me, since then it's never been the same. I don't have anxiety about how will I function the next day as having sleeping problems for so long you adapt to functioning with only 2 hours sleep so my anxiety isn't linked in this, it's linked in how I will never sleep the same again. before all this I went to sleep no problem, never needing to think how I will sleep, but every single night now I always need to deal with the anxiety of "what if I don't sleep tonight" and sometimes it's fine, othertimes it's not. I get depressed about feeling like I will never be able to have a bedtime or an early nights rest. for example, tonight I had a massage and I was so relaxed and sleepy and I was ready to go to sleep, until I noticed it was only 11.30pm and I immediately got anxious because I thought "that's so early, no way are you gonna fall asleep now, especially because you got 8 hours sleep last night". it just feels I will never fully be okay again, like I can sleep okay for a few nights, maybe even a week, but no longer than that because I just always have sleeping problems now. what do I do?? please help, I'm so depressed because of this, I just wish I could have a bedtime again and sleep like how I did before

Hi Amanda, this whole thing started Last year April for me as well. I never had issues with sleeping just like you said it's like I can fully relate to everything you said. I think we just have to accept we are normal. I sleep sometimes waking up and it feels like I haven't slept or when I'm asleep enjoying my sleep something seems to always happen that wakes me up 1000 times a night lol.

Anytime and you know, I see no reason that wouldn’t happen. What can help is that we have some regularity in terms of then we start our day, then things fall into place by themselves in the evening

Hi there, I am seeing in a lot of these videos that people find watching TV or doing art or playing video games to be enjoyable but when I wake in the night I do not feel physically well.. I sometimes feel like I have been hit by a bus! So therefore does not feel "enjoyable" to do anything in that state but continuing to lie there also increases my hyperfixation on not sleeping. Any advice?

Hi Daniel, I have a new question. I had been pretty much free of any sleep issues until recently. I can not seem to sleep tonight and 2 nights ago it was the same deal. Yesterday I luckily slept. Today I have also taken a cheap sleeping pill (diphenhydramine hcl) and still haven’t been able to fall asleep. If it’s worth anything, I feel my eyes get heavy and they close on me consistently when watching tv, but as soon as I turn the tv off, it’s like I’m right back to life. Why is this? I also think it’s important to add that I experienced something traumatic about 3 days ago. But despite all my education I’m still confused.

Hi Daniel, if amygdala triggers for reasons we cant control like sleep, then how to fix that? Fear thought from brain "now I got you. here you cant win, you can control many things but you cant control sleep. So you are not gonna win here, so no sleep, you are gone. Technically". I have complete education rationally that its false trigger but inner mind not able to accept.

If dog bites us, we can do exposure therapy by facing dogs. But sleep is beyond our control thats invisible trait then how our fear will go? How we are exposed to fear sleep though? Lastly, can I heal with videos here or there some extra in paid section needed. I would love to take it

Hi, It’s paradoxical but “how to fix it?” IS what I see as the attempt to have control - which is why we struggle. When we no longer try to fix, it’s fixed, there wasn’t anything broken. Exposing ourselves to fear simply means not trying to stop it when it happens. We have no secrets! All our teachings are here for free. I have chronic insomnia for more than 2 years. I fall asleep fast, but can only sleep for 5h, which isn't enough. I want to try CBT and sleep restriction. So, should I go to sleep at 3am and fix the wakeup time to 8 am, or sleep from 00 to 5am, adding more time each week? Thank you for your chanel, it gives hope

That's a great channel to cheer up some people with mild sleeping problems like this young lady who apparently slept well most of her lifetime. Some interesting insights, but sadly nothing for me, someone with severe insomnia. Still thanks KZbin for the recommendation

@@thesleepcoachschool8192 when you get prescribed a benzo AND Ssri it's not a mild case.. Ativan is one serious med, very serious .yes Dr should be held accountable, They take a oath DO NO HARM , YOU DONT FULL UNDERSTAND, LEARN !!!!! ASAP, NO EXCUSES IT GOES WITH THE JOB, GET EDUCATED YOU ARE DEALING WITH PEOPLES LIVES.. ya won't take the time to learn, then get out if the profession .. Sorry Daniel, tired of the excuses made for these Docs

@@thesleepcoachschool8192 I understand that it's tough being a Dr real tough it also hell going through benzo wd because of some Dr ignorance, Have you seen the stories on youtube, the frustration from 1000s and 1000s of people whose l8ves have been destroyed. WHAT DO WE SAY TO THEM, OOO THE Dr is under so much administrative pressure Really thatscwhat we say to the 1000s of patients who's lives have been destroyed

I respect the great work you are doing Ya being political correct in your reply , I understand, but one who has been seriously damaged by the medical system, it is just tough to agree..Do NO Harm ....Sir you take a oath. With that comes much responsibility

