Join me on a wild camping escape via canoe on Loch Lomond, Scotland. Originally planning to hammock camp on a secluded island in the north part of the Loch, I was taken aback by the sheer amount of rubbish I encountered during my journey. The overwhelming level of litter, including cans, bottles, and even baby wipes with human excrement on them, was disheartening.
Despite my disappointment, I decided to make the best of the situation and picked up as much litter as possible. But the experience was eye-opening, and it made me understand why some oppose wild camping in the first place. I began to see the destructive force it can have when people are irresponsible and disrespectful to nature and the environment.
This was a touching and humbling experience that made me contemplate how we can make a difference. It's now more important than ever that we join forces to set an overpowering movement in motion. We need a new way of thinking and acting, where we all do our part to preserve and protect the environment. By inspiring one another, we can make a difference and set an example for others to follow.
Join me on this journey as I share my experience and explore how we can work together to protect our planet. Let's take action and help heal the earth.
I’d love to hear your comments - what do you think of this?

just watched you picking up rubbish at L. Lomond. Eze, you are the kind of hero the world needs. I could feel your pain, you were saying my thoughts, I felt as sick, & angry, as you. I don`t know what nationality you are, but please stay in Britain, we need you. I`m over 70 Eze, & I`ve started looking at canoes!

Alan, thank you for the kind words, they really mean a lot. I know you and I and many others are not alone, I hope we can inspire one another to make big changes, I'm optimistic that it will happen! Good on you looking at canoes, my plan is to keep canoeing well into my 70s. Stay childish as long as possible and would love to hear about your potential canoe move! I'm from Argentina but have been in the UK for 24 years now. Thanks for the support!

A lovely film, showing the beauty of nature, around an understandable bit of ranting. I really don't understand why people bother going to these places if they're going to leave litter, as clearly they don't appreciate the beauty. Its difficult not to let it upset you. A few people can start to make a difference. We clear one of my local rivers, and last year it was frustrating as every time I found new litter, but after a few paddles where we collected quite a bit, this year very little has come back, and it seems that people are maybe respecting it a bit more. Now my favourite bit of the Wey is pretty clean for a 2 miles section I look after. Not everybody is good, but it is better. Or maybe the idiots have just gone back to the pubs and shops this year... Thanks for sharing, keep enjoying nature and maybe the idiots will slowly be educated.

Mal, thank you for watching and commenting! EXACTLY! I don't understand how they bother getting out there given their lack of appreciation... It's like paying for an expensive wine but not liking the taste... (not sure about that one... anyway). Thanks for the compassion, it really helps! Thank you so much for cleaning the Wye, it is such a GORGEOUS river which I've paddled quite a few times and also have cleaned up on several occasions. That is WONDERFUL to hear that less rubbish is coming back and I think it's definitely that you are making a difference. It's not a coincidence. Also, the cleaner it is, the less people will pollute. Seeing pollution somehow "validates" polluting more. Like the incremental damage doesn't seem as bad I guess in people's mind. Thanks for sharing your experience and insights, ATB, Eze

Loch Lomond and the encompassing Trossachs National Park is very easily accessible from Glasgow by train and so during the summer you get quite a lot of young folks /non-outdoorsy people who just want to shack up and get pissed for a weekend and not think too much about it. To try to combat this they actually introduced a "wild camping by permit only" bylaw around Loch Lomond from March to October which can involve fines for those wild camping without a permit. Unfortunately it only seems to put off honest people.

