This is a very important issue. African populations hold a huge wealth of genetic information, but however under-studied. I am very passionate about dissecting the genetic architecture of African populations and I am doing so in a very similar manner - no formal training on human genetics and taking population genetic courses that are really fascinating. Only I am not part of any such lab at the moment.
