I bought something similar in StarCraft 2 called a "War Chest", which was a skin pack with the proceeds going to SC2 eSports. To unlock the skins you'd have to play the game, gaining XP, and every 'level' you'd get a new skin. The potential skins are time-gated though so you can't do it all at once, you have to wait for the skins to become unlockable in phases. I bought one and excitedly played to unlock everything because I thought it was just a glorified and interactive skin pack. The game kept connecting me to Singapore for some reason though no matter what I did to try to prevent it so I took a break and decided to play something else for a while. I came back a bit later and couldn't find the War Chest on my profile at all, and the skins were listed in a ~$45 bundle on the marketplace. So I messaged Blizzard support asking for a workaround or for the rest of the skins to be added to my account and they told me that when you buy a War Chest you're not actually buying anything. You're just buying the opportunity to unlock skins, and if you don't unlock them in time then the opportunity goes away. I was flabbergasted. Maybe they said that in the initial purchase but even if they had said it in bright red letters I probably still wouldn't have comprehended that anyone could do something so scummy. I asked for a refund and for the existing skins to be removed from my account but they said that you can only get refunds within 72 hours... for a ticket to what's apparently a months-long event, and for something I had hardly used. What a fucking joke! Some people might call me an idiot for buying something without understanding the terms and conditions but I've seen quite a few other people who made the same mistake. So thanks Blizzard, people asked for skins for years and you couldn't add them because of "minimum system requirements", and then when you do you find new ways to scam people out of their money. I've spent many hundreds of dollars on SC and SC2 since release, including going to their eSport events and buying merchandise, but it's good to see that it's never quite *enough* money.

Sherman, I don't think you've spent enough time around programmers to understand what Mi Ke is saying. Programming is a ridiculously complicated field. I lived with two of them for about two years and they never stopped tearing their hair out at the code for their projects. See, the thing about programming is that you can never fully know if there are going to be problems until you run the thing. And even then, when a problem comes up, you don't know what's causing it. This is because all code is nothing but text to be interpreted by a machine in order to carry out a sequence of instructions.You are actually telling the computer "Do this," in a completely different language, and hoping it does it, but then sometimes it doesn't do it, and you don't understand which part of "Do this" it didn't understand, so you have to comb through it, finding potential problems and changing things until it works, except sometimes changing it creates MORE problems that you don't understand, and the whole process starts again before you even fixed the first problem. It's unbelievably difficult to work with. Also, there is ZERO way for you to account for how the code is going to run on the infinite possible computers with different hardware and software configurations that could also play a part in buggering up your code, so you often have to find a way to figure out a solution to a problem that doesn't even exist on your own system. I mean, I once had a computer that installed my Nvidia drivers in one location, but glitched out and searched for the drivers in a completely different location, thereby meaning it could never update my drivers, because it couldn't find them until my programmer friends figured that out after hours of examination. How the Hell was Nvidia supposed to know that was going to happen? You can't blame them for that. So please understand that Mi Ke is speaking from the perspective of someone who has to get a game running using nothing but text written in a coding language. That's it. The hundreds of hours of content in modern games all boils down to text. And somewhere in those hundreds of thousands to sometimes millions of lines of text is the source of the bug, and you have no idea where it is. How do you even begin searching for that? I'd say that the months it takes to fix these kinds of problems are mostly spent finding the source of the problem rather than actually fixing it, so be a bit more sympathetic. It is not an easy job. I'm a goddamn English major and I could understand that from observation alone. What's your excuse?

