Took some serious balls to turn down that capitulation job offer -- right at the brink. I'm still in awe of how close you got to throwing in the towel, and how it made so much sense to call it quits at that point, and how you waited until the 59th second of the 59th minute of the 11th hour to say -- "no!" Really inspiring, and I'm glad it worked out for you. I feel like I need to sign up for your 20 tracks in 20 days package just to show respect for your bravery.

@@BoundtoDivide SERIOUSLY. That's where everyone goes wrong, where everyone gives up. Personally I don't understand at all why people totally give up when they need to get a job, I've always just viewed the job as a way to support my music, even if its 40 hours a week, it's still my "second job." But it takes some serious cajones to say "no THIS is what I'm doing" when your e tire family is telling you you're wrong. I guess you showed them the truth. In reality, EVERY business operates at a loss for the first few years, even McDonalds (especially McDonalds) think about how much it costs to build one and start one, and consider how long they'll need to do good business to pay that off. The MOST successful businesses take a few years to get up & running, Netflix took a couple years I think to even become profitable. Look at them now, they're literally the kings of streaming, which is definitely the new standard model fro damn near everything. Good on you for standing up for yourself. This is a business just like any other, you go for it and put all you have into it and are prepared to make the necessary sacrifices, and you'll most likely make it. Only reason we as a community think it's hard to become a musician is because we've all heard a million stories of how people blew up famous out of nowhere. But it's never out of nowhere, it's after someone with resources to invest discovers them and decides it's a sound business decision to invest in this person, make a pro record and promote the shit out of it, and pay to get it played on every radio station (those huge companies usually own the stations, so it ain't hard for them) NO ONE just gets lucky. They work their ass off. So thanks for this video dude, I wish more people would do these. I just think of it compared to sports. throughout school theres sooo many parents that push their kids wayyy too hard into sports and force them to revolve their entire life around it, as if they'll ever have a career in it. There's a finite number of positions in the sports world, only so many people can play. Scholarships are the only legit reason to push for sport (especially with the potentially life altering injuries that high schoolers keep getting.) Music on the other hand, has just as many or more scholarships available, and no matter how many of us there are in the world, there's ALWAYS room for more. In fact, the more of us there are and the more popular it gets, the more we ALL make from it. So keep up the good work brother, we need more of this in the world, keep on the Good fight!

@@auxorion I think YT is definitely guilty of selling that dream and dangling the carrot - don't think it's quite fair to call this guy out himself on it though. I think his story resonates with a lot of people trying. Even though I hate the YT carrot-dangling - i.e. there's always a chosen few, whether that's the algorithms or so-called algorithms - I think it's fair to say that YT more than anything else has the potential to give you the traffic to make something of your efforts. I'm grateful for this video as a source of inspiration and some hope when you do end up banging your head against the door a lot of the time trying to make some sort of living from music. My take-home from this is that YT can be a significant turning point. You're nothing without an audience, I'm happy this guy found one :) - whether he cares or not ( I suspect he does).

Great story. I am currently in the full time salary + benefits tech job stage, and also married (so have to balance time for a healthy relationship). One thing I will say is while my full time job isn't the dream, it is providing me stability to slowly build my home studio setup. I've been able to pay off all my software, buy most the synths and plugins I want, upgrade and rebuild my PC to be more powerful, etc. Every time I'm feeling defeated, I do look at my setup and see how far I've come over the past 10 years and realize, I'm invested into it. It's going to always be there. I just have to keep putting in the 10,000 hours to master the craft, and most importantly, finish content. A key part of your story is putting stuff out; whether it succeeds or fails. At the end of the day, released is better than unfinished and dormant on the hard drive. Hats off to you for never giving up and putting yourself out there. Valuable lessons for every producer. Hard work, consistency, and goal-oriented tasks that prevent you from endlessly tweaking just one more knob/fader.

Wow. Incredible and inspiring story. I like that you showed us all of your failures (and successes) throughout your crazy 7-8 year journey. It amazes me that only a few short years ago (in October 2019), you reached an abyss and were several minutes away from accepting full-time 9-5 "day job" employment again. Yet, as fate would have it, you declined the offer, persevered, and achieved a well-deserved breakthrough in 2020. I have been on the DJ/Producer grind since 2017, and your story inspires me to continue despite the inevitable obstacles in my way.

Jules you are really my biggest inspiration in music production. As a university student who study math, which seems to have no direct correlation with music, I’m feeling quite depressed. However, I went through your previous video about yourself, I found that you are actually facing much more pressure than me, but you still accomplished the goal through your courage and efforts. I’m so impressed by this. Also, I learned almost 100% of my deep & progressive production techniques from your video, PML course, your project and now I have purchased your Project 20, to dive deeper. I believe one day I could jump out of the routine of my life, let what I love become my income. Your story continues to shine as a guiding star for me and your knowledge are helping me grow. Loved the story… That’s kind of my plan… set that ~5 year goal… trying to minimize risk at the same time. I’m super late to the producing game, but just trying to chip away and grow every day, set small goals, and accomplish them one at a time… Starting late (in my early 30’s) and with pretty much no experience except playing drums, it’s overwhelming, but focusing on those small goals helps a ton. Compartmentalize...

This is very inspiring, Jules. It also shows the importance and power of clear goal setting: you said you were going to make your living from music within 5 years, and that's exactly what you did. As someone who is also unhappily working in IT and desperate to live and breathe as a producer, my hat goes off to you. Thanks for the video and for providing the courage that with enough hard work and determination, I can also do something like this. Best wishes to you for 2023 and beyond.

Thank you for sharing your story. I’m a software engineer pursuing the same dream. I just left my job to make the plunge it requires to be successful. I just started taking KZbin seriously, creating teaching material, and recording every day while live-streaming. I just wanted to say thank you for telling your story, it helps those of us further down on the path realize we’re not the only ones to walk the path and that this path is available to us if we stay true to our goals and dreams. Thank you 🙏 btw, I knew your music via the deep house playlist! It’s Cool to put a face to the music!