He shouldn't have picked litter up and moved around islands, they don't want you doing that here as it spreads disease around the islands to some of the rare wildlife. This is out of season as they have litter parties in season and they know exactly how to deal with the waste. The problem is mostly the English they come here and ruin it for everyone else. I live here and have a boat on the water out of Balloch so it makes zero difference to me as all that will happen is more strict permits etc for those who aren't Scottish, they're already talking about banning Jetskis unless you are from here or have been registered at Duncan Mills for boats or other watercraft for a set amount of years. I can tell you stories of how I've saved kids lifes here, 4 to be exact, two in the same incident, and it was irresponsible English guys 16 to mid 20s on jetskis or smaller ribs who have either hit each other or hit something while drunk and out their faces on drugs at night on watercraft they only have about 10hr of experience on. I picked up a guy who's inflatable life jacket had ripped his ear off and a rib had came out his body, he hit his mate at 1130pm on a 300bhp jetski his dad got him only a few week prior for his birthday. His mate was unconscious but had a proper life jacket on so he got lucky and I pulled him onto an inflatable dingy, dragged him back to the bank as I didn't want to cause any further damage to his body, he was airlifted to hospital. Both made full recovery and thanked me later and bought me a new trolling outboard for my trouble. They both said the same "it's over in a flash, one minute youre drunk going 70mph, next yer in intensive care"

The place gets cleaned up properly all the time in season. Thanks for taking your litter with you but a kindly reminder not to drag litter between islands as it spreads disease. Ideally find the litter dump sites on each island (that sometimes looks like a random litter dump) and leave it there as It gets taken away from they spots. Youl know what I mean if you see one, they are often in plain site so the litter collection can see them.

Yes the Earth is crying Out ! Well done for cleaning up, I do the same down my local river. The east side of Loch Lomond became a no camping area, ( Legal Injunction needed ) because of the rubbish & abuse. Thankfully, there is now a permit system for "Responsible Wild Campers", but its a shame some people spoil these lovely wild places. Great quality, enjoyable videos. ATB

Great video, we appreciate the rant. As fellow lovers of the Scottish wilderness we need more people like you. We're looking forward to getting back out to camp in the next week or two and will be making a point of spending more time leaving our sites better than how we found them. At this point, 'leave no trace' doesn't seem enough, surely it needs to be 'leave it better than you found it'.

@@EzeAdventurer I know some guys from the Thetford River Group and every week they are out in canoes for a few days collecting rubbish, I met them on the water and asked if they ever get fed up with cleaning the same stretch, the answer was no, they actually get a positive vibe from it, the cleansing of the water is a therapy for them and they feel better for it. I would rather people didn’t litter the place but I can learn a lot from those guys and yourself.

Well done Eze. Powerful film and I feel your pain. The first time I took a canoe to a small island to camp was so exciting, I’d looked forward to it for months, only to be gutted when, as I paddled into a small bay where I was going to camp, I was greeted by a carpet of beer cans under the water and a full size bbq left on the beach! Why go to the lengths of travelling to a remote beautiful place only to ruin it for others. I had a full canoe on the journey back with other peoples waste and ignorance. Since then I’ve tidied entire tents, chairs, even boots! Championing the right attitude, just like you have done, is how we will win. Love your videos and despite the ignorance we witness everyday I look forward to getting my paddle back in the water, warm my toes by the fire and settle back under a star filled sky…

We have a field by the river in our village and the rubbish we find there is horrific. Babies nappies, human excrement as well as the usual beer cans, BBQ’s etc. Twice a year we do a voluntary clean up but as you say it is very depressing. Felicity! Wow thanks for sharing this with us - I can totally understand your sentiment... it really is depressing! Honestly I felt like a black cloud has just come over me... my body was so heavy and I had no pleasure or intent of doing anything else.., I thought "time to get some wood" but I just couldn't do it. I didn't realise how much of a toll it took on me until I was at camp (with it already set up!). I can imagine being right next the river the things you see.. It's a constant reminder of how pathetic the human race is.. (and I include myself in the equation because no doubt I'm part of the problem too...). We need to DIG DEEP for BIG CHANGE. We need to be brave, strong and determined to punch the status quo in the face, and ask for MUCH MORE. Well done for doing the clean ups, nobody can ever take away those good deeds from you Felicity.

