Very nice Daniel. KKC is a nice city and I need to visit Lao soon. The lovely, smiling stranger girl next to you on the bus is a good representation of the differences in culture between Asia and the West. An American girl would never give you a nice smile, more like a sneer and a threat to call the police... I recall boarding a plane from Philadelphia to Paris a few years back: A teenage girl was assigned the seat next to me, I nodded, never said a word, kept my eyes in my magazine, and sure as hell didn't touch her. After a few minutes she disappeared, replaced a few more minutes later by a 40-something cow who plopped her big carcass into the seat, looked at me and said "Well I guess you aren't getting the young meat after all." I looked at her in disgust and went back to my magazine. Such is the degradation of society in my country. Everyone is a victim and everything is an assault. A culture of self-inflicted misery...

As for 25 April 2017, the fares TO Vientiane from these cities in baht are as follows- Nong Khai 55, Udon Thani 80, Khon Kaen 180, Bangkok 900. Hope that helps.
