Norman Sandfield, collector of Native American bolo ties and ephemera, explores this unique art form in connection to the museum’s current exhibition on the subject. This distinctive fashion adornment originated in the Southwest in the 1940s, and its popularity as an alternative to the traditional necktie quickly spread throughout the West. Sandfield will share personal anecdotes of working with Native artisans of jewelry and silversmithing to acquire his personal collection which has now been gifted to the Heard Museum in Phoenix.