Majority of us do LNT... and don't need or seek any plaudits for it.. its always just been the right thing to do.. no question. The frustrations arise from trying to find reason in others flagrant disregard for their surroundings, for nature and for others. The bag it up and pile it high types... are in some ways worse as the expectation from them is that others will sweep up behind them....but we all just keep on keeping on, either picking up or calling it out when we come across it.. I like the ' leave it better' mantra...when the leave no trace message is being discussed... Thanks for keeping on, keeping on and sharing this video... a new subsciber....👍

I live at Loch Lomond and litter is a huge problem. It's got a lot worse post Covid with more people staying in the UK for their holidays. The loch is so near to Glasgow and so it attracts boozing thugs who just leave all their mess behind. . Then you have the campervan brigade from down south dumping nappies in hedges and setting up camp right on the actual cycle paths on the west side of the loch. Proper wild campers like yourself are an asset to the area and to the wider Scottish countryside.

@@EzeAdventurer ah yeah, does make sense why it's such a mess. I think they put restrictions in between March and September which might deter people, hopefully it'll reduce the mess. I had a good time, it was a wet 3 days but great to get out in the kayak. I found myself a nice flat spot, encircled by young spruce and larch so it kept the worst of the wind out. I took a one man tent to sleep in, also had my tarp up in a ploughpoint for an admin area out of the rain 👍

@EzeAdventurer

Canoe over sit on top any day!!! Yeah definitely it's a lot more work but I really enjoy the "thrill" and creativeness of capturing it all at the same time. It's almost like it gives you something "more to do" as well when you're alone, and the camera kinda works as a bit of a companion in a weird way.. your audience "comes with you". The editing can definitely take a very long time, depending on your style, and degree of detail you want to edit down to.. you can make it more rough and can be done in a couple of hours, or you can try make it cinematic, music, volume control, transitions etc and it start getting more and more time consuming. But the editing is another creative opportunity for me and I do like spending hours on end editing. Hope this helps! You can try it and see how you go! Don't take it too seriously to begin with. If it enhances the experience, go with it. if it detracts, then drop it :-)

New to your channel Eze; could feel your frustration building as the video went on. I enjoyed the fact you cleared as you went - not what you set out to do on an adventure but honestly, well done for doing so. Out of interest, I see you have travelled a lot but is Scotland bad in comparison to other countries regarding the litter etc? Maybe parts of Scotland more so than other parts? I really do love the country but even travelling from A to B, the motorways, the slip-roads are so full of litter that I can’t understand it; similar to yourself on this occasion, it puts me off people who take things for granted.

Welcome aboard buddy! Appreciate you coming along for the ride and thanks for the encouragement. I think the litter problem is everywhere unfortunately.. Loch Lomond in particular I think is a really extreme example of SUCH beauty, SO close to SO many! 50% of the pop of Scotland is within 1 hour drive from L. Lomond! This explains. I think mostly try to get as remote as possible. Look on the map and think: Is this easy or difficult to access? Could it be accessed by foot or would you need a boat to get there This helps to determine locations ! Hope this helps mate

Unfortunately we are dealing with a mentality and attitude to life that certain individuals just believe this kind of thing is ok, even the norm, they wouldn't have even thought twice about doing it. Its a societal problem bred from a lack of education about the natural world and basic respect. Thank you for doing your best to clean it up.

I appreciate it, totally agree. Starts with education... perhaps even connecting kids to nature and it's beauty at an early age, so they can appreciate and protect it as they grow older

I am really enjoying your film making, very compelling viewing. It's a crying shame that we live in a world where some people just don't care about their conduct in this pristine environments and the impact that it has. I just wish they stay away from these places if they can't respect it. . or learn how to respect the outdoors and to not leave a trace. I feel sad too.

Totally agree with your rant. I would rant too. it's so sad when people disgrace mother earth with their trash. Something wrong with those who do that.

It's such a shame people think this is OK to do man... They come and ruin it for other people and why? Selfish and dragged up... Well done Eze great work. Sorry you didn't get to capture the area like it should be.. to be enjoyed.
