@@anupamsingh25 Wasim Akram and the Pakistani fast bowler tribe deserve all the accolades that have come their way. But before you rush to label them as legends and choose to classify Bumrah in a class below, understand this: cricket DNA has changed on a fundamental level since the time they played. Pakistani fast bowlers brought in the pioneering technique of reverse swing, something the world had never seen before and took time to adapt. Add to that, they already were accomplished in all the other skills which was to be acquired in that era: slow balls, yorkers, bouncers, conventional swing, and, last but not the least, blistering pace. Wasim Akram is hailed as the sultan of swing while Waqar Younis is renowned for his toe crushers. But it was undoubtedly their skill with the reverse swing that brought them unprecedented success. Jasprit Bumrah can do all that and even though he may not outrightly shine in one department like they did, no single bowler uses all the weapons in the fast bowlers’ arsenal as effectively as he does. And while batting in the 90s was a fast-paced version of the traditional approach which had remained largely unaltered for almost a century or more, it changed rapidly after the popularisation of the T20 format over the last 15 years. It has become more brazenly aggressive and more disruptly innovative while the bowling skills have more or less stayed the same. At the same time, the rule modifications over the last decade have been increasingly stacked in favour of the batsmen. They already had a bias towards the batsmen except for the one flaw about being unfairly declared out which has since been redeemed with the introduction of DRS. But now the bowler’s use of bouncers has been crippled and has to face the music during the fielding restrictions of Power Play. The third umpire is watching the bowlers’ front foot landing like a hawk to check for no balls. Their ability to extract reverse swing has been all but eliminated in the shorter format with the introduction of two new balls per innings. Even with DRS, the existing rules favour the batsmen when it denies bowler their wicket taking chances if they pitch the ball outside the line of leg stump even if the ball trajectory goes on to hit the stumps. Same goes for impact of the ball on the pads outside the stump shadow no matter where the ball is headed. In such an environment, Bumrah manages to bully batsmen into submission without resorting to outright aggression. That alone should tell you about the calibre of the bowler. There is no other bowler currently in world cricket who can do it as consistently and as remarkably as him. Even if you do not recognise his genius, Wasim himself does. And he has repeatedly mentioned it on air during commentary and on his post-match analysis on A Sports.
