Lovely episode guys! LOVED it! Great edit job - whoever did it! Nice music choice too. Thank you for sharing your life with us. It is so good you two are chasing your dreams now. Take a little advice from an old fart. Don't wait! I waited and paid the price. I always thought, once I retire, I'll go cruising and see the world. I took all the classes and workshops, got every certification. I studied and prepared every way I could. Then 3 short years before retirement BAM!!! Health problems. Now all those dreams are gone.

I am so proud of you Michaela!! Even the small steps of sailing, knowing and understanding how the wind affects the sails and where they need to be to go in a certain direction is a step towards peaceful sailing. And, not getting sick on top of that is amazing!! Nice job 👍 I'm so stoked to see where you take Thalia and the adventures you will have..

Thank you so much, it really does mean a lot! It is wild to think about how it has already been a year, but also has only been about a year of doing this. But no matter what, we are going to learn it out there 🙂 Thank you so much for watching! ⛵🎉🙂

Patrick, it is absolutely normal to feel anxious when doing anything like this. I would be worried when you don't feel anxious at all. It was awesome to see the excited look on Michaela's face and congratulations on learning so much so quickly. I know sailors who have been sailing for longer than you guys yet haven't learned as quickly as you guys have. Great to know that you guys are getting less queasy on your sailing adventures. Soon no queasiness at all!

I'm delighted to see you both finally getting underway! Excellent to see you (Michaela) learning about what makes you sick and being better prepared at dealing with it, especially from a preventative perspective and go you for really getting your sea-legs in place! Top marks to you also for being the calm, psychological anchor and grounding the both of you. Just shows how great you both are as a team on the boat. Completely agree about how big a thing for you it is that you recognised changing heading would impact the wind going into the sails and whether that was a good or bad thing for your journey. Now think back 12 months and how quickly you got sick as soon as a swell hit the bow! Excellent work from Patrick as always with the mechanics, navigation, etc., and just generally being an awesome human! Watching you two just makes me want to get onto a boat more than ever! Like all good things though I just need to be patient and I know that my time will come. I have said to myself from the start of all this that I wouldn't become full-time liveaboard until both of my children have moved out into their own homes, and at 16 & 17 they still have a little longer before this becomes a reality for them. I don't have that many more years yet though so I can wait just that little bit longer.

Hey Pete! We are so excited as well! Thalia was a boat that was meant for adventure, so we have to get out there! We have been thinking a lot about how far that we have come in a year (and will likely make a video when the time comes around) but it is crazy to think how fast it has gone by but also how much we had to learn to get here. We are feeling much better about so many aspects of this life, which is making us feel it will be much more sustainable long term. It sounds like you will be on a boat before you know it! The patience really does pay off. We waited a whole year to save money and figure out what kind of boat we wanted to look at and I think that is still jumping in with both feet not really knowing much lol But we will see you on the water soon enough! p.s. We went ahead and added all of the colors we could for the mug. I think 15 oz black is going to be the closest thing to the dark blue, because we really have no idea if / when they will ever stock that again. But we figured we would just toss all the options out and people can choose what they like lol Sorry for taking so long to get it up there 🙂 Thank you so much for being on our adventure with us! ⛵🎉🍀🙂

@@patrickandmichaela you both certainly seem to have a lot more confidence in yourselves with your skills and also in Thalia that she will look after you to the best of her abilities. Obviously things will go wrong along the way, that's just part of life as a whole whether on the water or on land, but overall I bet you get to have some incredible adventures with her over the next however many years. I'm sure I'll get on a boat eventually. I need to say goodbye to one phase of my life (I'm trying to sort out the disposal of assets of my late parents estate and it is proving somewhat complex) first and move somewhere closer to water / docks so that it's easier to get to any boat I own. I think the bigger thing for me is that I would love to own a Cat for the space and comfort but on this side of the Atlantic they're much more expensive to buy. Plus, I need the overall inheritance to resolve itself so don't know exactly how much money I have to play with yet. I don't want to go thinking I've got $100,000 to play with to only discover that I've only got half of that; likewise I don't want to budget for $50,000 to find I can then afford something newer and nicer which needs much less work doing to it. Thank you so much for all of the time and effort you've put in to help with the mug thing. I went for the larger green one in the end as, although it's not a dark green, it's still a green that I like and can live with. Come December I'll be able to enjoy coffee thinking of you guys anchored up in tropical blue waters with my turn not being that far behind hopefully! Always a pleasure to be here, never a chore! Wish me luck on one thing though as I am playing catch up on Bret and Marissa's channel so the algorithm can hopefully fall in love with them to make them a bit more popular 😁

