Alex Muleke grew up in the Acholi Quarter, a lively low-cost suburb near Kampala. The area was once an internally displaced people's camp, housing people displaced by the LRA war in Northern Uganda.
Muleke tried to carve out a distinct niche for himself among the number of outstanding painters while studying Art at Kyambogo University. He made a unique choice to use charcoal dust and soil from the quarry near his home as a primary painting ingredient.
This decision was influenced by his early experiences. Muleke watched his community's suffering, pain, and strength. He then decided to reflect these emotions through his work. He transforms waste into a strong storytelling tool through art.
