Thank you Arith for a very timely video..... as always. I am busy writing my living will, giving instructions not to be kept alive through life support or other artificial medical intervention. My ashes must be thrown into the wind on my favourite mountain while Wardruna's Helvegen is being played....as loudly as possible! What the hell I am looking forward to a new adventure, whether it's in Hel or not.

Hello dear friend. Best of luck in that! I wanted to do the same, however, very specific, and important things (to me), are not legal in my country, so I've passed on the word to those closest to me, and upon my death things will have to be conducted in secret. It's funny and weird that I want a simple life for myself, but my after-death wishes are more elaborate and "fancy" lol. I think it all comes down to a sort of ritual-passage for the next adventure, right?! :D hehe. Best of luck, all the best to you and yours, and may such wishes be granted, but, hopefully, may such a time be far off, still, in your life. Cheers! Have a wonderful day!

Thank you for your videos. Your work is so far beyond others in quality and accuracy i cant say that enough. Even better then jacksons stuff. The depth of knowledge you givecout in every video is just amazing. I was into old norse sagas and history back when it wasn't cool or heard of. I went around for years talking about njalls saga, egils saga, and the history of the Norway kings. I just wanted to thank you for the level of accuracy, information, and love that you bring to the topic

Hello there friend. You are most kind, thank you very much :D I wouldn't say my content is better (or worse) than Crawford's, only different. He focuses on linguistics, namely Old Norse language and its etymological roots, I focus more on my field, which is archaeology, which requires another approach which deals more with social and human sciences. I think our work (and of others) can be complementary. As long as information flows freely, that's what counts :D I remember when I took my first steps towards paganism, at the age of 14-15, and it was surprisingly hard to get any sources on anything. I didn't have internet, KZbin didn't even exist yet, Google was rather recent, not a lot of people were writing extensively about pre-Christian belief systems of any sort, and certainly even less about indigenous religiosities and animistic myths and religions. I'm just happy to be around and giving a little contribution, and allowing people to have access to knowledge. That makes me happy and gives me a purpose. Don't want people to have to go through the struggles we had to endure to get our hands on some useful and unbiased information. Thank you for your support. Thank you for being in there. Have a wonderful day!

This was great, Arith. I haven't finished yet, but I've loved what I've watched so far. On my channel, I spoke about the origins of the Helm of Awe and encouraged viewers to come to you for a better understanding of the staves origins, as I am not as good at articulating this information as you are. Long time fan and have taken a lot of inspiration from you. Looking forward to finishing the rest of this video. (After I get off work. ) Best regards. Keep doing what you're doing, some of us appreciate it more than you know.

I think Hell is mostly cold in Dante's Inferno. Which is strange considering how it has shaped a lot of modern-day Christian conception of Hell. It's cooled by the beating of the giant wings of the Devil.

In the fairytales of the brother's Grimm there is the tale of Frau Holle which is associated with the word "Hölle" - so "Miss Hell". Some scholars believe it as an echo of the original mythology. It depicts the realm of hell as a place that is different depending on your attitude (and a place where the snow comes from). The goddess herself is depicted as nice and cruel, depending on how you treat her. So, you may have a good live in her realm if you are diligent & kind.

It depends on which version of the story how she behaves. In one version the gate entrance decides....also, the most known version of Holle is rewritten with patriarchal hands....
@Uuodan42
@Uuodan42 Жыл бұрын
@@debbyvanlinden5705 Oh yes. Not only patriarchal but outright 18th century "to serve shall be your highest goal" mentaility. I just think Hulda (the leader of the wild hunt), Holle & Hel are quite similar in their association with death. In combination with Nerthus, this points towards a more widespread "Life and Death" Goddess cult. But yes, quasi all records we have are written by men from a different cultural background.

They chamged my name in order to safe my life and they didnt let me go to the other department. The director of fhe hospital called the 2 chiefs of each department and the one protecting me won the case. I will always appreciate the sudslavic people for saving my life. SaFe i meant with F.

The great mystery for me is why is this all "norse" rather than "germanic"? There's a clear yet unexplained need for people interested in this broad area to grant it all to scandinavia (all the while talking english, of course) when we know that old "norse" beliefs were, unsurprisingly, kin-close with the rest of the pagan germanic world, though many small details were probably different. I'm surprised I don't see anyone in the comments asking, "so why do we call it hell in english...?" - the clear answer being that the christians pulled the same trick with the old english. I doubt you think the anglo-saxons were norse because many of them came from denmark. I'm saying this because I've grown up hearing all of this being described simply as "norse", and it took me a stupid amount of time to find out that the english, dutch and germans had beliefs that were basically a sibling to these beliefs. All it takes is one acknowledgement in a video. Yet it really does end up feeling like people go out of their way to hide this.

I tend to lean more toward how Jackson Crawford interprets it. Hel is made up of all the afterlife locations. Niflheimr, Valhǫll, Fólkvangr, etc. are likely all different aspects of the same place.
@ArithHärger
@ArithHärger Жыл бұрын
Hello there. That is a plausible interpretation, but it has quite a lot of flaws when we focus the study on each of the afterlife places we can find both in the Myths (and poetic material and sagas) and on the archaeological record. Mind you that I follow Crawford's work and I have no doubt he is a reliable source of information, and I like the fact that when he doesn't know (as his field is linguistics) he calls in experts on other matters. With all due respect towards him, and you, I find the idea of Hel, as a junction of all the afterlife places, to be rather simple and lazy, as it lacks the animistic understanding of after-death conceptions typical of the Iron Age and other previous periods, and a deeper study on folklore, myths and animistic belief systems. All interpretations are plausible until there's evidences to refute them. Old Norse afterlife is far too complex to be placed within a single realm, which is why in post-Christian written sources there are so many contradictions concerning afterlife places, and making Hel a single realm of the dead, even though skaldic poetry and other earlier sources clearly demonstrate a diverse animistic cosmology, but Christian authors had a far simple perspective concerning the afterlife, as such, (and by lacking the knowledge of an animistic world-view) they have over-simplified Hel. The Scandinavian Iron Age demonstrates the culmination of several belief systems and several conceptions of different afterlife places that were eventually (many of them) fused with the Hall Culture. But more on this in future videos. Have a great day and thank you for your feedback.
