I lived across the🇵🇷 street on 111 street on🇵🇷 Lexington avenue from the🇵🇷 Church,and🇵🇷 witnessed the Takeover was 12,And had tears in my eyes and pride in my heart when they dedicated the street to the Young Lords way. Viva Puerto Rico.🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷

Wow!!! That brings Back Memories... I was a Student of The Original Black Panthers in Newark New Jersey... I was all of 7 years Old... I remember I use to see some of those Flyers hanging on the walls where they use to give us Breakfast before we went to school. And, Breakfast and lunch in The Summer time... Thanks Democracy Now. I really needed this Video...

I remember the Young Lords well, as well as the radical political life of the Lower East Side (AKA the East Village/Loisaida. It was an exciting time, but the combination of government/FBI repression, cointelpro the Nixon spying and infiltrating machine, and the ultimate inhospitableness of the white activists as soon as the draft was rescinded, these and flooding the East Village with heroin were all instruments of betrayal for what we optimistically called "The Movement." And the speaker is absolutely right, it was Black and Puerto Rican kids who were in the forefront of the 1969 Stonewall "Riots." The gay movement, which has been largely gentrified/ bourgeoisified in our time took over both the West and East Village during the wildly promiscuous 1970's and re-emerged as a beautifully radical force during the woeful days of the AIDS crisis! Beautiful production by Democracy Now!

We need a movie about this movement or a documentary on Netflix . its a long time coming the world needs to know who we are and what we contribute to society. as a Nuyorican which is a moniker given by Puerto Ricans to American born Puerto Ricans which I don't agree with , I think we are all Puerto Ricans no matter where we are born and should stand with one another, not build groups that divide us , because that's to easy for them and when i say them i mean the system , el Blanco. I would gladly be prepared to participate on any platform or film in the works as an actor or contributor to this amazing story of who the young lords where and are til this day. this is the story of Americans because we are Americans who want equality just like all other cultures who feel discriminated against and are treated like second class citizens, the time is now!

I am proud to say I was a member of the YLP and joined at the time of the 2nd takeover of the First Peoples Church!!! One can always find fancy explanations and look thru pink glasses years after. Reality is that these Young Lords gave Puerto Ricans a very bad name. Brooklyn is Brooklyn. San Juan is San Juan, two different worlds. You want to change PR you need to live there. My family are Puerto Ricans. Today they live in Florida and Arizona, none of them wants to return to the island. With less corruption and some real vision, the island has lots of potential, but there is no political will and the younger generation moves on to the mainland. Interesting reflection on the past though.