There is a card/board game shop only a couple of minutes away from my house, and it has some of the best pro-consumer business practices I've ever seen! Here are a couple of said practices: 1) There are two separate stocks of board games, one that you can purchase, and another that you can't. While you can't buy the latter, you can play them for free. At any time, with any friends and/or employees, you can sit down and play one of these free games in the store without spending a penny. This collection of games is far more diverse, and contains games that can be bought in the first collection, essentially creating a sort of free trial system. 2) Every available snack that they sell on the side costs only $1. This is both simpler, and cheaper than other stores. 3) Selling loose non-rare trading cards for literal pennies, and individual rare trading cards for their appropriate value. 4) Costantly offering discounts and bonuses for their customers, all while providing them with as much information as possible. So, say, displaying how much one would save on a quantity discount, or participation in local tournaments contributing to store credit, etc. The point is, they do this, and make a crap ton of money because they ensure that their customers don't feel cheated and stop coming back. Quite the opposite, they have a huge and loyal consumer base and manage to turn a profit. Absolutely no idea how or if AAA companies would implement these kinds of practices, but it's nice to fantasize.
@davidcolby1676 жыл бұрын
Part of the problem is that a small store isn't a corporation. Corporations like...are legally REQUIRED to make a larger profit for their shareholders. They can't just make a profit, they need to show growth or they can get sued. We need to change how we incorporate economic entities to fix these problems. ...basically, the way to fix the gaming industry and all other industries is to fix capitalism. Good luck!
@missivory_missraine6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a nice hobby store, but small business and big business play different games. Big businesses, and corporations have quotas to fill. Thus the need for a good profit margin. Look at mom, and pop stores like your hobby shop. They rely on businesses like WoTC, GW license (if they have AoS/40k), Paizo (pathfinder), and the many companies that make board games. Their profit margin is pretty tight, and reliant on their community alone. If their community doesn't like a certain addition then they HAVE to make a change or else shelf space is rotting.
@PaveMentman6 жыл бұрын
--- Yeah, I remember the boss / owner of the (not Gamestop-)video-game-store one time said me this : "Don't give discounts; give extras" So basically if a customer tried to haggle the price down even slightly, we simply tried to offer extra things with a slight (hidden) discount ( E.G. a customer wanted to buy game asked few euros off; we offered an accessory with few euros off if they purchased both in a bundle ). So basically we were doing bundles that nowadays (finally) are done in digital-video-game-stores also. We also had the mentality of wanting the customers shop more often with relatively low prices instead of having to have to pay till "bankrupt" and then never visit ever again. (( It helped that basically this video-game-store more or less was more of a (profitable) hobby of this owner since he was basically a salesman of everything from automobiles to boats and so on. Eventually he just turned his main job to be "realisation / actualisation of assets", which most of the times meant that he bought bankruptcy estates and then sold forward the assets. )) This really cannot be say most of the "micropayment"-stores majority of the (maybe-a-little-overbown-)games have (as in reality they're "macropayments" that objectively want more money for less content in comparison especially to their predecessors)... --- --- ---

@IAMUtubeSockPuppet6 жыл бұрын
Pretty much what SotheX said. Sure you can pay for it all with in-game gold, if you're already wealthy and high level enough to afford the price of bonds (ever increasing because of inflation and additional monetization methods using them). New players? People who can't make $8 mil a week just to keep membership, or who don't want to use a lot of their playtime to do it? They're probably going to pay up the $$$. And remember, just because you make 100's of mils a day on a near max character, doesn't mean a fresh FtPer looking to go members is going to be able to do it. And no, I'm not in that group. I earned 4-8 mil/hour easily doing Runecraft of all things, and could make similar or better money doing PvE, but I couldn't keep up even the 2-4 hours it would take to buy a bond because it made playing feel like a chore instead of something I WANTED to do. But the constant flashing and marketing of microtransactions to my face wore on my psyche and flat out made the game less fun. Not to mention I'm definitely in the camp that thinks the quality of other updates has greatly suffered in the face of so much effort being poured into microtransactions. And even if you make money for nothing by playing the market, you're not buying microtransactions ex-nihilo with your in-game GP. You have to buy a bond that ultimately WAS bought with real world money. Even if you never give Jagex a single real world dollar, you're still playing into their monetization scheme.

I liked it a lot in Dota 2, primarily because Valve were transparent about why they started the practice: to help fund the increase in size of the game's yearly International tournaments. As the practice expanded, they started adding stretch goals, things they'd do if they reached certain thresholds, and 25% of all the money that was spent on their battle went straight into the tournament prize pool. Turns out, people are pretty damn willing to throw money at a company when they know for a fact that that money's being put right back into the community.

Smite is reason why i stopped buying anything from hirez games ever. I just got scammed from the loot boxes by getting the skin i wanted in last one, essentially spending many times more than i wanted.

Wow I didn't know Rocket League was doing this too. I haven't played it in almost a year so I had no idea about the rocket pass or the loot boxes. The already had good and fairly priced DLC or it was when I last played so why do this? What a shame. Rocket League is a good and successful indie game and now it has fallen to the dark side. There's no way I'm coming back to it now.