@LouellaMagtajas hi Louella! I’d say I can’t recall a single person who didn’t worry daytime! In fact, this is why I say insomnia isn’t a sleep issue, it’s a surface manifestation of us being anxious

Hi Coach Danielle- mine is an onset insomnia. I could not at fall asleep,even nap. I resorted to medication after 5 nights of not sleeping. Now I am on one month mark of switching to 3 different meds (which only gave me 3 hrs of sleep). I am conflicted if I should just go away with the meds or should i ask for another one to try. I am honestly exhausted and I don't know if I'll be able to handle another 5 sleeples nights (0 sleep) if I get off from the meds. I think that really traumatized me and I just have a lot of fears. Pls enlighten me on what's the good course of action. Thanks!

Hi Louella, Sorry it’s been a struggle but glad you’re here. Education, like knowing there’s no principal difference between trouble falling asleep in the evening or later on, it makes all the difference. @@thesleepcoachschool8192 Hi Coach Daniel, just couple of days ago, I started to feel that my body starts to get cold and it feels like it's somehwat shaking/trembling. it happens for a few seconds but happens multiple times while i am about to sleep. are those symptomps of hyper arousal? I also have palpitations too.

@@LouellaMagtajas hi Louella, Have you hear the expression “trembled with fear” or “sent chills down my spine”? They show how we actually know what fear can be experienced like… and often just knowing that nothing is happening except us being frazzled can help so much

I did suspect exactly this, you had unsubscribed before the purchase went through! Which also explains why the daily modules and typing bar disappeared, the app was working as designed. So yes, nothing further needed!

Hi Rebeca: I still have pulsate and ringing tinnitus but it doesn't bother me. Michelle recommended the book Rock Steady (Healing Vertigo or Tinnitus with Neuroplasticity), and I've been making my way through it. The approach is similar to Sleep School but applied to tinnitus: learn to feel without judgement, accept, and the brain reduces the volume. Best to you!

@@sarahmattern8530 I also have tinnitus (going on 20 years now), usually, it doesn't bother me at all but it has recently. I'll check out both your recommendations. Sarah, your essay brought me so much comfort when I read it and your interview has too. I am slowly but surely making my way out of insomnia-land but getting my hyperarousal to calm down is proving quite tricky. My conscious mind knows I am safe and everything is ok, but my amygdala is just not convinced yet!! Hearing stories like yours gives me hope. Thank you so much for sharing.

Hello coach..even after i sleep for 5 6 hrs. Some nights next day I feel that I've not slept n giving Me fatigue bt I clearly know that I've slept. Is this a good sign? Is this the sign of hyperarousal fading?

Kind of normal I think. It was happening to me too. This has nothing to do with sleep. It's coming probably as a result of the Hyperarousal/worries/anxiety.

Hi, my name is Joshua DeLaCruz. I’m not sure if is related to my sleepless nights and I’m not sure if I have Fatel insomnia, or simply just paradox insomnia, but on Halloween, I ate an edible, and I was forcing myself to stay up because I was afraid to fall asleep because it was making me feel sleepy. Plus it was tripping me out. I was forcing myself to stay awake, not falling asleep, and I managed to stay awake with that edible for hours, eventually, I did go to sleep whenever it wore off but later, about a week later, I started waking up, scared and confused. Then I was good then the next day I wake up, scared and confused and then eventually it was to the point where I couldn’t fall asleep at all and I’ve been experiencing this till January. The 20th and keep asking myself. How am I still alive? It Hass to paradox insomnia but I’m not entirely sure because I was put on so many different meds like lorazepam and Xanax to put me to sleep and eventually stop working then I stopped taking it and just took a simple melatonin and now it’s to the point where I have sleep paralysis with just a melatonin throughout the day but I know I can’t take a nap or fall asleep during the day can you please tell me what going on?? plus in the beginning my anxiety was really really high and me feeling sleepy made my anxiety skyrocketed in the beginning now it’s starting to die down, but I’m still convinced that I’m not sleeping at all yet I am able to drive Talk and do things I did had panic attacks in the past during my anxiety I am scared to fall asleep. Could you please explain why this is happening to me because I never had anxiety or panic attacks in my life

I am doing fine but I do experience the lack of sleepy feeling and my anxiety has went down I still have a bit trouble falling asleep. I guess the question I’m trying to ask his current anxiety take away your sleepy feeling for months.

@@joswa4680 hey hi yes I’m doing better I am back to work and feeling a bit better the bright side is that I haven’t had a panic attack since I last post this message still having trouble falling asleep, but it’s not as bad I am able to function a little bit better and not as much of a hypochondriac thinking I had fatal insomnia it was that bad, but I’m starting to overcome it and be better form it I hope
