We check out 4 cool music room in this episode of Vinyl Dens, including an awkwardly-shaped second-floor "bonus room" turned into a top notch listening space. PLUS some KISS, of course!
Interested in having your music room featured on future episode of Vinyl Dens? Please send your submission to channel33rpm@gmail.com. Make sure to include 5 to 8 clear, well-lit photos of your space and gear, including long shots and close ups (horizontal pictures preferred). Also include a bit about yourself (name, age, where you live, how long you have been collecting) and information about your room (where in your home it is located, how you put it together, special considerations, cool features, etc) and your gear. I will do my best to get as many rooms as possible on future episodes; however, please note I do get more submissions than I have time to show. Thanks!

I have a few of those Akai reel-to-reel decks, some Tascam decks, and a Sony deck adding up to over a dozen reel-to-reel decks which I bought in the early 2000's for as little as $75 (not including shipping) in some cases and in the cases of those higher end Akai decks, about $300 each (but they had belt issues that need to be repaired, but decks like those sell for $800 to $1,200 or more on eBay these days). Mind blown? Never mind that. Wallet blown. Hehe. :)

Personally I'm not a record collector as such, I just happen to have kept the records and CDs I like to listen to but am still buying 'new' ones, although I only buy what I want to add to my 'listen to' queue. Being an avid collector of other things I understand those who want ot collect records into their thousands, no problem with that and much respect to those people, just not for me.

Love the “Vinyl Dens” episodes. Keep showing them. I may enter mine, but it is a Home theater and 2 channel combined. I do separate the 2 Channel from the AVR, though via a separate stereo preamp. I have my albums filed in order as they are listed on Discogs (alphabetical) where I have everything entered. I am in the process of confirming the exact copies of the albums I own by the runout groove etchings.

Great video thanks Frank. To answer the question: I store my collection of about 300 records alphabetically by Artist last name Or... by Band Name, just as one would find in a record store. So when I want to play something in particular I know Right where to go. Although I would probably know where to look regardless. It’s more for company when they’re flipping through to find something they’d like me to play for them. Thanks

The guy Chris with the KISS collection is about the same age as my brother. So that explains KISS and the 8-track collection. They were the popular way to listen in the car. Cassettes replaced them in the early eighties when I was in high school. As far as sorting my collection, it's alphabetical and then order of release. Only separated into rock, country, various and soundtracks. No dividers needed.

to answer the question , i store my collection in alphabetical AND chronological (including Reissues) order ... by example , i have Black Sabbath - Paranoid (first press and 3 reissues) ... so, the order will be : First Press (early 1971) -- 2nd issue (late 1971) -- reissue from 1972-73 and finally the 2010 reissue , and then we go to Master Of Reality , Vol 4 , and etcetera ...

7:45 Generally speaking, I organize my record collection first by genre and then alphabetically by composer, artist, or band, although in the case of my soundtrack collection, I list the most prominent composers alphabetically, but in other cases, I organize soundtracks by movie title if those are more memorable than the names of the composers (I should probably just organize all soundtracks by movie title, but it is fun to see how prolific John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, Ennio Morricone, John Barry, etc. were over so many decades, so they get special attention in my IKEA Kallax shelves). Generally for ragtime, jazz, swing, lounge, exotica/Tiki, bossa nova, surf music, classic rock, classical music, opera, world music, country music, Christmas music, Halloween music, children's records, spoken word, etc, I organize them alphabetically by artist once again or by title again if the artist's name really won't ring any bells when trying to find a specific record. :)

Hey Frank, there are a couple record labels that still release music on reel to reel tape. Not very common but it still happens. Unfortunately the only label I can think of right off the top of my head is TPOS...located in Connecticut I believe. They do mostly punk & art rock/off the wall weird stuff. I'll post the others if I can remember them.

YOu know I love it when my duo is out to play. Hey Sheri, j'adore baby. Good greek music!!! Yes!!! OMFG this guy has such epic reel to reels. Babe, reel to reel is the most expensive way to listen to music. But its THE most analog way to consume the music. Its the best. New reel to reel tape is like $400. Its not cheap. Can you imagine having to pay like a few hundred bucks per album? Brutal. Thats why vinyl surpassed reel tor reel. Those coloured metal reels are amazing. Its way more for the more financially stable audiophile. ''AHHH Frank you would be in Heaven!!!! Look at that!'' - Sheri 2020. OMG awesome 8 track collection!!! TooDaLoo!

Hi Frank and Sheri, a massive thank you for featuring my humble abode and to answer your comment there's no reverboration. The soft furmishings, rugs and speaker placement have taken care of that. As I mentioned in my mail to you all my system apart from the P3 is vintage late 80's and I just love what it brings in sound quality. PS the leather suite style is called Winchester and I've owned it for over 30 years since new and still love it. Nothing better for me.

Totally agree! As for my 2x Techics Se A50; these are exceptionally well respected units and don't come onto the second-hand market too often. When they do the fetch excellent prices - much more than when new 30+ years ago. As it happens the SE A50 comprises two independently powered mono blocks inside so what I'm running are the KEF C95 driven by four mono-blocks and in this mode each SE A50 kicks out 350 watts. This is a massive difference and improvement over a single SE A50 running in stereo mode and driving the KEFs alone. I know that this type of set-up may not be to everyone's taste and I can understand why some say it's not necessary, but it 100% does make a difference and a very good one.

@@keithwood4031 Glad to know there are others in the world that think bi-amping/monoblocking makes a difference. I'm looking forward to the day I upgrade my speakers. Currently have a pair of Monitor Audio Silver RX8's which are 4 ohm units. I have a pair of Parasound A23 amps that can be monoblocked to produce 400 watts. Gotta have 7 ohm speakers to do it tho. Looking at a pair of Paradigm Prestige 85's.

hey frank and sheri...i have never alphabetized my record collection, even when i had over 9000 albums...i always sorted them by genre...metal..rock..jazz..classical..etc...and within the genre i would always make sure to put'related stuff' together..(deep purple/rainbow/whitesnake/sabbath/dio/etc...)...i read alot of liner notes, so i would be a bit anal sometimes (case in point...huey lewis and the news next to thin lizzy, because he played harmonica on some of their albums...)...beside all that...reel-to-reel players are pretty cool and sound pretty good...i use to have one...still have some reels of my band 'black widow' on them...both columbia house and rca music clubs even had the option of record/cassette/or reel-to-reel..that's how popular they were back in the day...still have my eight-tracks and player as well...peace and love to you both...rocky

Reel to reel: no to no. NO repair available, media unobtanium. Pretty to look at but extremely high maintenance, just like Sheri.
@MrAustrokiwi
@MrAustrokiwi 3 жыл бұрын
I will add just a bit of nuance to your comment. Except for the heads( Crucial components) everything on reel to reels is repairable. The heads are the issue, and that is why some of us go for Akai reel to reel decks. They were not the best decks, but the heads are the most indestructible, being a glass-ferrite composite. The experience of sitting with a drink listening to good tape recordings while watching a pair of ten inch reels revolve is an aesthetic notch up on a spinning record( which is good). The media is obtainable but expensive; as it always was. There are even new tape recordings being produced. For me the aesthetics trumped everything else. I do agree they are high maintenance.