Rocket league doesn't have a rocket pass YET but if they implement it its over for me
@moviemanreviews55776 жыл бұрын
avirx8 No they fell to the darkside the minute they implemented loot boxes. I still play and enjoy the game a lot but I hate that it has loot boxes and it's just indefensible really. I just don't get ppl who LOVE OW and bc of that they feel they have to defend the dumb loot boxes. That's just silly. It's possible to love the fun game but hate the slimy loot box scheme. Idk why that kind of nuance is beyond so many OW fans. Also I haven't noticed the Rocket Pass and I just played the game yesterday. So it doesn't seem to have been implemented yet. But if and when it does I might just stop playing it all together. Loot boxes are already inexcusable and then for them to be putting more crap business practices. Forget it. Psyonix would be beyond saving.
@thrpotatoasfgfejfidieiidkr70716 жыл бұрын
I'm ok with the loot boxes because I just trade them, you can get hella cool items just by trading the crates you get.
@Avirx6 жыл бұрын
@ZTV Gaming OK I didn't know you could trade. I haven't played Rocket League in a long time. I guess the trading sort of makes it OK. I still don't like it though. They could've easily allowed people to purchase the cosmetic items directly. There was no good reason to use loot boxes at least not a consumer friendly one.
@moviemanreviews55776 жыл бұрын
avirx8 Exactly! Loot boxes are inexcusable and indefensible. Period. I trade the crates too but the loot box system should never have even been in the game to begin with. It sucks bc the game itself is awesome. Stupid greedy business practices ruining good stuff again...

I haven't played any game yet that uses a "battle pass" but Halo MCC is adopting some of the ideas in it for their armor unlocks. Seasons introducing new cosmetics, but that's about where it ends. The seasonal items don't vanish and you can always unlock armor from a previous season, and you don't need to buy anything to get access to anything. Just the $10 price for each main Halo campaign and multiplayer, with $5 for ODST's campaign, and each game can be purchased a la carte. Of course, the PC release isn't out yet, so we'll see.

The battle passes, the good ones anyway, also sweat out enough currency to make it so you don't have to buy the next one. Nobody Special Nah, back in the day each gamemode had a ridiculous amount of tweaks. One of them was an option for no-respawns. Nowadays we don't get that level of customization which has allowed companies to say "Look at this exciting gamemode/game" when all they did was take a pre-existing one and change a few things. Hell, they're making entire GAMES out of slightly changed gamemodes. That's my problem with games in the BR genre.

As a Paladin's player I agree that HiRez do go overboard with the monetization. But don't let that scare you away from the game. Like Jim said the core game is fun and you don't have to pay a cent if you don't want to. There are no P2W mechanics. I've been playing for almost a year and I haven't spent a dime. If anyone is interested in the game and have questions feel free to ask me on Reddit. I'm Paladin51394 (I made my username before I even started playing Paladin's it was just a coincidence)
@JimSterling6 жыл бұрын
Paladins' monetization is just frustrating more than anything. When I discover genuinely good F2P games, I *want* to give 'em money, but if their monetization is as absurd as Paladins', it completely shuts down my desire to buy into their model.
@Gen0Granger096 жыл бұрын
I *kinda* agree and i *kinda* don't at the same time. I mean, in terms of gameplay only, you just buy the Champions pack and be done with everything. The lootboxes don't give duplicates, which is really nice. I don't think their monetisation model is absurd per say, just that it's a giant convoluted mess that needs to get cleaned up to prevent choice paralysis.
@chuckbatman56 жыл бұрын
I think Paladins core gameplay is a lot of fun, I actually like it better than the very similar Overwatch. However the convoluted unlock systems and rewards systems very quickly made me stop playing the game, and I'm not about to just pay for the big package holding all the content because then it'll be like PUBG and Overwatch where I paid for something I never play

I, too, wanted to give Hi-Rez some money for the time I've spent & enjoyed in Paladins (about 100 hours now) so I bought one of their weekly(?) deals they show above the login rewards on the shop screen. They're incredibly difficult to buy. Seems they won't do anything on a Mac & you need the Steam overlay open on PC to make them do anything, but in the end I managed to give them my money in exchange for them giving me some fun. If that was a simpler process & I didn't have to download the game all over again on another platform to do it, I'd probably have done it after 20 hours gameplay instead of 100. Madness.

