Wow, this is some serious labor, with such a nice payoff. You did a great job - especially in that you're saving likely thousands of dollars doing it yourself. Such a nice upgrade.

Really nice job. Do you know if there is a power tool alternative to digging it out by hand? I want to do this to my entire backyard and the thought of digging it out by hand fills me with dread.

I believe you can rent a sod cutter, as well as a trencher if you need to

Thanks for the share - I was looking for some inspiration on what to lay below gravel for a terrace I'm building - I didn't want to use fabirc and I didn't have enough depth to put a base layer down so I used some sand in some of the less stable areas after seeing your video. It seems to have worked really well! Nice work

That's what I'm planning to do, maybe a 10x15' section that's currently grass, and raised beds atop. If you did it, how did it turn out for you?

Is there any tool pr machine I can rent from home depot etc to remove grass quicker? Or with less labour's?
@abigalemartin2064 ай бұрын
A Rototiller will break it up for easier removal.

Great project, and great job!!! I have plans to do this as well. My only complaint is the subtitling. It would've been much easier to watch if there were narration instead of subtitles. I don't read fast, and I don't like missing any parts of the video; so for every subtitle, I'd have to pause the video, read the subtitle, then watch again. And there were a LOT of subtitles! I mean, I know it sounds petty, but it really takes away from the enjoyment of watching your project come to life, when I have to pause every 10 secs to read. 🙄

Looks nice good work yet trying to do the same on my land and got 3300 sq feet to do. Equally important concrete sand as base no fabric after you cut the grass and soil dirt it. I see thanks for showing me need to gravel my land .....

Great stuff and exactly what I’m planning with our scrappy grass. Can I ask how it’s heating up nearly a year on? Anything you’d do differently if you had to do it again?
@JoshuasGarden10 ай бұрын
It’s holding up well!! I would maybe put landscape fabric just as an extra measure, but it isn’t really necessary, just an added benefit. I would also like to cement in the pavers and level the space so they all sit flat and won’t shift

If you put a calendar reminder every 4-6 months to use a bottle of Home Depot weed-spray and bottle of fungicide on that area, it will help keep any unwanted sprouts away.
@JoshuasGarden Жыл бұрын
I think I’m going to see how this first year goes and if I’ll need to put anything down, but I’m sure it will be inevitable at some point

Please use the DIY naturally harmless version (Dawn, Vinegar, etc ), not Glyphosate spreading weed killers.

Living in Seattle, I’m always cognizant of rain/water. One thing that may prove helpful is installing corrugated panels to the underside of your deck and catching the water in a gutter and downspout at one end (it’s an affordable way to keep the storage area relatively bone dry). By the way, what did you do for the downspout at the corner of your house and storage area?

When you moved the grass to the other spot for your new garden beds, did you have to separate the grass from the soil or did you just throw the whole thing in?

Does grass or weeds ever grow back?
@JoshuasGarden4 ай бұрын
They definitely still will, but it won’t be as bad. The grass really won’t come back but weeds can

I should have put a barrier before the gravel. Overtime the gravel will be buried by sand cause by stepping and the weather.

@adamthepashtun7 ай бұрын
Its not that expensive. Typically like 40-50 dollats a ton plus delivery.
@OldRaver6 ай бұрын
Should tamp down the SAND, NOT the gravel.. sand needs to be as solid as poss. Tamping the gravel down just presses it i to that loose sand 😮cost wise, in a low traffic area, it would have been cheaper and more effective putting decent quality weed suppressing membrane.. you’re gonna regret that in the future.
