My psych nurse dad suggests that the letters degrade in quality possibly because the writer's mental health was deteriorating; hence the deaths getting more viscious. He also believed the killer died shortly thereafter of God knows what (drunken accident, smoking, heart attack, who knows) because someone like that wouldnt stop killing until he was caught or died.

Geroge Lusk is always presented as some violent vigilante organising mobs. In the 1988 TV series Jack the Ripper starring Michael Caine, they even portray Lusk as a menacing communist rabble-rouser. In fact, he was quite a slight man with a soft-spoken voice who was only interested in setting up passive neighbourhood watch communities.

Since it's mentioned in the video, if you have any interest in history and haven't read it yet, 'Devil in the White City' is a fantastic read. It juxtaposes the task of building the World's Fair and all the work and wrangling that went into creating a human marvel with the hideous career of Holmes and the building if his human deathtrap.

Second the suggestion. I am almost afraid that the movie will focus too much on Homes and not as much on the building of the Fair which is as interesting as the building of the Murder Castle. The book provides both.

I'm so glad you busted that H.H. Holmes thing, that's a ridiculous assumption on several parts. I've seen other "documentaries" that have the Ripper coming to America, one of which discussed him killing a prostitute in Galveston and another that he was the "Servant Annihilator" of Austin Tx (or the Austin Axe Man, another name given). It's all so weird and we'll never know for sure. I've toyed with the thought of him being a vampire, due to the disappearance, but that's been done to death (pun not intended). I write vampire novels and I do a lot of research before writing. Your discussion of things not invented yet made me think of the writing of my first book when I spent about a month looking at clothing that was and wasn't in late 1800s and 1900. Things like bra's, zippers, hair conditioner, etc. I drove the archivists in New Orleans crazy trying to find out when the first car was used in the city. I'm going to be going to watch your Lemmino series next. Thanks for a great afternoon of Ripperology.

On the vampire element. It was a long time since I read it but this is played with in the "official" Dracula sequel by Bram Stokers great grand-nephew (or something like that) but I have a memory of it covering "the Autumn of Terror". In case you want to give it a read for part of research into the idea, I won't spoil details - especially as by now I've forgotten specifics and I don't have any inclination to reread it!
@charlayned
@charlayned 13 сағат бұрын
@@lankylankersson3246 Hmmm, I'll have to give that a read. I have worked in Vlad Dracula in my series (he's retired, tired of the vampire politics and the way the society is). I also have Jean Lafitte (because no one knows where he is buried or exactly when he died, so....) and Gregori Rasputin because anyone who can be poisoned, shot, stabbed, and thrown into an icy river deserves to be immortal (I know, they found the body but....) They not the major characters, But Lafitte is there pretty much all the time with the mains and Rasputin just joined the story and has a small bit to play. :)

Murder by Decree Is another film about Jack the Ripper that I actually really enjoy, it stars Christopher Plummer and James Mason as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, respectively. On the Jack the Ripper Tour channel, author and Ripperologist Steven Blomer and the host Richard Jones have a video discussing whether or not Aaron Kosminksi is the best candidate for Inspector Swanson's "Kosminkski." It is about an hour-long discussion, and interestingly Blomer prevents tons of evidence showing that Aaron Kosminski is indeed still the most likely candidate of any Polish Jew committed at that time that we know about.

22:53 I am so glad you pointed this out you know, that the From Hell letters and the previous two were most likely two seperate people. I do agree that the first 2 letters were most likely hoaxes, by journalists looking for a scoop or by some weirdo who just got lucky(!) with the details. I have come across a couple of other reasons for the different letters. - They are from the killers (team of two and they are sending thm to annoy the police) - They are both fake (a lot of weirdoes in the East End of London) I mean the police did get a letter from one saying they were a giant vulture I would love to have a conversation about the East End murders with you :)

And also makes me wonder if the And have you heard of the theory that Degas was Jack the Ripper? Saw that one recently on TikTok. Like hearing the theories that other people might have about who Jack the Ripper was.