The first game I remember having a battle pass type thing was smite, and this was awhile ago. At the start you would buy into the battle pass for like 800 gems and it would cover the full year and as you played you unlocked more and more stuff. It was a pretty good value especially if you played a lot. The Paladins Battle pass is just kind of a continuation of that but it seems more seasonal, which is what Smite does now too, but each season the cost is 400 gems and you also get a limited time skin with it too.

How you do events right in a free-to-play game: I'm currently playing the mobile game "Sailor Drops" (basically Sailor Moon mixed with "Candy Crush"). To access an event (be it a regular non-time restricted event or time-restricted event) you have to pay three keys which you can get in the main story levels by getting a pre-determined score. These keys are also used for unlocking further progress in the main story. Everything is free, so far. So I enter this time-restricted event where clearing two "worlds" out of five (9 levels each) mean you get a new character which is pretty powerful. Clear four and you can upgrade the character to level 5, the highest. The event lasted like a month I hink and though these games rely a lot on luck (do a shitty job 30 times, but somehow the 31 you clear everything with three stars) I got the character and cleared the fourth world without spending money. I just had patience (half an hour wait for a new life), but also got powerups from clearing levels in those worlds and people on the "friends" list sending me daily free lives just like I send them. And you can ask "friends" to help you unlock the aforementioned story progress that requires three keys. So, through community effort, non-dickish event requirements and time constraints you can play and enjoy this game. It makes me open this game more than any other, at the very least just to send some free lives to my "friends", because why not? It's nice to be kind.

jim have you heard of the bullshit that runescape is pulling? not only is there membership that went up in price recently but you have solomons store (something most players have little issue with as its mostly cosmetic overrides but you can also buy bank spaces that bits a bit uh... contentious?) treasure hunter where you buy keys (you can also get 1 key a day 2 with members and 3 with the yearly membership deal around christmas and for doing quests etc) with real money you open boxes you get a random thing - note used to be called the squeal (wheel) of fortune and quite literally said spin to win and now runepass it is essentially battlepass you buy runepass and if you do tasks you get cosmetics only issue with its adding more "dailyscape" and is quite literally broken for ironman accounts (accounts that cannot trade with players use the grand exchange or have anything to do with treasure hunter they can however buy runepass as its cosmetics but then one of the tasks is one ironman cannot do at all due to their restrictions) oh and they also added a thing where you can pay monthly to get double daily keys on treasure hunter this was implemented at the same time as runepass IIRC so runescape now has 3 monthly subscriptions (membership runepass and double daily keys) along with literal gambling and cosmetics

People don’t understand why people don’t mind the battle pass yet hate it in other games. Fortnite battle royale is completely free where, if you’re smart with the items you get within, you can just spend the 10 dollars once and have every future battle pass forever.
@Mr_jz_126 жыл бұрын
One of hte boys at work does that. Paid real money for the first pass, hasn't paid since, used v bucks made from playing to keep paying for the pass.
@moviemanreviews55776 жыл бұрын
Diavolo Then why implement the Battle Pass at all? Obviously Epic Games knows that a good portion of it's player base will NOT be able to do what you just said. (Nor should they. Players should be able to play any game anytime they damn well please and not feel FORCED to play just to try and get their money's worth) And it's banking on those players to milk more money out of them. It's just a a scam. A ridiculous and indefensible scam.
@diavolo13266 жыл бұрын
Movie Man Reviews well this free game does need to make its money. It’s not like it’s blocking off gameplay mechanics or pay to win. It’s just cosmetics. Not to mention that the free pass just gets better and better each season with back bling, axes, emotes all for free as long as you play. I don’t have an issue with a free game with good quality doing it. I have a problem with a game I already paid for charging just as much for stuff I don’t get to keep.
@300maks6 жыл бұрын
Diavolo and btw if you bought the pve mode then you dont even need to buy the battle pass, you earn vbucks in the pve mode
@moviemanreviews55776 жыл бұрын
Uncle Richie But it's a F2P game. FREE to play. Emphasis on the FREE. If it's a FREE to play game then why is it charging for PVE, save the world, battle pass, etc. at all!? You know why? Bc they want to have the F2P business model AND still charge players. It's BS. They are making more than enough off their MTX (you know the way all F2P games do) so there is NO EXCUSE to charge for anything else at all. It's BS but of course fans will excuse and defend it. Just as delusional as OW fans.

