I once mimed my impression of a super villain sitting fiendishly while stroking an imaginary cat, and a friend pointed out that I was making the mistake of stroking back to front which would piss off an actual cat, so I told him "I'm doing that deliberately because I'm evil!"

a little trivia, Pedro Armendáriz (Ali Kerim Bey) was terminally ill with cancer during filming. Armendáriz accepted this role partially to provide financial security for his wife. The shooting schedule was altered to film his scenes while he was still physically able. Towards the end of filming those scenes, director Terence Young had to double for the actor in some of his long shots. One month after all of his scenes were completed, Armendáriz shot himself in a Los Angeles hospital.

"She was the wife of Austrian composer Kurt Weill." German, not austrian. And he might have objected being called a german composer. He fled the country in 1933, for obvious reasons, and resented being called a "german composer". In 1947 he wrote in a letter to Life Magazine after being called that: "Although I was born in Germany, I do not consider myself a ‘German composer.’ The Nazis obviously did not consider me as such either and I left their country (an arrangement which suited both me and my rulers admirably) in 1933. I am an American citizen and during my dozen years in this country have composed exclusively for the American stage" So the correct way to label him is an american composer of german descent.

🐱👍 In "You Only Live Twice" (1967) we get another Bond villain that spends the movie petting a cat, but in that one you'll eventually get to see his face. The next one, "Goldfinger" includes what is by far, the most famous and iconic of all Bond theme songs, and it's also represented throughout the movie in it's incidental music.

A note on continuity: The movies were adapted in a completely different order than the books. They all differ from the source material in varying degrees and although they did a decent job of re-writing the bigger story of the pursuit of SPECTRE's "Number One," whether by oversight or because they just didn't care, the events of the fifth and sixth movies ("You only Live Twice" and "On Her Majesty's Secret Service") are in the wrong order. If you're really invested in the bigger story, you may choose to watch OHMSS before YOLT. A couple more movies after that, the studio oddly lost the rights to the SPECTRE characters while maintaining the rights to Bond and the other books. It's quite some time before you see any of them again and certain loose story threads are left unresolved for a while.

Yes, they were planned out as a franchise after Dr. No. Fleming's book, on which most of the movies are based (to one degree or another), were about six in by this time. The first was Casino Royale (1953), which was originally a TV play for U.S. tv (with an American Bond; "Jimmy Bond"), and then a spoof in '67, wasn't integrated into the movie franchise until the '00s, when Daniel Craig took over. The second book was Live and Let Die (1954), followed by Moonraker (1955); Diamonds Are Forever (1956); From Russia, with Love (1957); Dr. No (1958); Goldfinger (1959); and the short story compilation, For Your Eyes Only (1960) - all before they planned the Dr. No film. Thunderball (1961) was originally planned by Fleming to specifically become a movie (which it did, first in 1965, as "Thunderball," and again in 1983, as "Never Say Never Again," in which Connery reprised his role as Bond for the first time since 1970's Diamonds are Forever), after which Fleming wrote The Spy Who Loved Me (1962); On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1963); and You Only Live Twice (1964). Fleming had just finished writing, but not editing, The Man with the Golden Gun when he died in 1965, and the second short story compilation, "Octopussy and The Living Daylights," issued in 1966. If you like these early films, you nay really enjoy the books; they're much more consistent in tone and demeanor, and (fortunately) lack the more "whimsical" elements of some of the middle period films - I'm sure that you'll see what I mean eventually (the '70s and early '80s, in particular, could be very awkward times for much of the arts, to say the least - some incredible heights with some unbelievable lows). Either way, I hope that you continue to enjoy your journey!

Most people call Goldfinger the best Bond film, but this is my personal number 1. I've been a Bond nut for decades, and there's just something about the tension and pacing of this one - nothing super over-the-top, this is more stripped-down and focused, IMO. Cracking dialogue, great acting all around, and a very engaging villain. The extended train scenes/setting really have a unique "claustrophobic" and anxious feel to them as you wait for the other shoe to drop. Just a great film all around.

From Russia with Love was the book that got Ian Fleming noticed by hollywood. President Kennedy gave an interview and named it one of his favorite books. After that Fleming's James Bond novels took off and the rest is history. I'm happy to see you are continuing the James Bond movies. Every official Bond actor has their pluses but Sean Connery will always be the epitome of cool. Robert Shaw portrayed the Russian assassin, Red Grant. That scene when Bond and the other guy go into those underground tunnels is a nod to Istanbul's many underground tunnels and cisterns. The site of that scene, the Basilica Cistern is absolutely gorgeous. It was forgotten for a long time after the conquest of Istanbul. At some point a Dutch tourist noticed that many residents were drawing water from and fishing in holes in their basements. He went down there to explore and discovered the vast, forgotten underground structure.

Great reaction, Jen! I'm really starting to love watching your reactions, and one day I'll probably recommend some titles for you. Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, was in the planning section of British Secret Service during World War II. He was one of the people responsible for plans that led to Operation Mincemeat, which was a famous bit of subterfuge that used a cadaver to deliver false intelligence to the Nazis about the location of an Allied invasion. The false information made it all the way to Hitler's desk, and it fooled him. That meant the Germans were expecting an invasion in a different location than the Allies actually landed. That was one of the pivotal moments in the war that helped accelerate the Allied victory in Europe. If you want a great deep dive on Operation Mincemeat, I recommend Season One of "The World's Greatest Con" podcast, which tells that story in depth from the earliest stages of its planning all the way through its successful conclusion. After the war, Ian Fleming created the fictional spy James Bond and wrote a series of novels featuring him foiling plots by enemies of the United Kingdom old and new (into the Cold War era). The first few James Bond films were made from Ian Fleming's novels, but the movie series became so popular that later film writers and directors have continued the franchise all the way up to the present day. Bond movies have a formula, and they have a broad appeal. Bond is the kind of man that every guy wants to be and every girl would love to claim (at least the girls who like men). It's interesting to see how Bond's interactions with women shift through the decades, reflecting adjusting social attitudes about what is acceptable and/or appropriate. But he always skirts that line between the "bad boy" and the "smooth operator," somehow managing to be both at once.

