Salt Lake City International (SLC) is a large commercial airport located northwest of the city of Salt Lake City, Utah. While it consists mostly of air carrier traffic, there is a robust business and general aviation presence located on the east side of the airport.
0:48 - The runway configuration consists of a set of parallel runways, 16L and R and 34 L and R, primarily used for air carrier operations. East of these runways are two more runways, 14-32 and 17-35, more commonly used for the business and general aviation community. 17-35 is also regularly used by air carriers.
1:34 - Hot spot 1: while runways 14-32 and 17-35 do not intersect, the approach ends of runways 32 and 35 are in close proximity to one another. While this location is listed as a wrong runway departure risk, it also presents a hazard to approaching aircraft.
3:10 - Hot spot 2: The approach end of Runway 14 and taxiway Q. Pilots taxiing east on taxiway Q have mistakenly crossed the hold-short line for the runway.
3:38 - Use care when exiting runways 17-35 at taxiways K5 and K6. Both taxiways join the runway at a single, wide opening, and pilots have sometimes started to turn on the first taxiway they come to, before changing their mind, and turning back along the runway to the other taxiway. A similar situation exists on runway 16L-34R at taxiways H4, 5, and 6 and H7 and 8.
4:22 - When using runway 14-32 for landing or departure, Tower may instruct you to remain east of runway 16L-34R.
To address wrong surface events where an aircraft lines up to or lands on the incorrect runway, taxiway, or airport, the FAA released Arrival Alert Notices (AAN) at various airports with a history of misalignment risk. View the SLC Arrival Alert Notice here: www.faa.gov/airports/runway_s...
The FAA's From the Flight Deck video series uses aircraft-mounted cameras to capture runway and taxiway footage and combines them with diagrams and visual graphics to clearly identify hot spots and other safety-sensitive items. Learn more at www.faa.gov/FromTheFlightDeck

Hot spots are a real issue, at many airports not just SLC. I am glad to see the FAA trying to bring awareness and end to hot spots and runway incursions.

I fly out of KSLC. I appreciate the FAA putting out this video to help airmen unfamiliar with the terminal area to navigate into and around the SLC environment. Thanks

I don't understand why the airport/FAA doesn't paint the numbers repeatedly, as a lead, on hotspot intersections. Four or five repeats of the runway number painted on the ground would, I think, eliminate a lot of this. Price of paint.

Parallel runways should be color coded. With North as a reference use the colors of navigation. This would at least lessen the ambiguity.

Good overview video. Much more complex layout than necessary. Good example of poor long term airport planning.

I agree, this airport is a mess. This video is extremely helpful though. The issues are a lot more clear when you see it as opposed to just looking at a chart.

Salt Lake is complex. another airport in my area that has this problem is Joslin Field itself Kilo Tango Whiskey Foxtrot The Twin Falls City Airport. Hotspot 1 for this airport is the junctions of Taxiway Alpha 2, Taxiway Delta, Taxiway Bravo, and Taxiway Alpha and Charlie in between these is a runway junction next to the Skywest ramp and the Reeder Jet Center fuel box. Runway 30 runs right through this junction and 30's blastpad is in the middle of Runway 8. If you move at Joslin Field you must contact Salt Lake Center or Twin Falls Tower before you land or taxi on the airport. If you are parked at Skywest Stand 4 or the fuel box Do Not Taxi Onto Runway 30 When You Do Your Pushback! this will trigger a runway incursion and you can hit a crop duster on final at Runway 12. Taxiway Alpha has holdshort lines located at either end do not enter this area or you will trigger a runway incursion. Hotspot 2 is in the middle of Runway 8 Do Not Taxi into this area you are next to 30"s blastpad if you are on 26 or 8 exit at Alpha 1 and Alpha 3 do not exit at Alpha 2 or you will trigger a runway incursion on 30. Also make sure your heading is correct or you will land on Taxiway Alpha by mistake don't do that.

I used to fly GA aircraft quite a bit in and out of Kslc. Another fun bit this video didn't cover is to make sure you don't taxi onto the national gaurd ramp on the north east/general aviation side 😅.

This whole problem should have been avoided when design of the airport was initiated. When in effect the FAA and Airport realized this, it should have been relooked at. It's easier getting into JFK or ORD and even as busy as they are I have never had a problem getting to a ramp or gate, Should a pilot here be confused even after watching this the repercussions could be tremendous, Good video though.

This is the most confusing airport I have ever seen. I agree with Ed H below. It should have never been approved in its configuration.

I believe those first two runways (the far east and the diagonal one) are the original runways from the 40s. Everything else was added onto after for more traffic so it's probably a result of not having time/money or finding the traffic disruption is not worth it. Those far east runways aren't used as often as the main 2 parallel runways anyways.

4:16 such a stupid design to try to be efficient. More taxiways = more confusion