Though overwatch does deserve blame for popularizing loot boxes, they still do a decent job of keeping monetization restrained. At the loot boxes screen, there's just a small little button that says "store" and that's it. It isn't constantly trying to trick you like PUBG is, and it hasn't come out with a season pass system (yet). It's mostly just been adding to and tweaking the game with the goal of making it better--though whether or not it succeeds is hotly debated. They even recently came out with an "endorsement" system meant to reward stuff like sportsmanship and positive interaction. Again, whether or not they're succeeding is up for debate, but at least their focus is on building a game that is worth spending money on instead of finding new ways to squeeze blood out of rocks.

Hi-Rez, did a sort of BattlePass way before than Fortnite and its own Paladins, they called it Odyssey in Smite and other Ingame Events (there is quite a few per year)
@joecook33496 жыл бұрын
I'm really glad you took the time to shit on Hi Rez a little; I really dont feel like enough people do as far as their monetization practices are concerned. Paladins is really bad, but Smite is goddamn atrocious and Paladins is eventually going to get there. It really sucks because they're both fun games, but good God almighty do they have some of the worst monetization models for free to play games ever.

Fortnite's pass is how you do it right IMO. It's very clear what you can obtain before you buy, and if you do even marginal research on the topic you can even find estimates on how long it takes to unlock everything. Not to mention that you can level up the pass before buying it, as the free pass is 1 to 1 in level with the paid one. They also have a catch up mechanic in the challenges that means you can get the whole pass done if you've done some dailies before buying it, and just rush the challenges in the last few weeks. There are certainly cynical arguments to be made about it but I think it's done with good intention, and if you don't want to play the game to complete the pass, then just don't buy the pass, you know exactly what you miss out on in advance, unlike the whole lootbox shite. I personally have had no problem supporting Epic Games with my wallet and will continue to do so in future, as the business model, especially for a F2P game in 2018, is exceptionally fair and reasonable and has been since initial release. If there's one thing I want to call out though, it's early access. Fortnite doesn't deserve the EA flag, it is a feature rich game, with minimal to no bugs, which is fully monetized.

Friendly reminder (if its not in the video) Jagex, under pressure from their Chinese overlords, recently added Runepass and said "For a fortnight" you can have it. In RuneScape. A game that's already weighed down with a ton of microtransactions and an $11 sub fee for a vast majority of the content. When I quit in 2012 after the Evolution of Combat update, I never knew it'd get that bad.

really? holy fuck. i left because of a combination of the graphics update that came with EoC (god that looked ugly as sin, what moron thought it was a good idea) and the EoC itself (i could use that skill that makes the combat like old times but it still didn't fix what they did to the gear tiers, that is what made it unplayable), so i didn't realize they literally sold their souls. damn, i miss playing with Eek in my warlock gear
@Dr_Andracca6 жыл бұрын
What is absolutely sad to me is they actually fixed EoC by adding revolution mode where it was a nice mix of Oldschool Combat and EoC combat. I actually like RS3 more than OSRS in many ways, but I fucking hate their bullshit microtransactions they added to RS3. Here is hoping Jagex doesn't also fuck up OSRS.
@comyuse91036 жыл бұрын
i gave it a try after revolution mode, it only fixed the absolute surface of it. EoC still completely ruined the game by making tiers a hard, set thing and removing the use of just so much stuff. would you use a defender now? of course not (and that pisses me off even more since i just got a dragon defender when EoC came out)! I've found armor is totally useless as well, pure offense is the only thing that matter now. EoC also tanked frame rates for me for no reason, at first i thought my internet was even worse than my old dial-up when i tried, but other people have had the same problem. even worse, i don't want to go back to a shitty 2006 OSRS (where everyone seems to hate change just for the sake of hating change), i just want RS from before EoC fucked everything with a dev team that supports the game and at least pretends to care.

Event passes that offer the ability to buy levels are essentially a “pack” of cosmetics that you can get a discount on if you complete the challenges. For example, in PUBG’s case the total cost of all items if you just buy levels is 40 USD. If you complete challenges that can drop to 10 USD. As someone who enjoys playing PUBG but hates loot boxes, the ability to effectively directly purchase 4 outfits was very welcome.
