Come along on the journey of this table from massive old log to work of art. Enjoy the hijinks that ensues as the Modustrial Maker and I attempt to saw logs! No, not sleeping! But cutting this log with an old time lumberjack saw and see just how cool it is to turn a huge slab of wood into a functional and beautiful piece of furniture!

Those geometric cuts show that gorgeous grain so perfectly, better than live edge. When you painted that top I was yelling, “What?! No, man” but you made me eat my words, really nice. I’d like to see the old slab as the back of a chair with some of your design flair, reminds me of Venus’s clamshell.
@dannym2359
@dannym2359 2 жыл бұрын
that top cut could be done with the super thick material they used to coat wooden tables with in the 80s and 90s (can't remember what it was) as that would increase the thickness and would still highlight the original material. It would be cool to see a modern artist using very old materials.

A PORTRAIT SLAB !! ... I do charcoal portraits on epoxy surfaces = epoxy-captured charcoal art. 1st a decorative, but transparent epoxy layer on the slab, 2nd the charcoal portrait/art on the epoxy surface, 3rd a cover-coat of clear epoxy. Original fine art preserved forever on that beautifully interesting slab. I would love a project like that..!!

What you guys needed to do was get a wooden pallet and remove all the middle slats, just keeping the edges. Then sit the log down in the pallet and have the pallet sitting on some sort of rubber mat so it doesn't move. That way the hand saw would have actually functioned.

You should make a floor puzzle for your kids out of the extra slab by planing it down to an inch thick and then cutting it into some oversized puzzle pieces, but you’ll have to mount it on some 1/8” plywood or the end grain pieces will break easily.

I really like the shape of the table. I do agree with your son though about the gray legs. I like the painted top, but I think a stain (maybe black) would've been better. I'd give it a 9/10, but who am I kidding this is insanely impressive. 10/10. Part of me kinda wishes there was a combo of your table and Modustrial's.

Facetnating! LOL Only thing different I might have done, several very thin coats of epoxy. Because the wood is so soft, it sucks the epoxy in. Doing thin coats and sanding just barely back to the wood would let the wood suck up as much as it wants, then your last coat could be a bit thicker and would come out mirror smooth. But the design is seriously awesome. I hated seeing you paint it, but by the time it was done, even that worked well!
@RedBudRed
@RedBudRed 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, I usually don’t like painting wood. Honestly, I rarely even stain it because I like highlighting the specific species beauty, however, for this piece the top was pretty rough. :) Mike really did a lot better than me with his epoxy finish. I think I still might try and sand it a bit and do a few more coats, just didn’t have time to get the video out in time.

It has been so much fun to watch all four videos in this collab! I loved to see how the 2 tables from the same log came out so different. The cut facets of your edge were perfect! I really liked the tiny little bit of live edge. The painted top came out nicely since you could still see the grain. Generally i am not a fan of grey, but the light grey top and legs contrasted with the warm wood edge looked very nice; i think the shiny epoxy finish helped the color. Arnolf was one of the fist things i noticed in the last video. I love your portrait. He appears in the bike lathe at 2:57, fallen log lamp at 10: 37, succulent trough right away in the lower corner at 1:01, Modustrial Maker's house warming table at 0:00 and finally, in this video at 17:06.
