@@typheran1 he was. The Venona papers vindicated McCarthy. There was tons of communist infiltration into the United States, confirmed by the CIA. The only reason McCarthy’s popularity fell was due to his attacks on the military, which in the aftermath of WW2 was still a revered institution.
