The USA had an aristocracy of its own in their day, which was willing to welcome them as celebrities and they got lots of invitations. But as old friends passed on, their circle got limited. I remember seeing the "tour" of their home, and the lavish furnishings, which appeared to be quite posh, -- too posh for any victimhood, on their part. Wallis DID pose in some of the "I will hold my head up high, and try to look arrogant, and haughty" photographs -- the way MM did at Queen Elizabeth's Funeral. Both David and Wallis did not seem to realise that they "were being played" by a foreign power, THEY thought "the friendly smiles", handshakes, curtseys, banquets, and parties were because THEY WERE a lovely couple, on their "Honeymoon", in the Alps.

She was related to wealthy and prominent Baltimore people, but she was definitely the poor relation living off her relatives as a child. She reinvented herself in China, becoming the grand socialite and hostess there, and carried that over when she and her second husband moved to England. By the time Wallis met the Prince of Wales (as he was then) she was definitely high society, and when Meghan met Harry she was only a second-rate TV actress. But she didn't start out that way.

An interesting side of Wallis is that she was a superb hostess, because she not only encouraged guests to speak about themselves, but genuinely listened with interest. And she loved hearing entertaining gossip! Guests felt special around her and all agreed that she was a superb hostess. Perhaps the greatest lesson to be learned from Wallis and Edward is that two people without special skills or talents or a great work ethic, and without the guidance and management provided by courtiers, increasingly make bad choices and ultimately end up alone and exploited. Bitterness and resentment are also likely to increase as they decline. In an interview shortly after the abdication, Edward showed himself to be intelligent, thoughtful and well informed. The life he led after the abdication eroded those characteristics. Harry did not start off as richly endowed with intelligence as Edward, so his future looks bleak. Meghan is a dishonest, untrustworthy malignant narcissist, so her future is also bleak. Just my opinion!

I’ve always thought it was CREEPY how much the Harkles physically resemble the Windsors. They could play them in a lifetime movie. Also the way MM used to do her hair like Wallis with the harsh center part, and the low bun at the base of the head. And of course MM has copied a couple of outfits of Wallis exactly. Prince Philip used to call MM DOW behind her back, because he couldn’t get over how much MM resembled the Duchess of Windsor. I don't think H & M will ever wake up and learn from the outcome Edward and Wallis lived. While Harry at least was raised with some sense of the obligations that went hand in hand with the privileges of his birthright, Meghan was born, raised, and spent her entire life in and around an industry for which notoriety is often a much easier path to fame and riches than hard work and talent. Where vapid, shallowness seems to be the order of the day. Especially in this era of reality TV, celebrity "feuds" for PR, and revealing the most intimate details of one's life can result in sizable paychecks, the more prurient the better to ensure a hefty payday, I'm sure she thinks it terribly archaic to observe any sense of decorum and discretion. And he's so smitten with her - and over-the-top jealous of his brother - that he'll go along with any scheme she hatches to give them what they "deserve". May they, indeed, get what they deserve in due time.

Even if there is “regret,” it’ll do no good so long as they think they were forced to do what they did. What’s he supposed to do now though? H’s story is forever linked with M’s, and if the children are legitimately theirs, then he’s tied to her in that way as well. There’s a chance he could divorce M, come back to the UK, and at least be allowed to be within Royal proximity. He might even be given a couple little jobs to keep him busy. If Wallis was suffering from severe Alzheimer’s she probably kept everything exactly the same because she thought Edward WAS returning! My best friend’s mother lingered with Alzheimer’s for 5 years before she finally died, and she thought her granddaughters were her daughters, it is a cruel disease.

The biggest problem with that man child is he doesn’t have enough to do. Either of them. When you are a good productive busy, you don’t have time to be an asshole. Proof that if parents pave the road for their children so they don’t experience any potholes, they have no skills in conducting themselves when the road is bumpy. The story goes that Edward was treated like a king in his French mansion. He seems not to have changed his mindset; once a king, always a king. He did not pursue a new career, but seemed stuck in his old. From the outside, his life seems meanigless. Poor manchild. Poor Wallis, who did not get away.

I read that the servants were dressed in liveries and addressed them both as your royal highness. There is a video on utube where someone goes to the house in Paris after Mohammed Alfyed bought it. Turned into a museum and there is all Edward’s outrageous outfits in the closets and some of Wallis. ( the rest went back to USa) she takes you from room to room and talks about the pieces of furniture. Think it’s villa winsor or something like that. It’s quite sad watching it.

I enjoy the historical aspects of these videos. As for Harry and Meghan: I think Harry already regrets his choices. Unlike Wallace, I don’t see Meghan staying with Harry. Perhaps Wallis accepted she’d have nothing if she left Edward. While Meghan actually believes she can achieve fame, money, power and success despite Harry. She’ll kick him to the curb and blame him and the royal family for her own failures.

I think Harry is as conceited and has as inflated opinion of his own worth. Edward expected to be able to return to the UK after his marriage and more or less continue as normal. The reality of his situation came as a complete shock. As for H and MM they made the mistake a lot of silly, self absorbed people have made, they believed their own publicity! You are nothing without the institution a fact the rest of the family are cognisant of!

Love your work! A significant difference between the Windsors and the Sussexes is the children. The Sussex children have potential to one day be media distractions but I agree the Wales children will soon dominate headlines, further devaluing the Sussexes

Pluto, you have a real gift for producing great documentaries. This is another great one and I believe we can expect the same dismal results with Harry and Meghan in terms of sort of becoming unimportant and uninteresting. The big difference will be that Wallis and Edward seemed to keep up appearances in monetary terms. Harry and Meghan will not be able to do this because their money will all be spent with no income to look forward to, at least, that I know of. Thank you so much for these documentaries comparing Edward and Wallis with Harry and Meghan.

I believe there was contempt in the marriage between Wallis and David. Like there's is contempt in the marriage between Harry and Meghan. It doesn't make for a healthy relationship, but circumstances can keep the Sussexes together as well. Like it did for the Windsors. A deeply sad existence for any other person, but - like you said - perhaps not for a vapid couple like the Sussexes and the Windsors before them.
