I shot this arial footage and the interview with the Coast Guard official when I worked for KBJR-6 in 1975. Reporter, Ray Niekamp, and I rented and airplane and flew out of Duluth to be over the wreck at dawn. We landed in Sault Ste. Marie and hung out at the Coast Guard station for a few hours. When we got back to the airport, we were informed the NBC's Rebecca Bell and crew were waiting for us in Duluth to use our footage as the day's lead story on the NBC Nightly News. It was a sad day for everyone, but especially the family and friends of the crew.

@@theneonlights1788 It is, of course, a great song, as evidenced by its enduring popularity. It isn't totally accurate, but that is poetic license. It serves to keep the memory of the lost loved ones alive--although I'm sure that's a two edged sword.

In 1988 I was living in Toronto, just recently separated. I met a woman who invited me to her family's big Christmas Dinner by Queenston Heights on the Niagara River. In conversation there I mentioned how I loved Gordon Lightfoot's song and had just recently watched a documentary on the tragic sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The room fell completely silent and I froze for a second not knowing why. The father spoke first quietly saying, "My brother went down on that ship". The conversation quickly changed and I felt awful but later the brothers told me about him and how the family felt that not only was the sinking the company's fault but afterwards they were treated disrespectfully and no one in the family had spoken that ships name since 1975.

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down of the big lake they called "Gitche Gumee" The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead when the skies of November turn gloomy With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty, that big ship and true was a bone to be chewed when the Gales of November came early The ship was the pride of the American side coming back from some mill in Wisconsin As the big freighters go, it was bigger than most with a crew and good captain well seasoned, concluding some terms with a couple of steel firms when they left fully loaded for Cleveland And later that night when the ship's bell rang, could it be the north wind they'd been feelin'? The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound and a wave broke over the railing And ev'ry man knew, as the captain did too 'twas the witch of November come stealin' The dawn came late and the breakfast had to wait when the Gales of November came slashin' When afternoon came it was freezin' rain in the face of a hurricane west wind When suppertime came the old cook came on deck sayin' "Fellas, it's too rough t'feed ya" At seven P.M. a main hatchway caved in; he said, "Fellas, it's bin good t'know ya!" The captain wired in he had water comin' in and the good ship and crew was in peril And later that night when 'is lights went outta sight came the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald Does any one know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours? The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay if they'd put fifteen more miles behind 'er They might have split up or they might have capsized; they may have broke deep and took water And all that remains is the faces and the names of the wives and the sons and the daughters Lake Huron rolls, Superior sings in the rooms of her ice-water mansion Old Michigan steams like a young man's dreams; the islands and bays are for sportsmen And farther below Lake Ontario takes in what Lake Erie can send her, And the iron boats go as the mariners all know with the Gales of November remembered In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed, in the Maritime Sailors' Cathedral The church bell chimed 'til it rang twenty-nine times for each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down of the big lake they call "Gitche Gumee" "Superior," they said, "never gives up her dead when the gales of November come early"

Wow, they were... so wrong. Early reporting not always the best reporting. No call from Fitzgerald was put out saying they'd lost two hatch covers. That would be cause for an immediate Mayday - but no distress call was ever made. They lost two *vent covers* sometime before 3:30 PM, and also reported a fence rail down. The last radio report was: "We are holding our own" ...

I went to school with a kid that's grandfather was the cook on that last voyage, he was actually retired filling in , to make some extra cash I'm sure, never knowing his fate, and the usual cook probably was amazed at his luck of calling off for that one trip, and yet survivors guilt probably crushed his soul, which is sad but understandable, but he wasn't responsible it's the way that life went at that time .

This was a mere 24 hours after the Fitzgerald sank, so yes, a lot of the information coming in turned out to be incorrect. And to be fair, it was thought for a long time afterwards that at least one of the hatches had blown. Hence Gordon Lightfoot penning the line "At 7PM a main hatchway caved in".

@@johnboehmer6683 : Well, I watched a long documentary and a few shorter clips, and "We've lost some fence [=railing] and some vents [2?]" was radioed by the captain to another captain [on tbe Anderson]. "Some hatch covers [too/also] was mentioned in another version. The US Coast Guard did some hi-pressure water tests on similar hatch covers and found that the gaskets were loose on several samples. When all is said and done, the actual sequence of events leading to taking on water, listing to starboard, and sinking fast with 26,000 tons of iron ore in her belly will remain a mystery. Evidently there are some more recent studies, which I will watch at another time.
@johnboehmer6683
@johnboehmer6683 3 жыл бұрын
@@jacksp1787 I've seen some stuff on it also, and what I saw was that the company that owned the Fitzgerald did their own initial investigation, and they were the ones who made the claim that the hatch covers were loose, thus why they got opened, and the water came in topside. In effect, they were blaming the crew for the whole thing to avoid the fact that that ship had no business going out that late with that storm forecast, and the ship in need of repair. But actual freighter crew men defended the crew, saying there is no way that this could have been the case. Those hatch covers were so heavy they would basically stay in place without even being clamped down at all, and the Fitzgerald crew had an impeccable reputation for following all protocol. In addition, another Captain said that the amount of water that could have entered even if they were loose would be so insignificant as to not possibly be the cause of the sinking. The Fitzgerald bottomed out on a shoal near Isle Royale. The captain of the Anderson gave the most acceptable theory (to me anyhow), saying they were taking on water from below because of this, in addition to the fact that the ship was not in good repair even as they set out. With all that extra weight, the ship just wasn't able to come up from the steep dive brought about by those massive sister waves that he said they just barely survived themselves, and they were headed right for the Fitzgerald. Almost certainly though, they did not lose the hatch covers BEFORE the wreck. You're right though, we'll never know for sure...

Guard your hearts and your thoughts, the devil is furious because he knows that his time is very very short. We are on the last days of the evil. Not everyone who says to me Lord, Lord, will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in Heaven. The Lord your God is the God of the living, not of the dead. Faith without deed is dead. Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death. And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. "Matthew 5-7 NIV Bible Gateway", we can use google search. These are the teachings, The Righteousness of our Lord Jesus Christ our God. REPENT, and start doing what is right. If you abide my teachings, you are really my disciples; then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. A time is coming and has now come, that the true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and Truth. God is Spirit, so his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and Truth; they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. In the New Heaven and New Earth, only Righteousness dwells. May the Spirit of our Lord Jesus Christ our God be with you all.
