Nail biting is now considered to be an OCD issue. Therapy could help. My GF also bites her nails and even after wearing acrylic nails non-stop for decades the minute covid shut down all of the nail salons she went right back to biting her nails. I feel for people who bite. I've been fortunate to not have that problem. I have loads of other problems 😬, just not that one.

I feel like it depends on the person, but this was helpful to see how for some people, soft gel tips just aren't enough of a deterrent for nail biting. I'm so glad I stopped biting my nails when I was a teenager. I still pick at my cuticles though, so i do a manicure every week to try to combat that.

Hi Anastasia that gel polish 😍 I'm sorry they didn't work for Anna but it's great she let's you experiment on her...I'm a long-time nail biter but my cuticles are not damaged so I'm lucky...my nail tech used to use polygel on me but she's retired (due to muscle, tendinitis issue's)...I now do soft gel tip's on myself though I'm really going to be more careful from now on when removing my full cover tip's...my nail bed's were rather damaged...thank you for sharing xo 💜💅💜

For those who can't get to a nail tech you can do polygel nails with dual forms pretty easily at home. Just need polygel, dual forms, hand file, rubbing alcohol and a lamp. You can use a makeup brush you don't care too much about either. It's not the most professional but it should be enough to keep you from biting until you get to the nail tech. I say polygel bc it dries pretty hard so you'll have to have iron for teeth if you're gonna chew through that. Then a top gel will help the polygel not get discolored. You could also use some of that bitter nail polish for extra measure bc why not. To not chew the skin I'd suggest scented hand cream if you can use it, the perfume in the cream will make you not want to chew it. Picking is more of a matter of breaking the habit and training to not do it. As someone else also mentioned it would be good to talk to a mental health expert since nail biting and picking can be considered ocd behaviour but it can also be a sign of other conditions where the biting and picking is a tick, like biting your lips and such. Ofc trying to reduce stress and keeping your hands occupied with something else can also help.

As a compulsive nail biter/ picker I appreciate videos like this. I had been getting acrylics done for over a year but then I picked the side of one nail and I knew that if I went back for another appointment the tech would make a huge deal about it. I tried really hard but now 3 weeks later they are as short as they were before I started. I’m going to try soft tips at home to see if I can get everything back to normal. We will see.

...fake nails break/chip all the time, you don't have to tell the tech that *you* did it. Also she's not going to make a huge deal?? You're the customer lmao. If she makes you uncomfortable then go find a new tech but I have never met one who got mad at me for coming in with a broken manicure.

When I was little I was biting my nails so hard but I couldn’t really stop. I’m anxiety ridden person in general since I was born and usually rocking back & forth was soothing (the reason why swings are a thing I can keep doing all day long) and once I couldn’t have that it was the nails. Back in middle school I noticed something like nail extensions and one friend had been going to a beauty school to learn acrylic extension service and offered me to have some (her mom had a salon) but I didn’t have any money but ever since then a seed was in and the grower kept growing for the following decade. And I did manage to grow my nails some (unfortunately when the polish doesn’t hold on it’s quite hard to stay from picking on it and I kept wishing for a nail polish that would stay on for long time) but they never stayed long for much. And then around 2016 I saw a starter kit for gel polish at my local store and my decade old seed was grown enough to bloom flowers. And then following year was spent experimenting and exploring the nail world and extensions (it’s incredibly expensive and at that time impossible to get any products for non professional people, I wished for the school but that turned out impossible for many reasons so self-taught was the deal) and that’s when I came to realize my nail biting wasn’t present at all. It’s been 8 years now since I started with nail extensions and gel polish and biting my nails isn’t a thing anymore however I still do pick at the skin which may be an issue occasionally but it’s something I can control some. But while I probably don’t have the best natural nails from few wrongdoings in my learning process I can say that over time the lifting has improved and now I can keep on the full tips for super long time in comparison and after long research I also discovered for my nails occasional acid primer has changed the adhesive game. I do like this full cover tips use with gel instead of glue (I started to have some green spots from glue so I stopped and started to try adherence with gel) and that has been the greatest revelation. It was so great when pandemic opened the door for professional products to be more available for those without license. One thing I do that probably isn’t necessary is that I add a layer of building gel or builder-base gel over the tip before color/design, it gives me more confidence and adds to the strength of the tip (which isn’t too bendy to begin with so maybe those are not particularly soft tips however they’re quite thick for apex area which I don’t mind) So out of all techniques for extensions that I’ve tried (acrylics, forms, various tips, gels, fiberglass etc) I have to say since experimenting with transparent press-ons (the one thing my nails won’t do is the sticky pad press-ons cause the sticky pad would roll off my nails no matter what) I finally found an extension type that works and now year later I discovered (by giving it a second attempt) that dual forms also work just with more practice I would figure out the amount of get necessary and with a better e-file I can file excess gel off easier too. Anyway apologies for this long story, I just tried to tell nail biter pov and how long this journey has been and that while it’s probably not resolved completely the biting itself has not on the nails themselves which is a good thing in comparison to 18 years ago when it was a real issue. And ever since a layer of gel/acrylic touched my nail I never went back to biting (which is something I find curious when other people can bite through extensions cause the moment something is on my nails I can’t touch them anymore and that part is over) It’s been an interesting experience and a long journey but nonetheless fun and full of experimenting and discovery. And whoever came up with all this I’m just happy I got to fulfill my dreams that I had when I was a kid/teen and I hope for more dreams to come true

