There is a fundamental difference in the main reasons why labels and artists are in the music business. Artists get into the industry to create art. Vast majority of successful artists never went into it to become famous (which explains why so many are struggling to handle fame). They just want to make music and have others enjoy it.

Record labels are in the music industry to make profit for the shareholders. This is their ONLY purpose. Not to launch, nurture and promote artists. Not to make great art available to the masses. Those things are simply means to an end, which is to make themselves rich(er). In order to do this, they must be ruthless in their interactions with their partners and adversaries. They generally don’t want, nor need to care for their artists’ well-being, until affects their ability to generate profits.