The Bond movie series is based off the novels written by Ian Fleming. He wrote his first Bond novel, Casino Royale, in 1952. It was a success, with three print runs being commissioned to cope with the demand. Eleven Bond novels and two collections of short stories followed between 1953 and 1966. The novels revolve around James Bond, an officer in the Secret Intelligence Service, commonly known as MI6. Bond is also known by his code number, 007, and was a commander in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. The Bond stories rank among the best-selling series of fictional books of all time, having sold over 100 million copies worldwide. (Taken from the wiki.)

At the beginning, the producers wanted to do a series (there were already several books written by Bond’s creator, Ian Fleming). However, funding was very limited (only 1 million dollars for Dr. No). However due to the increasing popularity of each film, the funding was increased and the series eventually became a huge success.

Hands down, "From Russia With Love" is the best Bond film of all time. It's also the Bond film that sticks closest to the novel. Many later films ignore the novel entirely and just use the title.

Jen; Lois Maxwell stated in an interview that before "Dr. No", she and Sean Connery worked out a backstory for Bond and Moneypenny. According to Maxwell, they decided that Bond and Moneypenny spent one night together when they first joined MI-6, but decided that their careers were more important. Consider this backstory when watching the Bond and Moneypenny scenes in the first two films!

Having been a while since I have seen these movies, it's cool watching the Cliffs notes version with your play by play. For all the movie fans watching, what do the following 3 characters from 3 different movies have in common? The head bad guy from The Sting, The boat captain from Jaws, and the blonde bad guy in this movie. ------------------------------------------------------------- Time is up! They are all played by Robert Shaw. If you got that right take a treat out of the snack cabinet. Good job!

The Bad guy was Quinn from Jaws . This movie was a complete mess till they got to editing. They actually started filming before they had a completed script but the end result was great a very under rated Bond Movie. Goldfinger is next and it was the Blue Print for the rest of the Bond Movies from that point forward. One last thing the actor who played Ali Kerim Bey was diagnosed with Cancer while making this movie , they rearranged the shooting so he could be in the film . He died before it was released

From Russia with Love is one of my favorites. The locations, the music, they travel on the Orient Express, and the story has Bond in the Cold War. For my money the incidental music is amazing in this, and has never been done better in a Bond film, and goes perfect with the action, suspense, excitement and drama! 10/10, a perfect espionage movie of it's time but still hold up today, in my opinion!

Hey Jen, loving the Bond reactions. I feel like watching all of these in order is not only entertaining, but also an interesting series of artistic snapshots on the history of popular film as there are literally no other franchises that have lasted as long as the Bond series. Almost a course on the evolution of film. A bit of Trivia for you though. The actor who played Karem Bey, Pedro Armendáriz, was terminally ill with Cancer during filming. Eventually he was too ill to continue and his double had to finish some of his work. He badly wanted to be in the film and also leave some money for his family. He eventually passed away 4 months before "From Russia With Love" was released.

Love your reaction to Bond. Please keep going with the series! When you are ready to move on, a couple of good "oldies" are "The Great Escape" (Based on a huge real life escape from a WWII German Prisoner of War camp) and "Mr. Roberts" (with Henry Fonda, James Cagney and Jack Lemon just to name a few.). Both movies have stellar casts that don't disappoint in acting and a great story-line.

The actor who played Kraustien (number 5) was a well known European actor who escaped a concentration camp twice, the man who plays Red also played the boat captain in Jaws. Another incredible actor Desmond Llewyn (Q) is the greatest character in my opinion besides Bond. Cause Q acts like the father figure for bond, since Bond lost his parents and became an orphan.

You mentioned music, and I believe this is the first Bond film with the music by John Barry. You noticed that the music is big and brassy, and that's a trademark of Bond films. There's always a theme song for the specific movie, the tune of which is then woven in with the general Bond material throughout the film. It won John Berry a knighthood, nd he's not the only Bond person with one. The next film will blow your mind. Goldfinger has perhaps the most notable song but also singer Shirley Bassey built a career on singing it. I can't wait for your reaction.

Sadly Jen the actor playing Bonds Turkish contact and agent 'Karim Bey' was film star Pedro Armendariz who was very popular in Hollywood in the 1940's and 1950's, was dying of cancer and was in great pain while making this movie. This was Armendariz's last film role. Armendariz committed suicide right after making this movie, because he couldn't stand the suffering from cancer any longer. If you ever get the chance to react to an older film Jen, Armendariz played in a 1948 movie called " Three Godfather's", also starring John Wayne, and Harry Carey Jr. ( Sheriff White from the movie Tombstone). A delightful movie with sort of a Christmas theme. Your channel is awesome Jen, and I love your reactions and the way you say 'Sylvia Trench' in this reaction. Keep them coming.

My favourite James Bond movie. It's a true Cold War spy thriller with a story that actually could have happened. It doesn't have one of those wildly over the top storylines or villains. The fight scene is kind of iconic (and I don't mean the somewhat cringy part where Bond slaps Tanya). This movie was actually inspired by Alfred Hitchcock films. But if you're not into the more serious, realistic Bond films, there are plenty of the more lighthearted ones to come, starting with the next one.
