Yes. C.Ronaldo still holds the record for most goals ever scored by a single player in Football history. Perhaps, Messi might break it in no time if he continues to score at this rate.

The entire Miami economy is booming and every MLS team is going to make huge amounts of money that they never dreamt of in the past. it is insane that stadiums are unable to accommodate people and tickets are sold within a couple of minutes costing huge amounts as high as 17,000 thousand dollars. No sane individual will ever dare to compare Messi with Beckham. Beckham will not be in the all time top 5 players in his own country, forget about the world. Beckham was a wonderful player with great vision, passing and free kicking ability but even he would be embarrassed, if someone says he is in the league of Messi. Only player who could have given Messi a competition for the GOAT status would have been Maradona. But, even the great Mardona was not able to play at such high level for such long duration as Messi. Messi is a unique player in footballing history, who is at ease as a playmaker and as an out and out striker. Beckham's good looks, celebrity wife helped a lot in building his brand. There were many players during his time, who were superior to him in footballing terms but nowhere near his celebrity status. Messi is a gem, we will never the likes of such again in our lifetime.

unfortunately MLS already locked in TV deals for the next 3-10 years (depending on network) with Fox, ESPN, Apple, Univision, etc. Those TV deals are probably worth a lot more today than they were last year. All those networks are probably super excited about it. They locked in a lower price but now get to benefit from higher ratings, more ad dollars, etc. Just means that the next TV deal for MLS will be WAY bigger.

I reckon if Messi keeps playing well and scoring worldies, I think it will continue to grow. Then you got the World Cup in the US and if somehow the US team can do well in the World Cup, that would help the sport even more over there. Ive never watched a MLS game in my life, but since Messi is there, i love searching KZbin for the Highlights and results, since im across the otherside of the world and normally follow the English Premier League instead.

You have exposed the issue though. A lot of people will seek out highlights of Messi's goals but does that equate to them being Miami fans or caring about that team or the MLS in general? In regards to catching up to the other major American leagues, the top three will likely not be touched any time soon (although MLB is rapidly declining), which leaves the NHL at fourth. I attend both MLS and NHL games in my home market (San José), and let me tell you... the demographics are COMPLETELY different. There is barely any crossover, if any at all. So you are not going to convert fans from one to the other. I can totally picture Sharks fans watching football or baseball, but I just can't see them watching soccer. The same goes for Quakes fans watching hockey.

It's great for MLS, and IMO Messi is by far the greatest ever... however, what happens to MLS when he moves on in a couple of years? The viewership of 2.0 million is tiny in the gigantic American market.... NFL games get anywhere from 5 to 20 times that much.... not to mention NBA and MLB.... Football, or soccer as it is known in the UIS, is still way below that level... MLShas tried Beckham, Zlata and now Mwssi to move up, but experienced only temporary boosts... Messi will bring unprecedented levels of interest for 2-3 years, but when he leaves, how will MLS sustain that level, given m most elite players are now opting for Saudi money or playing in the Big 5 European leagues??

Messi is only having a short term effect on the MLS and the soccer in the US. He is only improving the interested etc short term. In order to create a good league with good following and very good competition, a lot of things will need to change in the US which may not be possible. You need more than just the MLS league. In most if not all good soccer leagues around the world, there is the first division, second division, third division, fourth division, plus some other more amateur leagues. That is needed for a healthy league and healthy interested in soccer. Secondly, youth soccer needs to get cheaper. To play for some good teams in the US kids have to pay $6000+ a year. Some even pay $15k per year, plus travel money.. That will not work. Messi's impact on the MLS and the league is positive to a point. The $20k ticket prices for the NY Red Bull creates a good story, but is not good for soccer and the league. The people that never had any interest in soccer came to the game paying $20k, they will not be future fans once the Messi fever is over. The real fans and kids that should be going to these games, mostly can't afford the tickets. Lastly, in order for teams and youth players in the US to get much better the idea of high school, college path has to be changed. You can't play a couple months each year and expect to get top players. You need to train more or less 10 months of the year - so the high school and college track will not work......

Yeah. It isn't bringing new people. It is making it so only rich people can watch, with ticket sales going from $40-60 per ticket to $500-600 per ticket. It is gouging the average people into not being able to afford to go. MLS needs to regulate better or else it will turn into NFL and most people will not be able to attend.

Yeah, that's true. It sucks that ticket prices are so expensive. Hopefully that will not be the new normal. I think the teams should sell tickets on a lottery system. And then maybe limit each person to only 2 tickets.