The soft gel tips look beautiful on Anna’s nails. I used to bite my nails, but thank goodness I eventually just stopped with the help of artificial nails. It’s very hard because it is a coping mechanism for stress and other issues.

I sympathize...I am not a biter but have had a habit since childhood of picking at the eponychium on both my thumbs...this deformed my nails so that I have to wear artificials to make my thumbnails look normal and have strength. Many people don't realize artificial nails aren't always just for fun, they are sometimes needed to protect and conceal problems nail polish alone cannot do. : ) The artificials have also helped me decrease my picking habit.

I didn't think they were too wide but I'm not surprised that they didn't last. Soft gel tips are just too soft to stand up to biting. However they're great at stopping me from picking at the corners of my thumbs which I do when stressed. It changes the feeling and just isn't as relaxing, I can't really explain it. 😅

At the beginning of this year, I decided to file off my extensions with my e file. For some reason, on my right thumb nail, my attention wandered and I filed a hole right through to the nail bed near the cuticle. I thought a piece of acrylic had lifted, so I pulled it and a part of the nail ripped right under the proximal fold to the nail matrix.oh the pain!! What was I thinking?? I cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol and then covered it with a plaster. Once the nail bed dried out completely, I protected it with plasters for a few months, checking regularly. I thought I would have permanent damage. Amazingly, the hole has now grown through and has just 3 more millimetres and it will be completely grown out. I still can't believe that I did it. And yes, I'm experienced with an e file, so it shouldn't have happened.

Ouch!!! I can't imagine the pain. I start to feel a heat spike if I stay in a spot for too long. I typically start removal with a carbide corncob bit, then move to a less abrasive ceramic, and then to a diamond-head cone to get the last remnants, or I will just get it thin enough to melt the last bits off with an acetone-saturated cotton ball. Glad you are on the mend!!!

When I do this, I use builder gel/rubber base gel on top of the soft gel tips for the color instead of just a regular gel color. That reinforces the tips, especially since my nails are very short (I don't bite, but as I've gotten older, my natural nails have gotten weaker, so break at the base often.

Thank you for this series... I thought it was me thinking that soft gel tips make my fingers flare out- I have tiny, short and skinny nail beds like Anna. It's not really noticable to others, but I notice, so I don't use soft gel tips very often (even in the extra short sizes for my tiny, shirt, skinny nail beds have to be filed). I think Anna nails are lovely.

I would love to see a video for people who are allergic to gel. I can't use builder gel or gel polish... and I think it is because I was over exposed to it when I was learing how to do my nails. I struggled to get builder gel to not crack... I have VERY thin, bendable nails. I'd love to hear your insight on allergic reactions. And if it is possible to reverse allergies.. because I love the look of the holo/unicorn powders, but they only work on gel polish.