This recipe was inspired by your canned mackerel in tomato sauce ;-) Mark's Fish Chowder Prep Time: 15 mins Cook Time: 35 mins Total Time: 50 mins Yield: 6 servings Ingredients: 1 Tablespoon olive oil 1 Tablespoon butter 2 Yellow onions, diced 3 Ribs celery, diced 1 Green Bell Pepper, chopped 1/2 cup white wine 4 Medium Yellow Potatoes, chopped 2 Cups fish stock 1 Teaspoon seafood seasoning (such as Old Bay®) Salt and ground black pepper to taste 1 Cup heavy whipping cream 1 Can 15Oz Mackerel in Tomato Sauce, chopped 3 Cholula hot sauce to taste Directions: Heat olive oil and butter in a large stockpot over medium heat; cook and stir onions, celery, and Bell pepper in the hot oil until softened, about 5 minutes. Add wine; raise heat to medium-high and cook until wine is reduced by half, 2 to 3 minutes. Mix potatoes, fish stock, seafood seasoning, salt, and pepper into onion mixture; bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low, cover stockpot, and simmer until potatoes are tender but not falling apart, 10 to 15 minutes. Heat cream in a small saucepan over medium heat just until cream is steaming, about 5 minutes. Stir cream and mackerel into potato mixture; cook about 10 minutes. Season chowder with sugar, hot sauce, salt, and pepper.

What is the brand name of the headsets you are using? Do they work to your satisfaction?
@patrickandmichaela4 күн бұрын
They are made by Eartec and one of the best things we have bought for sailing together (They don't call them marriage savers for no reason!) We bought a set and an extra set of batteries. This way we can swap them out when they are low and charge the spare set, so we are never worried about them dying on us. We have chatted with people who have bought different versions that cover both ears, and an issue with those is you can't hear someone who is yelling information at you while you are docking. For us it was easy, because we have a full enclosed cockpit it can be very hard to hear someone who is up front dealing with the anchor while the other is at the helm (especially because Patrick is a bit hard of hearing and Michaela is not that loud of a person). We use them while docking, anchoring, and even when just navigating through fields of crab pots. The battery life is stellar on them, there were days we used them for like a full 10 hours and did not have to swap the batteries until that night. We absolutely love them. The swing goes up and down kind of all the time! It is just some quick bowlines and we are back swinging! I think we had it down for the fridge review, and also the fact it is not very nice in rough weather. It kind of just flings all about and you could not reasonably use it. But you will see it back up and in action soon 🙂 Thank you for watching! ⛵🎉
@svsaguaro5 күн бұрын
When's the last time you had a rigging inspection? That forestay is WOBBLING. Might be normal for your boat, as you seem to have an inner forestay too with the dual furlers. Or maybe that outer furler is not on a forestay? Either way make sure you know why it wobbles so much! Also, you need to tug on your outhaul and tighten that mainsail up. It's so baggy it's rubbing against the topping lift line. You're going to get some chafe, and you're just not getting good wind in that sail. Assuming you guys are a few weeks or more behind on your videos, but definitely you want to head much much further south by now if you're getting to florida. If you're rounding hatteras, you might want to consider taking inside ICW route. My boat is too tall to go inside. But once you're south of hatteras, I'd do your "ocean hops". I always do Beaufort to West Palm directly if I can find a good window. You can huge the coast all the way down (inside the gulf stream/shore you'll get a small counter current). Enjoy the sailing! Glad you guys building confidence! Fun to watch. Wife and I were where you guys are at skill-wise when we bought our catamaran 3 years ago. Just progress at YOUR comfort level. It's 100% OK to day-hop your way down the coast. Cheers guys! - SV Saguaro
@patrickandmichaela4 күн бұрын
We could probably use a rigging inspection. I want to say the forestay has always been like that, but kind of hard to know. We are playing around with options on the mainsail, but I know it always sits up against those top lines (was a complaint from the previous owner as well). May have to do some more thinking on it. I want to say with one reef in the shape it much better, but that sail we went without a reef and this is what it looked like. We take the inside when rounding hattaras as we dont want the stress, and are certainly making our way south as fast as we reasonably can. It will be easier once we can hit the ocean and start overnighting again. Will probably also jump inside for cape fear, then just do outside the rest of the way. Thanks so much for taking the time for the well thought out comment! Appreciate you being here! 🎉⛵
@svsaguaro4 күн бұрын
@@patrickandmichaela No problem! I can say if the previous owner had issues with sails, and the furler has "been like that" I would absolutely be skeptical. None of that looks right. I'd get a rigger to come on and give you some help. It's relatively cheap (as we know boat things are NEVER cheap). Super highly recommend the yacht rigger if you're going to florida. And if you hire someone who doesnt show up with tension gauges and tools throw them off your boat. No true rigger should be working on your boat "by feel." I made this mistake and my rig was overtensioned by a guy who raced boats. It's a LAGOON catamaran, I'm not racing 😆! But I think you should really figure out how to get that mainsail to look right. Figure out if the sail is oversized, or fix your outhaul. Are all your battens in the pockets or are you missing some? There could be a lot of reasons for the floppy sail,
