From sterile stream to thriving river: Restoring the Allt Lorgy

Groundbreaking river restoration works on the Allt Lorgy on Kinveachy Estate have been awarded in the UK River Prize 2020.
This upland burn was previously engineered for agricultural purposes in the 1980s and has now been restored to kick start natural processes.
Now nature leads the way on this dynamic stretch of river to the benefit of the entire ecosystem.
"We definitely would like to see more of these types of projects happening. Having a hundred of these projects; then we'll really see a massive difference and a real delivery for climate change mitigation in the future". Sally MacKenzie, Conservation Officer, Cairngorms National Park Authority.

Really want to see more of this in Scotland. I can't look at the Scottish countryside anymore without seeing a land scarred by deforestation. Of course I still love this small country, but it can be better still. Great work.

What a lovely area! Beautiful little river! But what about some beavers?..? They will finish the fixing of this environment!...They are best water engineers on the planet! We, humans, do not even come close to them!

I have seen films from the US where beavers have been used as water engineers in places like Wyoming, Idaho and Utah. Given that this small river is very shallow, an artificial beaver lodge would need to be installed to allow any introduced animals to get a foothold. But its very encouraging to see waterways being allowed to meander naturally.

Just need a beaver family now (need to make an artificial dam first to create a small deep lake) and a few wolves to deal with the deer and paradise awaits (so they tell me).,

They have been living alongside rivers for thousands of years, many river species have adapted to living with beavers, they are a keystone species how do they not help rivers
