As a professional musician I happened to come across this video. I congratulate you on putting this into perspective. Everyone thinks they have to be great at what they are doing. Instead we should be enjoying what we do. I have been playing over 50 years and still learn something all the time. Trying to incorporate it can be frustrating at times but the challenge is fun

Hi Beatrix I visited your country (as a classical guitarist) many years ago and was impressed by the music education based on the teaching of Zoltan Kodaly. I feel you could explore some of the following topics in your quest for musical mastery: lifetimes quest: 1.Listen to music - all genres, historical periods and geography know your culture - the social context and musical vernacular 2. Entrainment - engage rhythmically (physical) with others 3.Develop physical skills - mechanics, control, stamina 4. Develop musical skills - literacy, aural, interpretation, historical practice 5. Develop musical knowledge - theory, etc 6. Create/curate your own musical identity - make your own compositions, arrangements and editions 7. Work with other musicians - duos, trios, ensembles, orchestras, singers, musicals, bands 8.Performance - Connect with your listeners 9.Share your knowledge - learn through explaining, teaching and demonstrating

Deep and very true. It's one of the beautiful things about being a musician. Everything you experience and do in life ultimately has an effect on your playing. There is the technical side of course which you have to learn. But technique is only a tool. With modern learning tools a 10 year old can have the technical skills of a master (and you can watch that on social media). But only a master can use his technical skills to express the loss of his great love through the instrument. And that what music is about in my opinion. I'm a professional musician and while my technical skills have developed some over the past few years I didn't make big steps at all. But I have gained a lot of confidence and I can stand in front of an audience, alone, be relaxed and feel/express the atmosphere of the song. That makes a huge difference in what comes across, even though my technique isn't any different. But my technical skills have become more integrated with my as a human being, they have become more of an extension of me. And that's huge and exactly the reason why "child prodigies" only ever impress me, but never make me feel anything beyond that.

Guitar is so difficult. But the sound is so nice that one becomes addicted to it despite all the pain it takes to play even the easiest piece. So indeed, one has to enjoy the suffering... specially in the tips of the fingers.

Spot on, and perhaps your most important vid so far. Very important to listen to what\how we play and to "feel" the music and enjoy it, as opposed to just "getting it right technically." Also, mix things up and don't get stuck: Tarrega, Bach, Barrios, Dyens, Linnemann, and DIsney are all good, and even learning a small portion of the piece or movement qualifies. Find something we like and make it our own. David Jaggs does this all the time on his channel. He calls it "My take on it." 😎

Yes, that is a good and helpful way of thinking and practicing any kind of musical instrument, or any other craft. Problem is that, no matter how hard some people try to make us focus on stuff like ear training, melody etc, we still want to play scales at 260 bpm!

Hi Beatrix. Thank you for all your wonderful videos. I've seen so much advice on many different things but haven't seen anything on pins and needles in ones foot on the footstool and in the plucking hand. I suppose on could buy a guitar support and that'll solve the foot problem but what about my right arm. No matter how I place my arm it feels funny after a while. Thank you.

I've been playing for about 8 years and just picked up a classical guitar. My right hand is very good with fingerpicking and rhythm, but after all this time, I still struggle with fretting hand accuracy and moving across strings. It is very frustrating and it makes it hard to build confidence in learning things. Any advice on how to get my left hand on the same page after all these years?

There’s definitely something to be learned here my friend. This was more about the mindset towards learning. I’ve applied these concepts in many different aspects of life and skills . Such as sports , weightlifting, martial arts, video games when I was playing competitively, foreign language, and yes finally the guitar. You can too brother (: !!!

I disagree with MrET1992. I found this quite valuable. My main takeaway was learning that “Technique is your toolbox that you use to make music.” As a self-taught flute player first, I always avoided technique books because I just wanted to play the songs. After sitting with the Fiesta Flutes for a couple of years, I discovered that there was value in practicing techniques if I wanted to really advance to playing beautifully in the higher octaves. If someone told me in my first year with Fiesta Flutes the technique was like a toolbox, I could have started to reach the higher register sooner. Granted that was more of a lightbulb on a reflection for my primary instrument, I can take the same attitude and apply it too the guitar now and find pleasure in playing with all the different tools.

Talk Talk Talk, many of us want to learn, but first HEAR ,, HEAR the lesson to be LEARNED to know if it is What WE LIKE to find FUN to LEARN , not listen and listen more and some MORE and still not know ,if it is better to go to one PLAYS tunes to let us know, We do not really want to know HISTORY , the instructors personal life... blah blah blah,, HUM maybe "AI " would do better to teach, not a lot of TALK TALK< with a few cords played., or stop as if the instructor never master the WHOLE thing, but just so far.