I used to bite my nails. Ever since I had teeth 😂😂😂. I’m 52 yrs old now and I was able to stop biting due to nail extensions. I first started with acrylic nails. They popped off faster then they were put on. So gel extensions. Took me hrs to do. Then came the gel acrylic method. Layer gel, dip in acrylic and so on. Then it was polygel. Worked well, but also took hrs to do. Now I do the full cover nails with special glue gel. They stay on for like 3 wks and then they will start to get loose. Now it takes me about an hr to do. 😊😊😊😊

I like them, a real picker picks all, I even bite off acrylic nails😅. I do have a question: my free nail tip grow upwards on the side and doen in the middle. If you face the free edge the sort of a weak M-shape. How do I fix the gab between geltip and natural nail. I saw the video of the nail growing down, but this is a bit different. I just don't stem to be capable of making them without a gab underneath or a geltip that is lifting on the corners . ❤
@karimcdonald7670
@karimcdonald7670 7 ай бұрын
I’m wondering if you used a rubber base or even a layer of soft gel on your natural nails in place of regular base coat before gel tips, just to lessen the gap…just a thought. Also, some soft gels (Apres!) come “pre-sculpted” with a much harsher curve to them, and others (I believe they’re called “natural” fit?) come with less curve and seem to fit the “flatter”nails, leaving little to no gap. Anyway, I personally would just try to fill the gaps with a bit thicker application of rubber base or gel in those areas. I am curious to know if others use a different technique to combat this issue…

Strangely, I used to bite my nails CONSTANTLY!! And the skin around my nails. I’d make myself bleed. Then I changed my diet (vegan gluten free low glycemic) read a book by Nathaniel Branden on self esteem & integrity (it was a great comfort- eye opening & I became more self aware) I haven’t bitten my nails in years! I had self esteem but I was in very stressful situations often due to having undiagnosed illnesses- hEDS & MCAS which was the reason I changed my diet… finally figuring out exactly why I had been so sick for so long! My body couldn’t handle many foods, chemicals, medications etc. they caused my immune system to attack my connective tissues, nerves, brain, etc my nails didn’t grow right so I kept biting them EVERYTIME I got stressed out or when they had any kind of flaw in them. It was unconscious so I trained myself to begin to start living consciously. Everything takes practice! When you notice you’re biting, distract yourself w/something like chewing gum, fidget toys, etc & it does help to put on fake nails as they’re not as satisfying & they taste bad lol just keep practicing!! 🥰♥️😍☀️💅

That’s in 2010. I started doing my own natural nails and they’re too pretty to bite. I also started taking anti anxiety meds. I recently switched from gel polish manicures to acrylic overlays. I would like to try polygel with duoforms. I wouldn’t try hard gel.

@radmilaciric7946
@radmilaciric7946 7 ай бұрын
Soak off is good option for complete removal when client doesn't want to wear nails anymore but when you do a fill you don't need to remove all the material, just top and color. (first layer). And soaking off every month is very bad option even it's popular cuz aceton dries the entire nail plate every time and makes nails thinner, e filing is much better way. Maybe i have some mistakes, i'm not a native. 😄

@Nailcou - I am saddened by the title of the video and the premise that softgels are somehow weak or bad. I am not a nail biter, but I can tell you softgels are INCREDIBLY durable compared to the old plastic nails I used to use. When you add several layers of gel polish to them, they are very hard, and would not be comfortable to bite on. So I wanted to say this in case anyone thinks they are flimsy. Unless you are using old-style plastic nails, softgel nails are very, very strong. If they bend easily, they are not softgels! I never have any lift with them either, using Loctite superglue. I like your cuticle care and have learned a lot from watching you, but I have some comments also about acrylics, polygel, gel polish, and allergies. I strongly suggest you use nail forms for acrylic rather than building "on air" to limit the client's exposure to wet acrylic as much as possible. I disagree that allergic reactions are rare; the more you are exposed, the MORE likely you are to develop an allergy, and not the reverse. My allergy to acrylic became worse and worse after about 10 years until I had incredibly painful allergic neuritis (Google it if you want to learn more -- it is severe nerve pain in response to an allergic reaction). I realized I could no longer use it, and then I switched to polygel and quickly developed an allergy to it and gel polish as well. If I come in contact with it while wet, it will set off an allergic reaction that does not stop until all my nails are removed COMPLETELY and my hands calm down after a few days. The only way around my allergies was for me to paint a set of softgel nails, cure them on nail stands (this also has the benefit of reducing my UV exposure), and then use Loctite Super Glue Gel Control (please note, the "gel" here only refers to the consistency of the glue, which is NOT UV-cured, but dries by air) to glue them on. Softgel full-coverage tips have been my salvation since I cannot have any wet gel polish, polygel or acrylic touch my skin without my whole hands becoming swollen, itchy and inflamed, and it does not stop, even though I take Benadryl, Allegra, Zyrtec and Singulair. Any superglue that squeezes out can be wiped off with acetone, since a quick wipe will not harm the cured gel, and this has worked well for me. If you are allergic to acrylic and gel, softgel full coverage tips are a must!