44:04 Oh that's just par for the course of Alan Moore, the guy infamously hates every adaptation of his comics and graphic novels (notably Watchmen) with the exception of one. I genuinely do apologize if this comes across as insensitive, but....I seriously don't understand what you're talking about when you discuss how "horrifying" the Mary Jane Kelly photographs are. Maybe I'm looking at the wrong ones, idk, but every photo of that scene I've found is extremely blurry and fuzzy, I mean this is a camera from 1888 after all. I just don't get how some one could be "scarred for life" when you have to actively try and decider which fuzzy gray blob is supposed to be a wound and which fuzzy gray blob is supposed to be the gore on the bed and which fuzzy gray blob is supposed to be one of the few parts of her body that wasn't mutilated. I'm sorry, I just...I've seen pencil drawings that are creepier and more disturbing than that photo....

The Royal Conspiracy thing always seemed crazy to me, but of course it's the sort of thing that appeals to people. I read a bunch of books about Jack when I was in high school and just after (which means 50 years ago) and one of them made an interesting point, or suggestion. According to that author, there was a rumor going around after Mary Jane Kelly's murder, that the Prince Albert Royal or whatever his name was had been seen leaving the apartment. The author accepted that the actual prince wasn't the killer, but supposed that said killer might have *resembled* the prince, and been mistaken for him. There are a million theories. As for H.H. Holmes I agree with Chris, there are few similarities. One other intriguing (though again highly unlikely) connection is the much less well-known "Servant Girl Annihilator" who terrorized Austin, Texas a couple of years earlier. The biggest problem with this connection is that the Austin murderer used an axe, not a knife, and didn't perform any "surgery" beyond killing the women with said axe. By the way, in this case we know the nickname came from a writer: O. Henry (pen name of William Sydney Porter, a short story writer of considerable renown) coined the name for the guy while working as a journalist.

One thing that gets overlooked sometimes when people say the investigation into Jack the Ripper was incompetent or that they shouldn't have cleaned up the crime scenes is that at this time, police forces were a new thing. No one really knew yet whether the priority of the police should be keeping the peace or investigating crimes. Most of what they did was basically riot control. The show you mentioned, Ripper Street, does a really great job of portraying this.

I despise how studios think you can only sell movies by having the most outlandish answer to an unsolved case. Like most serial killer cases, the real solve is probably quite boring and just shows the horrors that everyday people are capable of. London was one of the busiest citites in the world at this time. Ships and carts were arriving with tourists and immigrants from everywhere all the time. JTR could just be someone who had killed elsewhere in the world and was bought to London for work or pleasure, killing whilst he was there and then vanishing into the night. There are so many possible suspects already so why do people feel the need to create grand conspiracies. Respect the women who lost their lives and respect the mostly good work of an unprepared set of detectives.

Hey Chris. Great you did the Jack the Ripper tour. Can I ask who was your tour guide? Was it Richard Jones. He's done TV series, his own YT podcast and books on him and he does the most famous Jack The Ripper tour. I went with him and he's amazing.

I thought it was proven HH Holmes didn’t exist

He definitely existed, although that wasn’t his real name. It’s been proven pretty conclusively that HH Holmes wasn’t Jack the Ripper.

I'm actually surprised to this day that JtR ever got as popular as he (or she?) got, considering that crime must've been rampant in cities like London, New York or Paris back in those days, when the police had little to no means solve cases outside of talking to people.

While I do think Michael Caine's Jack the Ripper is probably the best rendition of 1988 London it is one of the first to follow the idea that it is all about HRH Albert Victor (he wasn't made Duke of Clarence and Avondale until 1890 which everyone seems to forget), Dr William Gull and the Masons. This was first put forward in the 1973 BBC TV series. However it does present this view in a far more realistic way. Caine does a fine job although his portrayal of Aberline was muddied by fictitious alcoholism and an affair, though not with any of the Five. Still a good watch. As an aside in the Caine version the term "Juwes" was assumed (by the Mason's amongst the cast) not as a misspelled Jews but to Masonic lore that refers to the three assassins Jubelo, Jubela, and Jubelum. One Ripperoliigist has actually put forward the theory that it was 3 men, HRH, Gull and his son in law Dr. Theodore Dyke Acland who committed the murders based on this word.

so 3 human reviews and they couldn't understand that within context the swastika was not used to glorify germany war crimes but is purely coincidence?
